This song makes me think about life, death of loved ones and all around I feel sad listening to it because it is so beautiful, yet, in the end I'm happy. No other song does that.

This is a fan made video, he wanted to make a video story about life. Obviously he feels the same or similar when he listens to this song.

Yea I knew about that and I'm not going to try and defend it. There's no doubt that Zeppelin borrowed a lot of material from early blues and folks musicians, but so did every other British blues band of that time. I think this song was the most blatant case, but I like to think that LZ's strength was in the way they arranged songs, taking bits of previous songs that influenced them, and making it their own (reworking it if you will). Apparently when Holmes heard their take on "Dazed and Confused" his reaction was basically "What the hell. Let them have it." I never got the impression that they flat out stole an entire song, usually it was a line or part of a riff or a technique or something. And after listening to some of the material that influenced them, I can never enjoy them as much because there are so many other things that Zeppelin added themselves to make it their own song.

As for giving proper credits, there's not much you can say about that. I think a lot of that happened because of their douchebag manager, though.

Anyways, I'm probably not the best person to be defending them since I've only recently started to get into rock music. But, out of every band I've listened to, I immediately felt a connection with their music (something I couldn't feel with the songs they "ripped off") and their style. Everything just seems to work so well together with them and they're by far my favourite band.

I'm not dissing the music, but it was just dull to me. You've posted some stuff by them before that wasn't bad, but...ehh...wasn't feeling this one, honestly.

I really respect Van Halen's talent, but I've always thought he was a horrible song writer. So many people love the guy, but I just don't get it.

I actually loved the video M Two One posted. It had so much more emotion in it. It's not always about playing the most complex riffs, and I think that the group M posted, Sigur Ros (don't have the time to look up how to do the ~, lol), embodies that minimalistic approach to music more than most groups. They're work is just beautifully dark. I loved the string at the end in that song as well (not sure if they were violas or violins, I have no ear for classical instruments).

Man, you know I love those lyrics, especially now. Brilliant song from a brilliant man, although I'm saddened by the commercialization of his name and the brand it's become. Oh, and I didn't give a full A+ because the guy didn't allow message board embedding, so I had to go to YouTube to watch it. That's just lame.

Don't really listen to Frusciante, but I can see why you guys enjoy his music so much. That was a nice mellow song that felt real nice to listen to in the morning. Not a complex melody, but he made it louder at the right times and it was all about conveying his emotion.

Are you going through the complete discography right now and landing on Revolver? If so, man, you'll love Abbey Road. That's my favorite album of all-time, in terms of being an album. By that, I mean all the tracks flow seemlessly like one giant song and not like 15 individual tacks. If you get it or download it, make sure you play it all together, with no pauses between songs, because it flows so well together.

As for "I'm Only Sleeping", this is a song that Frusciante (speak of the devil) was heavily inspired by. I think they call the effect "playback" or something, but whatever it is, the effect where Harrison's solo is played backwards is really cool and inspired him.

I don't think that the song Mamba recommended from Frusciante is one of his better songs, so that's where I'll head with my recommendation -

You're right, that song blows the previous one away (not to say that one was bad). Did he use the same technique as George Harrison from "I'm Only Sleeping"? Because it sounded really cool in the beginning and it just lifted me through the rest of the song. Enjoyed it a lot.

As for going through the Beatles discography, I'm halfway through the White Album right now. I think Abbey Road is coming up after that and I've heard nothing but good things about it, so I'm looking forward to it.

What a cool Dylan song. My only complaint is his voice. He's got probably the worst voice in classic rock. My friend actually does a great impression of it when he sings "Subterranean Homesick Blues." But with that aside, he's as close to a genius songwriter as you'll ever see outside of John Lennon. Best Dylan song ever written - "All Along the Watchtower," best when covered by Hendrix.

That effect on the Frusciante intro actually wasn't what I was talking about. That was a synth solo, because on that album Frusciante was getting really into synths. Here's an example of him using the effect: link. It's just a one minute clip, so I don't want to use it as my recommendation, don't feel obliged to watch it. I'm just throwing it out there.

I've never heard of this group, but its exactly the type of 60's/70's blues rock that I've been been falling in love with lately. The lyrics were deep and the I loved how the lead guitar was just doing his thing while the others provided the rhythm in the background. Very beautiful and I can't find anything wrong with that song. Gonna check them out for sure.

And thanks for the Frusciante clip. It sounded real nice.

I haven't heard this song in forever, thanks for posting it.

The greatest thing about it are the lyrics.

...that's exactly how marijuana hits you. You usually try it first when you're young, and it opens your mind to outside-of-the-box thinking, drugs, and the drug culture. At the moment, you don't think, "I'll be smoking a lot of this over the next few years," but you always wind up down that road.

They put you down and shut you out
You gave to me a new belief
And soon the world will love you sweet leaf

...that's so true. If you haven't smoked it, you really have no reference point to talk about it. Before I started smoking weed, I had bought into the government propaganda as well, but then I tried it a few times (because usually you don't inhale right at first), and my perspective took a complete 180 degree turn. It's the ultimate anti-anxiety, anti-stress, anti-depression drug.

Random facts about this song:

- They actually got the name off of a pack of cigarrettes claiming to use the "sweet leaf."
- The cough in the song is actually Tony Iommi coughing after taking a hit off a bong.
- RHCP ends their hit, "Give It Away," by quoting the famous riff from this song.

I'm in the mood for this sort of coffee shop/college rock at the moment, but the guy's voice was just a little too high for me to really like this song. Like I said earlier, I'm sort of picky when it comes to this kind of rock and like a deeper, more unique voice like Jack Johnson. It was soothing to hear after a long night of partying though none the less.

(I don't know if any of that made sense. I'm sorry if it didn't. I'm still in the 'state of mind' if you know what I mean. I'm getting better at posting while I am though. Practice makes perfect.)

Now that's what I'm talkin about! The ukelele is the most mellow instrument on the planet, and I love when Jack Johnson incorporates it in his music. The chorus melody was a little unoriginal though. I could have sworn I've heard it somewhere before.

I love this song, but the thing that kills it for me is the shifting in tempo from verse to chorus. I can get into it, but in general, if there's no progression to it, they shouldn't shift the tempo so often and suddenly. The chorus is amazing though. This was probably the first Chilis song I heard where I thought, "maybe the band would be better off with John as the lead singer."

The video sucked. The intro was too long, and the footage of Morrison made him look too stagnant and pasty. The karaoke lyrics were annoying too.

With that said, the song's still an amazing song. It's catchy, and the lyrics are some of Morrison's best. I think it gets overplayed a shitload though, and that's why I gave it an A- and not an A+.

Great song. I love the video as well, even though I don't know what to make of most of the visuals, I respect them and love Adam Jones work on the video. I especially like the third eye visuals toward the end of the video. And like many of Tool's songs it was longer than the usual radio-format (3-6 min) but it never feels like it because there is never a boring point. I really like these lyrics by the way:

They're message is often hard to discern lyrically. They're extremely anarchistic, but it's almost like they're just anti-government and not against any specific cause, with songs like this at least. The video was cool though, especially the ending where the dude comes on and says they're pro-terrorist.

Marnie Stern - Every Single Line Means Something

This is easily the album of the year for me. This chick has such an amazing voice that resonates beyond comprehension. Not to mention, Zach Hill (the drummer) absolutely tears it up across the whole album and in this particular song as he does on everything he's ever done. The album came out in January, and I just found out about it today. I don't know how I missed it back then.

Man, I've never heard of her either, but I really liked it. Her voice doesn't go with her look, but when I closed my eyes, it sounded amazing. I really, really have to check these guys out. I haven't come across a legit band with a chick singer since Sonic Youth.
