That trip, how did the refs miss that yet call a late hit on something so minor?

Definitely a foul, but clearly incidental after the defender's own trip, which made it hard for the refs to see, I think. The refs have generally let the little things go both ways. But you should appreciate this gift from the refs - defender made initial contact, OPI is lame.
