Exclusive |Swept| So it begins - 2017 offseason

Welcome to our community

I've been thinking a lot about the offseason, and my semi-realistic scenario is this;

Trade Meyers+Aminu to Phoenix for Chandler and Barbosa. Why? Veteran leadership, two champions, and both would improve our bench.

(Looking at draft express mock to see talent around our picks)

Trade Harkless+15 to Sacramento (at 10, I think it's fair value... if we had to add 26, so be it.) and take Zach Collins.

Trade 20+Davis to Indiana for CJ Miles+47

At 26 take Anzejs Pasecniks, and at 47 take Alpha Kaba (likely stashing both but hoping Anzejs is ready to come over).

Go into 2017/18 looking like...

Dame /Barbosa
CJ / Crabbe
Turner / Miles
Vonleh / Collins
Nurk / Chandler / Anzejs

With Pat, Layman, Q-Man, and Bazz riding pine.

Completely incorrect. If the Blazers were only at the salary cap right now--or even below--CJ's extension would push them well over, and they'd also have the full 8.4M MLE available.

If, for example, the Blazers had not signed Turner and had not matched Crabbe, the Blazers' active contracts going into next season would be around the $102M cap, but the first round picks and the MLE would put the "budget" close to the luxury tax line without already being in tax hell.

$142.4M - $19.3M - $17.1M = $106M

$4M over the cap. We'd have the flexibility to cut Ezeli's $7.7M and get to ~$98M, allowing a ~$4M player to be signed with cap space.

I have mentioned several times that if below or at the cap, the only way to get over is by using exceptions, and I specifically mentioned room and MLE.

The cost would have been two players who played 60 minutes per game for us and to maintain your cap situation, no players could be signed to replace them OR you'd have to sign guys to 1 year type (or with team option year 2) contracts. We'd have been playing Jake Layman and his 4.9 PER heavy minutes.

The argument would still follow that there's no point in paying up to the LT next season either.

Again, you're also neglecting the salary value of the first round picks, as well as the ability to take back more in trade than sending out (in addition to the MLE), so the claim (I disputed) of "the budget being $102M" is patently false.

I am not neglecting the salary value of the first round picks.

I conceded we could get to close to the LT by using MLE and Room, and that we could sign a $4M player if we cut Ezeli, too.

Your argument for paying up to the LT still goes for this past season as well. You should pay up to the LT, regardless.

You're not comprehending my argument. I'm not saying that a team should do anything. I'm disputing your logic as to why you claim the team should pay up to the LT (that the next year's budget is limited by the prior year's spend) by pointing out that (and showing how) the team can spend well over the cap--and even up to the tax--without spending up to the tax the year prior.

For the second time, I'm conceding we could get to LT by using Room and MLE.

Do you want me to concede this a third time?

I have written an article reflecting on this season and looking at the off-season. Gonna post it on Blazersland.com later this afternoon. Will post a link to it here on the forum.

Hey @HAAK72 the Blazersland site seems to be having issues. What's up?

Thaddeus Young and Gorgui Deing are probably the most gettable semi-difference makers at the frontcourt positions. Kyle O'Quinn is a curious case. Stats look great, but has never played a lot of minutes and has shaky on/off splits.

Both have and nice on/off splits the last couple years and fit Dame and CJ's timeline better than their current team's (if George is traded).

I would love to have Deing or O'Quinn. Young has always disappointed when handed starters minutes though.

I wanted Olshey to trade for Dieng before the trade deadline. He'd be a sweet addition to our frontcourt.

Yeah I've liked Deing since he was at Louisville. He's not a great defensive compliment to Nurkic, but he's another passer and has some touch offensively. I think you can play with him with both Nurkic and Vonleh too.

And he has some versatility as he's capable of playing the 4/5 spots.

Yup. I think that versatility is what Neil is going to look for in an offseason big addition judging from his exit interview comments.

Both Young and and Deing would actually be pretty nice. Just not sure we have the assets to get it done.

Deing/Young/Vonleh
Nurk/Deing/Vonleh

What do you think it would take to get them?

I'd be shocked if the Wolves have any interest in dealing Dieng.

It's hard to predict how other team's value their players but Harkless+Ed+#20 for Young+#18, Crabbe + #15 for Deing seem like reasonable starting points.

Crabbe is obviously a tough contract to move, but Minny's need for shooting plus the uncertainty of Zach Lavine's knee might be enough. And even if Zach comes back, I think you could argue that AC's lower usage, better shooting skillset fits better with Towns and Wiggins.

I agree. He's definitely the harder one to attain.

But maybe they draft Isaac and want to hand him the keys to the PF postion and look to move on for Deing. It wouldn't be Thibodeau's MO to make a move like that, but it's probably the only reasonable scenario.

Even if they did draft a PFOTF, they'd be better off keeping him as the 28 mpg 3rd big off the bench than dealing him for anything we'd offer.

...just a caching issue, cleared now! https://www.blazersland.com/

...nice! You da man -- it's THAT time of year again :devilwink:

Hey, I edited a word and it messed up the formatting. Not sure how to fix it.

The hope for a Meyers dumping: Miles Plumlee was traded by Milwaukee to Charlotte for Spencer Hawes and Roy Hibbert (two essentially expiring contracts). Plumlee had just signed a 4 yr, 50 mil deal this past summer. This is a dude that regularly gets DNP CDs

Meyers is a better player when he has his head on straight and is owed $8 mil less over the next three years of his contract. I don't think there's any need to attach picks to dump him.

When the Bulls finish blowing this 2-0 lead they had and get sent out of the playoffs in the first round then I expect they look to rebuild. Not saying we are getting Butler necessarily but I believe he will be available to the highest bidder. Obviously you go at it hard to see if you can get him.

Would you trade CJ for him?
