They rewrote the history books when Lee Tung Huei became president...he was the first Taiwanese president without being a mainlander from China....Chiang Kai Shek was a brutal dictator...that's no longer true there...they've always fought in parliament...

Yes, this was obvious to me on day 1 of Russias invasion of Ukraine. I think after month 1 of the invasion though the likelihood of China attacking Taiwan within the next few years has decreased substantially though. The poor performance of Russias military has proven that even big military budgets, and expensive hardware aren’t the only thing that matters in warfare.

Any reasonable observer should be making that same observation, China hasn’t had a war to test its military performance in decades. So any invasion could become a huge embarrassment if it does not go well, so I would think Xi Jin Ping would be wise enough to wait quite a while longer until he were to pull the trigger on that.
 
China can't take Taiwan. They'll have to obliterate it. Taiwan has had a nuclear program since the 70s and will have a nuke ready to launch before China can mount an invasion.

Just getting across the moat to Taiwan would cost China over 1 million soldiers... And they don't have enough vessels to do that.

Taiwan is a far more prepared force than Ukraine and for more easily defended.
 
I've said this before, but it's ridiculous how long people hold onto territorial grudges. It was 73 years ago that the then-Chinese government fled to Taiwan. Anyone who was a part of that is past 90 years old now. But somehow they've convinced their kids and grandkids to continue to be angry about it.

Actually Taiwan is the largest investor in the Chinese manufacturing sector....Taiwan always said it will win the war with China with economics, not weapons. As it is the best thing the world could do is to vote Taiwan back into the United Nations and reinstall their embassies there...I'm disappointed they are pampering China over Taiwan's status

Agreed. There is nothing at all that China could do besides start WW3. Or just completely level Taiwan... Which would be even dumber than Russia leveling Ukraine.

If the world sanctioned China the way we've sanctioned Russia there would be half as many Chinese in a year.
 
Since the Ukranian invasion the Pacific Rim allies are circling the wagons around China Russia and North Korea as well as Iran......the last administration opened the floodgates for those 4 countries to become aggressive military threats in the region....now between Australia, US, India, Phillipines, Japan and South Korea...there is a buffer allliance that will make China hesitant to worldwide sanctions such as Russia has been faced with. Taiwan should be a part of the Pacific Alliance but until they are recognized....they sit in cold war limbo politically ...Invaders have to play offense and defense but defenders can put all their military concentration on defense.....that's what Ukraine did and it worked. I'm glad Joe said we'd fight for Taiwan if they invaded. it's not just the island...it's the Pacific Rim that needs to assure that China and Russia don't expand there

This should be translated as the GNP and all our investors do not want to lose a billion Chinese customers and workers...Taiwan only has 23 million so ......that's the population of Canada or Australia......not major movers and shakers in the international trade game! The whole world needs to collectiviely call China's bluff on Taiwan and vote them into the UN...fuck China
 
Fuck Xi Jinping.....he knows what would happen all across the Pacific if he does this..it'd start WWIII. Taiwan is holding anti aircraft drills today as are other countries in the region ..China might be stubborn but I don't think they want to be surrounded by enemies and have their supply lines cut off. Their two friends Russia and N Korea are both broke and struggling to feed themselves as it is.
 
I just have never understood our obsession with Taiwan. It's a tiny country that is not in our sphere of influence, it IS in China's, and not a strategic asset in any way.

Not worth going to war with China over, that's for damn sure.

We wouldn't need WWIII. If we sanction China the way we are sanctioning Russia you'd have about the 500 million dead Chinese in a year.

We've been allies since WWII....there are about a million foreign companies with factories and deep roots there...it's strategically located and our military was there, Okinawa and in S. Korea and the Phillipines and Guam to protect our allies in the Pacific from another Japan like aggression ...we protect New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Malaysia, all sorts of allies in the region. I have family there and my wife is Taiwanese....there are people from all over the world living and working there...it's a free democracy and one of our best trading partners for computer displays and chips..we've had a thriving international trade relation with Taiwan..it's absolutely in our sphere of influence....China and Hong Kong were both once our allies as well. China knows this. I don't think they'll invade. Taiwan represents democracy in asia..successful democracy. Taiwan has the same population as Australia and Canada.

Those are all great reasons. Legit. My only caveat is that Taiwan is historically part of China. Guam is not, Japan is not, etc.

And I also get its a western country, but to me it is more akin to Hong Kong than Okinawa. Our obsession is a remnant of the red scare of the 50s.

Taiwan has been historically part of Portugal, Holland, China, Japan and the 18 original tribes there who are the ancestors to the Maoris in New Zealand...their natives are polynesians....they are now mixed with Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese blood. The Japanese controlled the island for 75 years...they were given to Japan by Pu Yi ..the last emperor of China...they have been occupied many times in their history but are a Pacific Island..the Taiwanese who've been there about 500 years are the same people as the Okinawans..fishermen...Hong Kong is nothing like Taiwan..it's Cantonese....The Taiwanese language is not written....Mandarin was brought to the island with Chiang Kai Shek..they have two conflicting political parties...the KMT who are mainland Chinese and the party of the Chinese...and the DPP the independence party of people who are originally Taiwanese and demand independance from Chinese claims. We aren't fueling a "red scare"...we have a Pacific Rim alliance to keep any country from invading another in the region. Pearl Harbor put this in our backyard...we didn't go looking for it. we also packed up our military bases in Taiwan, the Phillipines and Okinawa....when times were peaceful...we left...still in Korea because it's never been a time of peace there. I was in the Navy when we had bases in those 3 countries and again after we left....the old Navy Com station in Taiwan is now the US Trade Center there which acts as our unofficial embassy.We should absolutely vote Taiwan back into the United Nations again...fuck China
