And see, if he was fired 2 years ago would we have gotten to the WCF?
1. I'd reread what Bones is saying. He's not doing what you're saying. KJ is fine too. They are just talking.

2. People bring up the ousting of Mark Jackson and subsequent hiring of Steve Kerr as an example of sometimes something that is working can work better if you take that chance, or that calculated risk. I don't know how far we can go with or without Stotts. The theoretical is not my favorite realm. But I do know that I'm tired of what the Blazers do on offense and on defense. I'm tired of isolation. I'm tired of the lineups. I'm tired of the poor rotations. And on and on and on and on.

Give me the say and I think it's time to move on from Stotts, and Olshey for that matter.

I think that every GM and coach has a shelf life and there's little doubt that Terry and Neil are getting towards their pull dates. My issue is not with changing coach and GM, it's the discussion mid-season about dumping these guys. Personally, I'm in favor of letting Olshey have one more season to show if the roster that he says can contend when healthy actually can do that. I'd also let Terry have one more run just because his players are comfortable with him and know his system. The following summer would be truth or consequences time. If the team is set for a run as a contender, great. Otherwise, I'd ax both of them. I'd probably trade Dame and CJ at that point for as many picks and good players as possible and look for a total rebuild. OTOH, there's always the possibility of a change of ownership and everything being set in motion earlier.

Look at all this family argument. Kick Stotts out of this turkey dinner and have some peace.

He doesnt want to understand whats happening here, he wants to bash me and try to make me look bad. He has a vendetta against me and gets really into it.

What was the last coach Portland had this board wasn't complaining about? :protestthem:

This isn't a lifetime job. After the first 2-3 years, it should be up or out.

(In the military, they transfer you every 2 years or so. If you don't get promoted within a certain number of years, they retire you. The policy is called "up or out.")

Think of it as a temporary military assignment, not a lifetime Supreme Court award for genius.

I wonder what would've happened if the Blazers hired Brad Stevens instead of Stotts. He was hired in 2013 by Boston, a year after Terry.

Shoot - I wonder what would have happened if they had kept the competent Dunleavy for a few more years instead of jumping into the Cheeks' dumpster fire! If the team doesn't bottom out and reloads rather than a complete rebuild.....

I wonder what would have happened if they'd kept Rolland Todd as coach.

(Discovery: 53 days from now is the 50th anniversary of our hiring a coach. There should be a thread to celebrate each 50th anniversary of team formation during these months.)

Seriously. That was like a shock to the system that lasted a long freaking time.

Ok, we're on the same page then. Let's take a coach that I highly respect in Rick Carlisle ( I was really hoping we would hire Carlisle when he was let go from Detroit). Let's compare their coaching records at thier current respective team.

Stotts 7 season at Portland
Coaching record 351-283 (.554)
Playoffs 6 of 7 (84%)
3 of 6 made it past the first round (50%)
1 out of 6 made it to the WCF ( 17%)
Won division 2 out of 7 years (29%)

Carlisle 11 seasons at Dallas
Coaching record 506-439 (.535)
Playoffs 7 of 11 (64%)
2 of 11 made it past the first round ( 18%)
1 out of 11 made it to the WCF ( 9%)
Won an NBA championship
Won division 1 out of 11 ( 9%)

Comparing the 2, which one appears more successful over all at their respective teams? I would say Stotts. Carlisle has been up and down in his tenure at Dallas while Stotts has been more steady and reliable and both have been giving a longer tenure in their position than average. Now I have always had the philosophy that coaches are hired to be fired but giving the 2 comparisons I can see why a team would want to retain Stotts for the time being just like Carlisle has been given at Dallas and with all the injuries this year it seems reasonable that Stotts will be given the opportunity to see what he can do next year with a healthy team. After that, he may be let go and a new direction in coaching could begin. Making a change isn't always the best thing as I have seen teams in many sports change coaches constantly and never forming any identity or consistency.
For fuck’s sake watch the two in head to head matchups and you tell me who the better coach is. I guarantee 100 out of 100 experts would pick Carlisle and it’s not even close. The man coaches circles around Stotts every time the two teams play. I’m not saying his team wins every time but in terms of pure coaching, Carlisle is in a different league. Even a very average coach like Alvin Gentry makes Stotts look incompetent. I mean when a coach can run the same defensive strategy for three consecutive seasons (trap and double team Dame) and the opposing coach cannot come up with an adjustment, I’d say you’re a bad coach. Not just bad, but BAD.

I love posts like this. You are in a forum. Did you think people were going to literally talk about rainbows and unicorns? :biglaugh:

Let's just starting complaining about the next coach if that's what this forum is about.

That's an interesting theory:

If your theory were a reality, we could have Brad Stevens or Steve Kerr because those teams would need to fire them as well. I could get down with this!

Not sure i get all the love for Brad Stevens or Steve Kerr for that matter. We all know what Kerr has had for a roster and that conversation has happened plenty.
I'm Sure Brad Stevens is very capable and i do like what he brings. Seems to really get good things out of his team with the "Team Unity and Commitment" principals. He has a different approach on a bunch of things. Very calm would be a good thing but not sure it would work unless you are the coach of the Celtics in the Eastern Conference? Would he be crucified for never drawing a Tech if he was playing in the West? Even more so if he was the coach of a team that might not get the same type of television ratings? Stevens is very ridged in his ways. Probably stems from being an economics major and a college coach. He coaches from a flash card that he keeps in his pocket which might not be a good look but it seems to work for him.
Stevens uses probably the most basic offense out there in the "Spread". Screens to Mismatches and Iso's, He uses hand offs and some horn options with some cool secondary staggering moves that get guys good looks at the basket. Again his overall offensive style is to keep it simple and look for the extra pass.
Stevens also uses the PnR out at the top of the key quite a bit but the wrinkle he uses is bringing the corner three shooter out of the corner at times to get that second screen or option to pass. Rick Carlisle does this as well as Stotts and Spo.
One thing that he has is a great overall group with a deep team that has some good ball handlers/shooters. You have to admit the Celtics are a very good team. Some of this has to do with Danny Ainge getting him some pretty decent players.
The overall sentiment is that he is a coaching "genius". If he continues what he is doing he will win multiple rings. From the looks of things he might be stuck trying to always beat one of the most dynamic players in the league. First it was LeBron and now it's Giannis.

I liked Adelman and I actually liked Dunleavy too. It seemed to me that he made Rasheed post up a lot (where he was very effective). Dunleavy had a .642 regular season record but fired after only 4 years. His playoff record only .500. Adelman allowed to coach only 6 years with a .654 regular season record and .522 playoff record.
If you win a championship, you get a lot more leeway. Ramsey only .552 regular season and .492 playoffs, got to coach 10 years.

I'd add badly fitting talent--CJ should've been traded years ago for a player who actually complemented our star player more. It's amazing to me that this bad fit has gone 7 years (so far). Anyone who wonders what life would've been like if Golden State never traded Monte Ellis can just re-watch the wasted years of Dame's prime. If you have Steph Curry, don't put a worse version of Steph Curry next to him. How Olshey has somehow not managed to notice the lesson of the most dominant back court of the 2010's is beyond me.

The funniest part is that some of us have been posting that exact same thing on here for years.

How is it possible that WE can figure that out but he can't?

Big deal. What we want to know is when’s the 50th anniversary of the first firing of a head coach?

Here’s a question: Has Olshey already found that better fit guy in Trent without having to trade CJ? With the defense he’s been showing lately, really solid 3 point shooting, and better size, I could see him as a starter at SG. He’s got a ways to go, of course, but he offers a lot of the same things that Klay Thompson does. If so, then CJ becomes a resource that can be used on an upgrade at SF or PF.

lmfao! Kid, you matter absolutely nothing to me so get over your paranoia. I always get a lick out of your always the victim never the instigator routine. HCP and myself are also enjoying all this free rent in your head.

Except the numbers don't back your opinion. Even during the matchups with the Mavericks Stotts is 12-15. Not really much of a difference to come to the conclusion that Carlisle "owns" Stotts, especially when you factor in the numbers I provided on their over all records with their respective teams. Enjoy your day.

I don't think he's trading CJ. He's completely married to this backcourt and I just don't get it.....

I mean, I do get it..... CJ and Dame are like family. I think that's the main reason why he hasn't been traded.

CJ and Dame are both really good, want to be here, and have no concerns about who gets most of the shots or glory. Let’s not pretend that is a usual occurrence in the NBA, especially in a small market like Portland. You only break that up for a home run move. CJ’s play absent Dane may up his value around the league to where something like that is possible.
