That Portland can match an offer that Minnesota makes.
Minnesota is in negotiations to trade Ridnour for a non-guaranteed contract to clear space to make the offer sheet.
Please explain what cards Portland has?
All they can do is overpay Batum, then the Wolves go on their way and get a different player.
Hawkey seems a tad slow.
I'll help you out, Chris.
Owner Paul Allen and Neil Olshey have stated more than once that they WILL exercise their right to match any offer sheet.
Nic and his agent can cry all they want. He can be the saddest $48m player if he wants. *busts out little violin*
Ok, then you're paying Batum $12 mil while you're trying to rebuild the team. You aren't a big winner in this situation.
You really think an extra $2M or so per year to Batum makes a difference to Paul Allen?
If Minnesota makes the player dump to have the space to make an offer on Batum, those assets are gone and can't be used in any trade scenarios. All you have left is cap space and everybody seems to have cap space this year when there aren't many good FA's. If Kahn whiffs on this deal, he'll regret having used all of his trade assets up in a futile attempt to grab Batum.

But in the process we save Batum from frostbite and mosquito bites. It's the humanitarian thing to do.Ok, then you're paying Batum $12 mil while you're trying to rebuild the team. You aren't a big winner in this situation.
Nope. I think it makes a difference in the salary cap.
Moot point.
They have to pay people more to come to Minnesota. So why aren't you worrying about the T'Wolves cap space if you don't think Batum is worth the money?
I would be very happy with that even without picks, but what does Chicago need to make that happen?Hey, if Kahn can get us Deng in the S&T then I'm on board. Did you know he's just a month older than Aldridge? And his game might not be as flashy as Batum's but he's a hell of a lot more consistent.
He talks about us signing Batum for $12 mil while we rebuild? Uh, but you want him on your team, and want to pa him, and uh... Not sure if you saw the standings, but we finished ahead of you.
We were on a playoff spot all year. Then Ricky, Love, Pek, and Ridnour got hurt. You should have paid closer attention last year, the Wolves were fun to watch with everyone healthy. You really think you would have had a better record than us if all our best players didn't get hurt? Playing without the two players your entire team is based around is tough. You finished 2 games ahead of us.

Yeah, we understand we're overpaying but that's a risk we're willing to take. We think he'd fit in really well with our team, he could make us much better, and he wants to be here. We're improving. You're just paying more for the same team. Not sure how that's leverage. You can pay him that much if you want, but I don't think you want to.
And for the questions about how the Wolves could waive players- it's really not difficult
Darko- Amnesty clause
Martell Webster- non-guanteed contract (>$1mil buyout)
Brad Miller- announced retirement

Just trying to interject a little sanity into this dream world where you think teams are going to hand over their whole to team to pay a contract you don't really want anyway.
You guys and Olshey are going to figure out how it works on NBA2k12 and how it works in real life are very different. Teams aren't going to give you all their assets for nothing, and Batum isn't going to sign some crap $6 million dollar deal like you offered him before.
If you get Batum for $12 mil, congratulations. You won. Throw a big party.
