The December 15th Brook Lopez Trade

I'm curious--would you be more willing to move CJ or Crabbe in a Young/Brolo deal?

I wouldn't include CJ in a Young/Brolo deal because I think CJ could be used to acquire a star-caliber player. Maybe not 1 for 1, but he could be the centerpiece of the deal.

There's a reason why Brolo is supposedly on the block. He's injury prone. He has a big contract, and the league is shifting towards smaller, faster lineups. Honestly, I'm not thrilled with Young/Brolo but if we could acquire them on the cheap, I would do it. Giving up Crabbe wouldn't be "on the cheap."

I see where you're coming from. I don't necessarily agree with your position, but I understand it.

So, not to go all BGD on you, but are you calling Crabbe untouchable?
I think he's #3 on the untouchable depth chart:
#1 - Dame
#2 - CJ
#3 - Crabbe

If any of those guys are traded we HAVE to be the undeniable winner in the trade. Earlier I compared Crabbe to an intelligent version of Outlaw. And while I think that's still a fairly apt description of his current game, I'm also getting shades of Rip Hamilton. I think that's Crabbe's ceiling. I don't know if he'll get there, but at this point if I'm selling him it's at Rip Hamilton value.

I personally feel like Crabbe is a better fit long term as our shooting guard. I like CJ a lot, but I'm on the "trade CJ" train. I'm only in favor of trading him for a legitimate star caliber player, so I'm not in a rush, but I don't want to give up Crabbe because I really think he could be an Allan Houston type player. He played in Detroit for three years and then New York reaped all the benefits.

Oh, I agree with you on all that--it's your position on the prospective Young/Brolo deal with which I disagree. I think it would be a massive upgrade for our team, and well worth a deal that included Crabbe (or even CJ, if we also got a pick from a third team).

I guess I'm not sold on Thad, and Brolo is a pretty significant injury risk. So on paper it might be a massive upgrade, but there's definitely a very real possibility that it could bite us in the ass.

I like Crabbe and Noah a lot as well. However, both Thad and Brook are proven commodities who would (IMO) immediately make us a dangerous playoff team. The offensive versatility of a Dame/CJ/Aminu/Young/Lopez lineup would be tough for any team to match up with: two explosive perimeter threats, two talented athletic slashers who can both shoot outside and finish strong, and a premier post player. Plus, Lopez is a far superior interior defender to Plumlee, as Plumlee is a superior overall backup center to Meyers. Our bench after this deal would be Henderson/Harkless/Davis/Plumlee, as reliable a corps as there is.

You have to give to get, and I think a Crabbe/Vonleh/Meyers package is the kind of group of youngsters that it would require to entice a terrible team like Brooklyn with no draft picks to give up two high performing 27 year olds that are locked into long-term deals--exactly the kind of deal we need to make to accelerate this rebuild, and give Dame the kind of supporting cast he deserves. If we could do it without giving up Crabbe, great, but I don't know if Brooklyn is necessarily as willing to deal those guys as we might hope.
Honestly, you have completely sold me open the concept with that speel. Very very well put. Easily the best trade I have seen on this forum

Hmmm. Well no I suppose, but I think he should be last on the pecking order of who to get rid of. Id offer Frazier/Hedno/Leonard/Kaman.

Only adding Frazier as a garnish. Not an impact to the trade, not icing on the cake. More like the little flowery designs ON the icing. ;)

Just saying Id offer both Hendo and Frazier, before just offering Crabbe.
Frazier is alfalfa/sprouts on a chocolate cake. Sure it's garnish but it still doesnt fit.

Here is my concern about Lopez:

His first three years in the league he was a rock.

82 games
82 games
82 games

After that it started to go downhill.

5 games
74 games
17 games
72 games (started 44)

Are we getting the first three years or the next four years? Foot injuries on big men terrify me.

Guys like Crabbe are becoming extremely sought after. Case in point: Danny Green. Crabbe is actually outplaying Green, and the Spurs re-signed him last summer to a 4 year, $45 million deal. That guy is making $11.15 million per year, and he's a role player.

I know your point is how desireable Green was last off season, but man, he's been absolutely terrible offensively this year.

Yes he has. No doubt about that. I'm really just illustrating how a guy who is a clear-cut role player is making over $11 million per year.

in todays NBA a guy like AC is definitely worth 10-12 mil per I expect us to pay him whatever we thought we were gunna pay Lenoard and vice versa

Ain't it grand to know that the Spurs aren't 100% infallible? I love it! Maybe Green will be the first squirt of grease on the skids....

Crabbe isn't going anywhere (unless we're getting a big time star back).

Yes. Untouchable. :)

The Nets don't really have leverage here for a trade with good return, which makes me think he won't be dealt.

The most I'd deal for him would be Hendo+Kaman, gets them out of a contract but they lose talent for basically nothing. So not gonna happen.

I'd take him if they agreed to that cost though.

I don't think we are going to trade anyone this year. Maybe in the off-season to try and get a draft pick, but otherwise I think the goal is to see how the team can grow. If these guys show potential in the playoffs then we might get to watch them play together for another season before making any moves. Then maybe we bring Kaman in as a coach after his contract expires and try to bring in a big name free agent. I honestly wonder if we need one though. I think if this team played together for 3 seasons we would have an extremely solid starting 5 in Dame, Crabbe, Aminu, Vonleh, Plumlee. With a great bench rotation of CJ, Davis, Meyers. That's a legit 8 man rotation, and if you start getting 3-5 solid minutes out of the other guys, even if only on defense, then you start looking at a deep squad.

Some idiot team is going to offer Leonard some stupid contract, and I hope to god we don't match.

It's worrying to me. I rhink Meyers has great potential, I think as he gets older he has better understanding of where to be/what to do on defense and when he does, he could be our 3rd star-talent player along with CJ and Dame, I think we should try our best to keep him in Portland.

Nah, I think Neil has a plan and isn't going to stray from it. Meyers is part of that plan but I'm not sure Olshey will offer any more or less than he did to Meyers over the summer.

I agree I think he'd more likely be an offseason deal. Could be an option if we strike out in free agency.

One other thing..

CJs NOT A BENCH PLAYER

If were not planning to match on Leonard we should trade him now. Need to get something out of him.

I hope Olshey looks for deals before trade deadline for Henderson/Kaman and possibly Leonard. What could we get for those players??
If any could be combined - we'd possibly end up with another rotation level player.

PS I agree-- CJ is starting SG. He's not all-star level, but he's fine. Address the other positions or bench.

Dude sucks worse than Tim Fraizer.
