Maybe. Can you prove that drinking helps rehabilitate knees, and keeps off weight? Oden himself even said he drank too much. Am I the only one who remembers this interview? Why would Oden bring it up if he didn't think of it as yet another excuse?

It's not like Oden stopped drinking after that, either? He's a Good Time Charlie who didn't take his injuries seriously, IMO. He'll be 26 years-old in January, and can't possibly be the athletic freak he was before all of his injuries, unless he is some sort of medical miracle.

I wasn't aware being an abstemious monk was a requirement of rehab.

He is unlikely the same player he could have been at 21, but you can't teach size or strength, which he has in bunches. It's a shame he didn't feel a bit more loyalty to a franchise and a fan base that put so much hope, energy and support into him. But after reading many of these posts, I am coming around to the idea that if I were him, I wouldn't want to be in Portland either.

Saying drinking caused all his injuries is ridiculous. Thousands of injured elite athletes are extremely heavy drinkers and make full recoveries all the time. Allen Iverson was an alcoholic with very few injuries until his 30's.

Drinking can make you fat and lazy and slow and overwieght, it can dull your performance, but it doesn't cause bones to blow up or chip apart. Especially for people in their 20's.

I'm sure there were parts of Odens rehab that could have been better, just like Bill Waltons diet could have been better, or Yao Mings offseason workload could have been managed better. Basketball is an intense impact sport and 7 footers have a very high risk of significant injuries, just the nature of the game.

MF creates scar tissue which can replicate the role of cartilage. Draco is correct in the effect, while not quite accurate technically. I think his meaning was clear enough.

Yeah thanks I agree the meaning was clear, MF can fix articular cartilage defects for a decade or longer.

I wish my dawg the best, hope he comes back healthy and a great season. Never did quite understand the hate for him, trust me, he wanted to be out there playing more than you guys can imagine! ImageUploadedByTapatalk1375082121.909766.jpg

I harbor no ill will to Greg. Just hurts what could have been

The Onion:

"Nike Releases Newest Odens - The Knee Brace.": Ha!

I love the Onion, and I get the humor, but it just bugs me that they have him lying down clutching his knee as the logo. That's like using Jordan lying on the floor after breaking his leg as the Air Jordan Logo. It would have been better to have him just succeeding in walking or with ludicrously bulky leg silhouettes.

Yes, I'm that nitpicky.

Oden is best known for being chronically injured. That's part of the joke.

You're assuming that the logo is clutching his knee in pain, but isn't it possible that he is rehabbing the knee post-injury? I could see that pose being an important part of regaining range of motion.

Repped.

I hear ya, it's kind of tasteless. Yet I wouldn't have a problem with a logo of Kobe grabbing his injured Achilles.

Thing is though, if that were real, and I injured my knee, I would totally want a Nike Oden Knee Brace. The mock-up in their picture looks pretty sweet, too.

You know, they really should have worked in some kind of penis support bracket too.

It's tough for me to think back to the Houston game where GO fractured his patella. The silence of the Rose Garden and the look on his face and the faces of our teammates still haunts me. Heartbreaking.

For that reason alone, I wish him nothing but the best. It would suck to go through life being thought of as a punch line, as being a "shoulda, woulda, coulda".

He wanted to be out there playing - just as long as it wasn't for the team that drafted him.

It really does suck that he never felt at home here. I can remember living in the Midwest and feeling as if it were alien to me, so I can certainly understand the reverse, except, Portland is awesome and Indianapolis and Columbus are really fucking boring.

Repp'd. Oden made some very ignorant statements about my town. That's why I'm not a fan and will not root for him.

He knew he'd be drafted by Portland or Seattle. When a player (in any sport) enters a draft, it's with the knowledge that it probably means relocating. Sure, you have spoiled brat Kobe Bryant coming snot nosed out of high school and saying he'll only play in LA, but everyone else relocates. The city rolled out the welcome mat. They were ready to fall down and worship. When Oden missed his first year, everyone said bummer, but he'll be back and worth waiting for. The city of Portland gave Oden every opportunity to be loved.

On the nose. Even after the 2nd microfracture, people in Portland were a little miffed by the unfortunate turn of events, especially after seeing the pre-season game against Sacramento where it seemed like everything clicked and we had the makings of a special elite team, with Greg dominating and the Spaniards playing circus-ball. But they were still embracing him as a member of the team, and hopeful for the future.

Greg was down to earth, wasn't really all that comfortable with the super-attention afforded a megastar, but he also didn't want to be ignored, and wanted to be in HIS element. Portland, it seems, wasn't his element.

it was like an arranged marriage for him and portland

portland was smitten and would have happily pleasured him orally without complaint until death

oden thought he could fool himself into falling in love but never did

hence the abomination of divorce

I know that if I was in his position I would've got pretty depressed too. Yes, even rich people get depressed. Yes, even rich people become alcoholics. Can't blame him for wanting a fresh start. What's he supposed to do? Kill himself? If a team's foolish enough to gamble on him, it's on them. Look at Philly with Bynum. And now Cleveland...

That was the greatest Blazers exhibition game I've been to. It was the first for me as a season ticket holder and it was Greg's first game with the team at home....it was a magical night. Everyone played their role.

Martell was ballin' in that game as well!

Oh, what could have been ... link

Whoever reported that Oden would make a decision by Monday is a god damn liar!
