Wait what gas station manager makes 250K a year? I have a hard time believing that.
I agree they should get a raise but the league needs to start making money.

Now one point though. That gas station is probably making a bunch of money every day.
There very nice gas stations, but yeah I was surprised when I saw the sign in person and it was over $200k

We take our Tesla or Rivian to charge at Bucee a lot on long drives too - in addition to gas pumps they have like no exaggeration 50 Tesla superchargers at some of them and its a nice spot to browse for a snack or use clean bathrooms while you charge.

Interesting tidbit on bucees - they spend nothing on advertising except for roadside billboards.

I couldn't believe when I was on the freeway in California and saw this one

Just imagine how many people pass this every day and have zero idea what its for.

From what I've read, I believe they are profitable (even with the WNBA's creative calculations) if you include the new media rights deal. The NBA would need to take a much smaller cut to get the players to 50% of basketball related revenue.

If they aren't willing to do that I am fully on board with the players starting their own league. Get some billionaires to help start it up and hire some elite executives to make it as profitable as possible while still paying the players 50% of basketball related revenue. This league would get all of the best talent.

Then if the NBA still wants a piece of the action it can buy the league out (as long as the players approve the sale).

Once you start setting this in motion I expect the WNBA and NBA will be far more motivated. I think the players would even happily accept a path to 50% of basketball related revenue within 5 years.
I think something along those lines would be a good type of compromise - have a few years the owners get a bit more to reimburse for prior losses then eventually the players get 50% for the long term.

Even if they don't do that though the owners are getting a ton of appreciation in their investment and could sell the franchises for massive gains. They bough into this league and started it up when it cost nothing.

It kind of the standard trick owners do where they cry and whine about how their losing so much every season - meanwhile years later they sell the team and rake in billions without having to give the players a dime.

You can't stop them from working if they don't have a contract.

The NBA can't tie it up. That would be kicked out of court almost instantly.
I’m thinking you are wrong on that. To start a new league you have to have venues and some form of tv deal. You would have to have sponsors and unless they tried to go completely independent from any current Venues, tv and sponsorship they could be tied up in court.
Going completely independent would be fruitless at best. They wouldn’t even garner the minimum levels they have now.

They could play in college stadiums.

I'm sure a competing network or streamer would love to get those games.

I doubt sponsorships would be much of a problem if you were truly starting a competing league.

The reality is, the NBA and other owners would cave long before it ever got to this point.

If all you did was made equivalent money it would still be worth it as long as you have the 50% revenue share.

So you think they could keep that league up and running using small venues and grabbing some streaming source without any major network. Then not getting anything from the main sponsors that the NBA uses?

I think it wouldn't last a year doing that.

The WNBA makes no money and is a bust at this point. One maybe two players are known beyond the city they play for. Would you invest in that?

Claims like these are the kind that undermine any legitimate point you might be trying to make

I think you'd go into it expecting to do that for the first year or two until it became obvious that the WNBA was not going to come around.

At that point I think the other sponsors and venues would free up. As would major network backing.

I would certainly rather go that route than accept less than 50% of basketball related revenue long-term from the WNBA.

Would I invest in that if I were Lorraine Powell jobs? Melinda Gates? Mackenzie Scott? Oprah Winfrey? Alice Walton?

Yeah, I think I would... I think a case could be made that these women would have a lot of motivation to float a league like this for a few years, And then start accepting paybacks that give the players 50% of basketball related revenue.

That would be an awesome move for equality for women. What a great story.

Believe me. They don't.
There are now 15 teams. How many players can you honestly name on the Seattle team just north without looking it up. I personally can't name one player.
And I'm a basketball fan....
Hell I can barely name all the Blazers at this point.

I honestly just don't see it at all. I would never put my money there but yes i could see someone with a lot more than me making a choice to subsidize a league for a while. If anything for the tax benefits at the very least. Yes those are very wealthy women that might be looking to finance a women's cause and yes they might sustain it long enough to get it to start turning at least even money. How on earth could they ever give up 50% of the revenue though?

The WNBA signed a 2.2 billion TV deal. Women college and youth basketball has a much bigger following than decades ago.

Just because you and a bunch of old people on S2 don't follow it doesn't mean nobody else does.

Wait. I did not say nobody follows it. How many players can you honestly name on Seattle’s WNBA team? Seriously without looking it up.
If you can name 5 you are one of very few.

I can name that for NBA teams but thats probably it. For sure I can't with MLB/NHL/MLS/F1/college basketball/college football. Not sure I can with NFL but there might be a couple teams that are close.

Had a work event at fancy MLS suite but I'd have much rather watched a WNBA game and each ticket was probably fairly expensive.

Anybody posting here is a hardcore Blazers fan - we're all one of the very few.

I’m with you on a bunch of that. I follow a few teams. Those I’m pretty good on.
I’m sure I will follow the Fire closer. That is if they play this year. I don’t have a clue who is on the Timbers.
Let’s just hope the WNBA isn’t shooting itself in the foot at this point. They just don’t seem to have much leverage in this negotiation.

This affects/affects us bro. I think another “pro” team in town is a good thing.
I didn’t say it was a bad thing. I just don’t give a shit about the WNBA & the Fire.
And I find the Fire’s social media team incredibly cringy. They use ridiculously exaggerated words/statements. For example calling Portland “the global epicenter of women’s sports” is laughable.

Emmmmmmm……. Definitely the women’s soccer capital without a doubt.

Everybody out here calling everything like that. For them it’s just a way to increase support from casuals. Like the fan mentality is that your team is the best, the country mentality is to be that the country is the best. Sometimes people can really just be told something and they will take it to heart.

Thats 100% a statement driven with the goal of garnering attention and support.

I’d hope the city would support the Fire. I’ll be completely honest, Ive been to exactly 1 WNBA game - it was in DC and it was the Mystics against whoever back in like 2012/13. I was visiting my uncle and he knew I loved basketball and bought the tickets. Nothing like an NBA game, but I would absolutely go to a Fire game and enjoy it. If I had the option to go to a Blazer game against the Jazz, or a Fire game against the Fever. I’m going to watch us play the Fever…

The WNBA is definitely on the rise. Could you ever sell me on the fire as a basketball consolation? Not a chance… But do I have high hopes for this city and it’s basketball history progressing the sport in the women’s league? Absolutely.

I watched a newscast last night about the WNBA contract negotiations. While they were discussing it they were showing highlights. Every single highlight was the Clark chick on Indiana. Not one highlight of any other player.

Mods, can we please change the name of this thread to “ if a tree falls in a forest and no one is there does it make a sound”?
