Seriously I want them to succeed and I truly hope the league sticks around long enough so I can take my daughter to a game someday. (I have a 3 year old I adopted yes I know I’m old). These ladies though need to stop this “pay us what we are worth” stuff.
Right now they are worth - $40 million. That means they don’t have a leg to stand on. Looks to me like the only way they will get paid well is through endorsements until the league starts to make money.

The WNBA is starting a 2.2 billion TV contract next season. This final year of the old deal the WNBA earned 60 million on TV revenue. WNBA revenue is exploding. The league's future looks great.

NBA players get about 50% of revenue but WNBA players get 9%. WNBA players max salary is only 250k and minimum is 62k. Seems totally fair for WNBA players to have a much higher % split.

Personally I don't see why the WNBA can't have a similar 50/50 revenue split as men.

Yes a larger split is warranted. But if she is asking for actual NBA money, then she is delusional

2.2 billion over 11 years is a tad bit less than the NBA's deal, worth 76 billion over 11 years.

Okay. I’m good with raises but that Reese chick wants NBA money.
How is that warranted?
Again I think they will need to rest a bit on endorsements until the league actually starts making some money. Remember 2.2 billion over 11 years is still only 200 million a year. You have 160 players in the league and owners need their cut.
Exactly how much do players expect?

No WNBA players are asking for NBA money.

They're asking for a larger split of the pie than the 9% they get.

They said NBA money as in a 50/50 owner player split..... Not a 200 mil supermax.

I never watch auto racing so clearly race car drivers don't deserve good pay.

Sorry, but you aren’t winning this one. There simply is no argument to this. Unfortunately this is going to lead to a lock out or strike right as our first season is about to begin. What a mess to ruin all this much deserved momentum. Business 101 classes need to be taken ASAP.

They need a bigger piece of the pie for sure, but aren't they being subsidized by the NBA at $10 million per year? How long does that last?

I think it stops with this deal. There should be enough to run the league and build it a bit if done properly. Expansion costs money so there needs to be some money spent. If done correctly they can earn from expansion in the future.
The thing with any business is that it takes hard work and patience.

My point is what they should be paid doesn't depend on what some rando poster does or does not watch.

WTF. Are you serious? A ton more people watch auto racing than the WNBA. F1 is one of the most popular sports in the world. It's HUGE in Europe etc. The top drivers make as much as NBA stars. The number of people that watch has a direct impact on what owners/leagues can pay their athletes.

Yeah definitely apples to oranges.

According to this site for 2024:
  • 2024 Total/Average Viewership to Date: 110.685 Million/2.838 Million Per Race
https://dailydownforce.com/the-complete-2024-nascar-tv-ratings-tracker/

According to the WNBA for 2024:
54 million unique viewers across ABC, CBS, ESPN, ESPN2, ION and NBA TV
This was the most-viewed regular season ever across ESPN platforms with an average of 1.19 million viewers, a 170% increase from last season.
https://www.wnba.com/news/wnba-delivers-record-setting-2024-season

So the WNBA had its best season yet by a very very wide margin but they're still halfway to matching NASCAR.

WNBA operating costs are somewhere between $80 and $100 million per year.

The new TV deal they just got pays the WNBA $200 million per year.

There is no reason the players shouldn't get a 50/50 split in the WNBA (players currently get about 9%).

That would give the WNBA $100 million per year from the TV deal alone, and they should have other revenue sources as well.

That would up the average salary in the WNBA to $640,000 per year. The average NBA salary is about 10 times that amount (or about $6.5 million per year).

The WNBA would be crazy to let this get to a lockout or a strike at this point. Absolutely start by playing hardball. But be willing to offer a 50/50 split.

Do you know what makes it hard to support the WNBA?

Caitlin Clark has been a major boon for the league. Just look at those numbers. In 2024 "an average of 1.19 million viewers, a 170% increase from last season." That's fucking insane. How many leagues see that kind of increase overnight?

And yet you have idiots like Kelsey Plum who seem to hate Clark for...... no reason at all.

Why does this make it hard to support the WNBA?

What's with all the posters trying to justify auto racing?

Crandc was sarcastic - pointing out pay shouldn't be dependent on one individuals opinion.

The 50/50 split seems fine IMO regardless of the exact operating costs.

When players are cheap it makes the players they play against not like them.

Constant flopping and shitty attitude toward opponents hasn't done much to ingratiate her to her peers.

Agreed. The only time it wouldn't be fine or that I would say they should think about accepting less is if the league were actually losing money or not making enough.

But they're making plenty. So now is the time to get that 50/50 split.

It feels like nobody wants to see the wnba fail more than…….wnba players. Just embrace new great players, play hard, stop with the complaining and appreciate those (few) players who have elevated the game a bit

Glad someone figured it out.
Personally find driving around in circles boring as hell.
Also irrelevant.

If we are going to talk about numbers and money that hasn’t kicked in yet, I’ll step aside because I’m not up to speed. But as far as how it’s been going the past 20 years, it’s tough to ask for more from a sinking ship. League is making GIANT strides in the past 18 months and I would hate for them to put that in jeopardy. Most definitely deserve a bigger piece of the pie, if said pie is getting larger!

My daughter’s college doesn’t have a football team, so the whole NIL thing with D1 athletes isn’t really impacting her and her teammates, but I am damn sure a supporter of woman athletes.
