As in,
Oregon City Pioneers
Lewis and Clark Pioneers
I'd like that as well.
Lewis and Clark is changing off the Pioneers because of its colonizer connotation.

Yeah I've heard something about that... But haven't heard when it's going to happen. The Women's basketball team just got new uniforms which say Pioneers.Lewis and Clark is changing off the Pioneers because of its colonizer connotation.
I think therein lies the problem, when the exploring and settling are only from a white perspective. When the land had been explored and settled for a very long time before pioneersYeah I've heard something about that... But haven't heard when it's going to happen. For what it's worth, I wrote a letter opposing the change. Pioneers has more to do with exploring, discovery, hard work, and skill.
If you look up the etymology of pioneer you find that it was originally French "pionnier," foot soldier, or scout. Over time, the term evolved to encompass anyone who is among the first to explore, innovate, or settle in a new area.
But they aren't named Pioneers from the white perspective... Nowadays when the term pioneer is used it is to congratulate somebody on coming up with a new idea or novel concept that proves to be beneficial in some way.I think therein lies the problem, when the exploring and settling are only from a white perspective. It's definitely true. Kinda breaks my heart a bit... I've never heard the word pioneer used in a derogatory manner. If true what a bunch of bs.
Its ridiculous. It's definitely true. Kinda breaks my heart a bit... I've never heard the word pioneer used in a derogatory manner.
The etymology actually includes being the first to use or create a path and "blazing" signs along the path (using slashes or colors) to mark the trail.
It wasn't about going fast (originally), it was about going first, and showing the way.
But "blaze" has more than one meaning. And I don't think leaning into that is necessarily a bad thing.
It can also mean one who blazes (fire)
To open or prepare for others

I have a fucking, Oregon
Pioneer Fishing License for $7, for being a resident of Oregon for 50 or more years!

They should change the name of the school too, if they're offended by pioneers.
Or they could do a Hegseth and pretend the school is named for John Lewis and Dick Clark.
