Yeah I've heard something about that... But haven't heard when it's going to happen. The Women's basketball team just got new uniforms which say Pioneers.

For what it's worth, I wrote a letter opposing the change. Pioneers has more to do with exploring, discovery, hard work, and skill.

If you look up the etymology of pioneer you find that it was originally French "pionnier," foot soldier, or scout. Over time, the term evolved to encompass anyone who is among the first to explore, innovate, or settle in a new area.

And has further evolved to mean those who explore new ideas, or innovate to make new discoveries.

I think the evolution of the word exactly describes what should be encouraged in college. Or really, in life.

I think therein lies the problem, when the exploring and settling are only from a white perspective. When the land had been explored and settled for a very long time before pioneers

But they aren't named Pioneers from the white perspective... Nowadays when the term pioneer is used it is to congratulate somebody on coming up with a new idea or novel concept that proves to be beneficial in some way.

But "blaze" has more than one meaning. And I don't think leaning into that is necessarily a bad thing.

I am for the name personally. I just feel the trailblazer is yes, the first, but also fast. Like when roadrunner left a smoke trail behind him. Blazin a trail.
Of course for me that could also mean enjoying a joint while walking a trail. :)
