"It literally pisses me off when people are like, 'She's not the face of the league.' What?" Cunningham said on her new podcast, "Show Me Something." "There's really good, well-known people in our league. I'm not discrediting them. We have a lot of badasses in our league. Hell yeah to that. I'm all for that. But when people try to argue that she's not the face of our league or our league would be where we're at without her, you're dumb as s---. You're literally dumb as f---."
It's no surprise to me that we have stars like Caitlin Clark, Sabrina, Paige Beckers, and even Angel Reese rise up after the WNBA did their huge funding round and put it toward a marketing campaign like they've never done before.
It doesn't take anything away from Caitlin Clark. I just think the WNBA is doing a great job of marketing itself now, like it wasn't doing before.
The NBA didn't market the W that way, or give it enough money to market itself that way, and it didn't generate enough revenue to afford to market itself that way. It took seeking outside investment to get it done. That took the vision of a new commissioner.
I have no doubt that Caitlin Clark could retire tomorrow and the WNBA would survive. There would be an immediate dip but they would still see growth over prior seasons and as long as it continues being run well it would continue to grow and generate profit.
The biggest problem with Caitlin Clark are her delusional fans that don't know anything about women's basketball.
I've said for years that women's basketball is more physical than men's basketball. It just is.
My daughters come home from every tournament with scratches and bruises all over their bodys (arms, legs, shoulders, face). They allow girls to slap and swipe the ball like they would never allow guys to do. Because guys would 100% fight about it.
Girls/women don't throw fits like that nearly as often. They absorb the contact and keep going. They get it done anyway.
It's incredible.
