The Point Guard This Team Needs!

No doubt. But we have as much chance of getting him as we did of Rose.

i'm sure if we traded oden for the clippers #1, roy for the thunder's, aldridge for the bobcats', & rudy for the t-wolves' it would give us a reasonably good shot at getting rubio.

I don't know. If we could unload Lafrentz, with a combination of Frye, Sergio, Bayless, Webster, and/or our #1 to a team that at the trade deadline is looking like they'll be picking Top 5, we might be in a position to grab him.

It's obviously a risky move. Something to talk about though. I don't care for any of the available point guards in the NBA.

Ricky is EXACTLY the type of point guard this team needs.

Anyone know of any other talented freshman point guards in college that we should be watching?

Hm. Portland drafted both Roy and Aldridge in the same draft. Ricky Rubio is more desired possibly than either of Portland's selections that year, but most would have agreed, before the 2006 Draft, it was a "pipedream" to get the #2 and #6 draft picks. Yet, we did.

In 2007, most NBA fans would have said it was a "pipedream" to win the lottery and select Greg Oden and move into the 24th draft slot to select Rudy Fernandez. Yet, we did.

Before the 2008 NBA Draft, again most fans would have screamed it was a "pipedream" for Jerryd Bayless and Nic Batum to drop down to positions that we could move up to nab them. Yet, we did.

So, it's conceivable that a team that doesn't have as great of a need at point guard could win the first, second, or third draft pick and deal that to Portland.

:)

How often do young (i.e. HS age) point guard phenoms pan out? I'm thinking of the Telfair's at one end of the extreme and the Stockton's at the other... All of the top PG's I can think of, there wasn't much buzz around them until they were 19 or 20, sometimes older. The Kenny Anderson types are somewhere in the middle, with solid but overall disappointing careers.

Rubio looks good (from what little I've seen), but good for a young guy... I would be pretty nervous mortgaging the team's future by trading a bunch of known commodities to get him.

no most fans would not have said those things were pipe dreams. they would have said the odds were against it, but certainly not impossible.

nobody knew who batum was before the draft lol, and it was almost a given that we would be trading up for bayless, augustine, or westbrook.

only if we want to give up one of our top 4 players.

I like Rubio. I think he will be awesome. Unfortunately, he is a like a rich man's Sergio. He won't really fit here just like Sergio doesn't. Rubio will be good, but not good enough to complete rethink your teams strategy just for him.

We do need a better ball distributor in the starting line-up. His name is Rudy.

I actually think most people knew who Batum was, he was afterall being projected to be picked in the top 13 for a while, much of the time by Portland. Simply getting Bayless with our 13th pick and Jack? I think all of us would have agreed that was a pipe dream.

I may be in teh minority, but there is only one ball to go around right now. A PG with the skillset of someone like Blake is best... can play on and off the ball, but better D.

If we want a playmaker at PG (outside of Roy and Rudy...) we have Sergio on the bench. I think we are fine, tbh. Considering the what we'd have to give up to get Rubio.

Err... and we have Bayless.

from what i saw few in this crowd were giving him much serious thought, and if we wanted him our being able to trade into position for him was not what anyone would have called a pipe dream.

i didn't say anything about the details. yeah most would have expected us to have to give up another irrelevant piece or two, but almost everyone knew we were trying to get one of the remaining PGs after rose, and there was a very good chance it was going to happen. the only real pipe dreams were rose beasley mayo.

the only way rubio is not a pipe dream is if his stock crashes, which isn't likely.

One possibility, though it would probably cause a riot in Portland, would be to anoint Rudy Fernandez as our SG of the present/future and trade Roy for Rubio.

at 17, Telfair could never have played as well. I'm going by what I saw of him in the Olympics this Summer.

Your use of pipedream is then different from mine.

Not true I was aware of him well before the draft. Leading up to the draft I was hoping that Portland would select him.

I'm sorry, but that's just flat-out wrong. "lol"

general speaking it certainly was true. obviously hardcore draft prospect junkies would have known, but your typical fan was concentrating on the NCAA PGs.

Why I like Rubio so much is his unique combination of speed, control, playmaking, AND defensive skills.

This is something that just one player doesn't have.

I'm in the minority, I'm sure, but I would seriously consider taking the team in that direction.

to me it means irrational, illusory hope. roy, aldridge, bayless, and batum were reasonably expected targets. there were lots of rational scenerios where we would end up with any of them. and everyone knew the exact odds of our getting oden months ahead of time, and we happened to beat the odds.

rubio is not a reasonably expected target because top teams in the draft would want way too much, and assuming we don't have multiple season-ending injuries to starters and decide to tank we have no odds at all to luck into him.

I'm in the minority, I'm sure, but I would seriously consider taking the team in that direction.

trading our emotional team leader, best all-around, and best clutch player for an unproven teenage PG with no NBA experience no matter how talented would set our championship hopes back years.
