If we get Ryan Anderson, Neil kind of went overboard on addressing the PF situation with Collins, Swanigan and Anderson. Which would lead one to believe Meyers and possibly Vonleh are on the way out.
From the NYK perspective, Harkless makes sense. He's still young, on a very reasonable contract and from NY. But, I'd much rather unload Crabbe's contract on them. Mo doesn't excel at anything, but is competent at most things. Crabbe excels at one thing and sucks at everything else - and he's older than Mo and makes twice as much.
Which brings me back to Anderson. When healthy, he's better than Crabbe, but he's also 4 years older, has never been the picture of health. His worst year is better than Crabbe's best year - that's the problem. This past season in HOU was the worst of his career (looking at advanced stats). That's a bit of a head scratcher for me. Most guys who play for Mike D'Antoni see about a 30% uptick in their offensive production. Anderson was kind of the opposite. Why? Was he already declining at 28? That's hard to believe since his game is based on shooting touch, not athleticism. Was it just a case of too many other shooters and only one ball in HOU? Harden, Gordon and Lou Williams all thrived under D'Antoni. Anderson, not so much.
To me, Crabbe's and Anderson's contracts are a wash. Crabbe is younger and healthier, in general, but Anderson is better, would start and play a bigger role. If only we were getting NOP Anderson, or especially ORL Anderson, it would be a no-brainer, but it seems those versions are long gone. At this point, Anderson is just as 1-dimensional as Crabbe, and I have been clamoring since last November that we need 2-way players at the forward positions. I think we have one in Collins, but if we make a trade that lands us Anderson, it makes me wonder how far out Neil and Terry think Collins is. Yep, only 19, young bigs take more time to adjust etc., but I want to see Collins get the minutes needed to accelerate his development and Anderson might delay that.
Unless we get something else of note out of this, besides Ryan Anderson, I think we're basically just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
