Looking at the projected cap space teams and the free agent class....there will be teams that strike out on FAs and come calling about Simons/Grant/Brogdon.

Philly if they don't get George?
Grant/Brogdon to Detroit?
Simons to ORL is obvious.

I really don't think it's going to be hard to get out of the tax, and they will likely be compensated for doing so.

EXACTLY correct.

If they're desperate, I'd be focusing on Detroit. Supposedly the GM is trying to save his job. Can they not absorb those contracts right now for the 5th pick?

Anyone know of a team with a late lotto pick to spare? Happy to take Advija off their hands.

Advija isn't going anywhere.

I could see a 3 way like this:

Lakers:
Vanderbilt + Vincent + #17 for Kuzma + #36 + '28 DAL 2nd

Wizards:
Kuzma for Vincent + #17

Pacers:
#36 + '28 DAL 2nd for Vanderbilt

Not until July 1.

The pick can be traded right now in principle, but just executed in July.

I still think 5 for Ant makes the most sense. I have no doubt Detroit would do it. I question if Cronin would.

#5, 7 and 14 in any draft can change the fortune of any team. Say what you want about a weak draft, but there is always talent that's passed over early in drafts. It's just a matter of finding the right guys.

They have the entire season to trade Thybulle to the Mavs if they want. Lux tax isn't calculated till end of the year.

Dallas is having some success with Derrick Jones Jr. ......for a lot less money. If they keep winning with him in the lineup they might choose to keep him. He and Thybulle seem like a duplication. (Defenders that often struggled with their shooting)

In the context of trading for another lottery pick, I'm much more inclined to let Grant go than Ant.

And with that said....

Brandon Clarke + John Konchar + Derrick Rose + 9th pick for Jerami Grant will work after the draft.

We can try to use 7/9/14 to move up if we ID someone we want earlier while also dumping the Grant contract.

Yes I'd much prefer keeping Ant to Grant. Although I'd explore trading both, and really it's more dependent on offers having a worthwhile asset coming back.

Well I agree that DJJ fits the same role just as well, but he earns the vet minimums and Thybulle is owed $23 million.

Was a horrible decision by Cronin to match that deal.

I dig that. Always liked Brandon Clarke too, would love to see if he can come back effective after his achilles. I'd be surprised if Memphis was willing to part with him, though.

We owe him 11 million next year. The year after is a player option which I would bet he will opt out.
Not that horrible for a 27-year-old who can defend.

Hard to aggregate commensurate salaries without Clarke.

couldn't Memphis guarantee Kennard's salary next season and trade him at the draft? IIRC, they'd have to send out a little more than 20M and Kennard's salary is 14.76M. They'd still have to add a couple of players though because there is a real drop-off in MLE level salaries after Clarke

Clarke is injury prone and isn't any good at ft's. He's a back up, but we already have Walker & Camera basically same size and player types but younger.

I looked at their cap and they're spending:

37M on Ja
34M on Bane
26M on Jaren
20M on Smart

Find it hard for them to want to pay 30M for Grant.

~150M for a lineup that can't rebound.

Kuzma makes way more sense. 23M next year but his contract is declining. Easier to match salaries with. Better fit since he actually rebounds. Also the Wiz are looking for another 1st rounder.

"Portland landed the seventh pick in the 2024 draft during the lottery, while also owning the 14th pick, and having four selections in the top 40. Scotto thinks the Trail Blazers could be looking for another first-rounder in exchange for Brogdon."

Wonder what the plan would be on adding another FRP in this draft?

I don't think we want to go from 5 rookies last year to 5 more rookies this year. I'd think we would either be trying to move up or flip some of these for a future draft.

They are looking for one not in this year. They may have to settle for one this year.

Probably because this draft is so weak, we have a better chance of getting a better pick. People will be less likely to give up picks for 2025.

I'll take all the unscratched lottery tickets we can get. I wouldn't be unhappy with a couple of high-floor guys like Knecht and Edey if we could also pair them with some boom-or-bust types like Buzelis or Holland.
