I am always a bit skeptical when Nippon Lgr's come to play for pay, and most definitely will always have serious reservations... Japanese players have not impressed me as a whole, with exceptions of very few bona fide international stars, ie Ichiro, Matsui, Darvish, Nomo to name a few successes, amongst a bunch of avg joe's or kim's, to lesser extents. If anything Japanese players show they often lack the stamina of a long haul season, a grinding out year. Like 59- said 200IP (?) or more...Darvish tossed >200 IP 1 time. Nomo 4, close to 6....is he a pitcher or a hitter. The great Bambino could do both, but it only makes sense to do what no one else could, and for Ruth we all know it was about power hitting,...what can Otani do that no one else can? Be an effective SP and DH....?? I'd like to see it, but doubt he could pull both off. Those are some Bunyan-Ruthesque shoes to fill...

Over his 5 yrs, he's only played in 403 gms, an avg of 80.6 gms.


big Q, can anyone pitch every 5th day, when used to doing so only once a week, and DH every day (with success) when he's not on a mound....?? the million $$$ Q-! I wish him big luck, but have lesser expectations...

1. there are many more cases than not, where Asian pitchers did not live up to the hype or developed arm problems and did not fare nearly as well in MLB as hoped. (the Yanx have experienced this multiple times)

2. he may peak at 102 but that's nowhere near his average FB...and as we know, velocity without command/location is not a formula for success...and he's yet to go up against MLB hitting.

3. he may hit OK for a youngster in Japan but it's not like he's tearing the cover off the ball and is hardly dominating Japanese pitching, much less MLB pitching.

4. as far as pitching, if the Yanx sign Otani where will they place him in the rotation?...and what about resigning CC?...and what about
Chance Adams, Justus Sheffield, Domingo Acevedo, Albert Abreu.

5. as mentioned, most Asian players don't transition to MLB as hoped and Otani has not yet shown that he can pitch in the range of 200 innings or so a year.


...look, I'm not saying that Otani is not "a young talent" because he is, "but at this point, that's all he is and again, having said that, "I do have some reservations".

couldn't agree more .... 1-5 spot on, bingo, bullseye, kachink of the horse shoe.

I'd love to see Otani turn MLB upside down, a 1 in a Million chance imo. Have to see Vegas odds once signed, if the do post any odds at all....odds of/on what, ???

(I swear Vegas is linked directly to Merlin the Magician's crystal ball)

Good points, and imo, if Ruth couldn't do it, why does anyone think a Nippon Lgr can-?? Not that Ruth couldn't do it, IT, just doesn't make much sense, having one's cake and eat it too, or leader in ERA and OPS....

exactly, or as you noted in the other text, wonder how much of his contract the Marlins are willing to eat.

Could be M&M boys Vol. II

IF, they can't/won't eat much of it, the Yanx should pass imo. I'd wager he'd rather return home to So Cal and play for his family, friends et al....can't beat the weather, little cold, laid back critics; but the hills burn to damn much around shaky town...
 
Ellsbury is the final remaining high salaried, non producing straw in the Yankees Drink. Don't want to see Stanton either, the Yankees have Judge. Don't need Machado, or Harper either. Keep the young hungry players coming into the system. The Marlins fleeced Seattle into taking Dee Gordon, lets hope Cashman doesn't get fleeced by Jeter in a deal for Stanton.
 
Twitter lighting up with reports yanks making significant progress in Stanton talks. Names being talked about so far is Castro and prospects but none of the top prospects. Didn’t think the yanks would be interested but maybe I’m wrong. If done is Stanton a left fielder or dh?

^^^Yeah, looks like it is coming down to the Yanx or Dodgers.

...Cashman needs to be smart here because although adding Stanton would obviously help the Yanx" offense, he needs to remind himself that this would be a "want to" deal and not a "need to" deal.
... In other words, since the Marlins are the ones who are somewhat desperate to shed themselves of Stanton's contract they need to be willing to compromise too. So giving up Stanton needs to be countered with the Marlins taking on either Castro, Headley, or Ellsbury.
 
Joe kayaks reporting deal with Yankees done. Stanton flew overnight to Tampa and is taking physical at Tampa today. Wowwww!! Can’t wait to see the details
