I know we're in the tax, but it's kind of frustrating we didn't use our open roster spot to recoup a 2nd round pick from the Hood trade. The Raptors gave the Nets a 2021 2nd rounder to take Greg Monroe off their hands. I'm not saying I'd choose Monroe over some of those other buyout guys (that we probably wouldn't get anyway), however there seemed to be some value in 2nd round picks this year and it would be nice to not be completely depleted of them in the future. Besides we could've just waived Monroe like the Nets did if there was someone else better to get.
I think they might use the open spot for 10 day contracts to kick tires on players and I believe they have to be signed before sometime in March to be playoff eligible....more likely we pick up a big rentalI know we're in the tax, but it's kind of frustrating we didn't use our open roster spot to recoup a 2nd round pick from the Hood trade. maybe my math is off, but as I understand it, doing that deal would have added Monroe's contract to the roster; it's a vet minimum I believe. About a 1/3rd of the season is left so 500K of salary and around 3M in additional tax. In other words, Portland would have been paying 3.5M for a future 2nd round pick...that seems pretty excessive
Can always buy into the second round
Not as easy as you think. People say that the 2 #2s Olshey traded for Hood are easily re-bought...it's far from automatic that Olshey can convince a seller at the exact draft spot he wants.
Also, there goes the cash he could have used to grease trades. But then, Olshey lacks the talent to make real (good player for good player) trades, so I guess that doesn't matter.
$3.5 million is how much GS paid for the rights to Jordan Bell in the 2017 draft. Last year both the Blazers and Pistons gave up two future 2nds for just one 2nd.maybe my math is off, but as I understand it, doing that deal would have added Monroe's contract to the roster; it's a vet minimum I believe. Nope, in both of those trades we gave up 2nd rounders too.Olshey got Layman by buying into the 2nd rnd. Trent Jr last draft. It's kind of his go to

$3.5 million seems about right.
Even if he had kept all those picks, the likelihood that those picks were exactly in the right spot is minimal too.I don't want to argue each of those trades. I want to argue that it's not an easy yawner to buy 2nd-round picks...at exactly the spot where the player he wants is available.

No way Gortat comes here. Blazers don't have enough time for him.I wouldnt mind bringing in Gortat, not to play just to teach guys likes Zach.

He also paid a #2 in the Layman transaction, not just cash alone. He didn't replace the 2 #2s he paid for Crabbe, the one for Thomas Robinson, the one for Robin Lopez, the one for Anderson Varejao, the two for Gary Trent, and the two for Hood.

Majority of Neil's do.And not having those picks changed things how? Majority of 2nd round picks never make it in the NBA.
Good move for the Raptors. They only had 10 players on their roster. Still room for more additions.
They’re now at 14.
They got 4 waiver additions:Good move for the Raptors. They only had 10 players on their roster. Still room for more additions.
I'm guessing that includes the two 2-way players?
