Washington Wizards center Jason Collins reveals he is gay

Good for Jason Collins! I'm guessing the amount of support he is getting far outweighs those who are criticizing him.

When a player signs on to be a representative for a major corporation like the NBA, he is being paid a heft sum of money to play basketball, not to give his opinion on homosexuality. So why is it okay for all these NBA players to be publicly voicing their approval of someone who is "coming out"?

Dude, your insecurity is really becoming apparent.

Just Shooter equating homosexuality to child molestation and tax cheating.

So this is the nba player Kingspeed slept with

Someone who follows KingSpeed's posts should compare his itinerary of cities, soon before he started his famous thread, to that of Collins. Was there an intersection of paths?

How did this thread turn into discussing incestuous relationships? WTF.

Somebody said this thread is about as interesting as kissing your sister. It went quickly downhill from there.

The inability/refusal to differentiate between consenting private behavior and non-consenting abusive behavior is staggering. Are you sure we aren't being trolled? :)

Today on OTL, as part of a larger, wide-ranging discussion on today's news, I offered my personal opinion as it relates to Christianity, a point of view that I have expressed publicly before. I realize that some people disagree with my opinion and I accept and respect that. As has been the case in the past, my beliefs have not and will not impact my ability to report on the NBA. I believe Jason Collins displayed bravery with his announcement today and I have no objection to him or anyone else playing in the NBA.

The classic skeleton fight from Jason and the Argonauts...the old skulls tell the miniskirted Jason to jump off a cliff...1963 state of the art special effects...I saw it then in a theater and we boys loved it.

So "consent" is all that matters? What about consenting adulterers, or consenting brothers and sisters who want to have sex together, or a boss and his female intern who consent to have sex together?

Two consenting adulterers? None of your business. Not illegal.

Consenting brother and sister? Again, none of your business. If they're not having kids, I really couldn't care less what two people do in the privacy of their own home.

Boss and female intern? Well, if it's not sexual harassment and he's not using his power to get sex, I really couldn't care less. Of course, the company might mind...

Are you sure you're a Republican? It sure seems like you want to control what everyone does in the privacy of their own home. Are you in favor of a "big brother" state? I get the impression that you want to thought control everyone into believing the same way you do.

Yes; he mentioned he was encountering a player while in Wasington DC; I of course thought the willowy bench player Jordan was the guy but it might be Collins

This is how I see it. If Collins doesn't put out for all his teammates; he should immediately be let go. The road trips can get really lonely and the players may injure their shooting hand if they rub one out every night.

Jason Collins' gay announcement not welcomed by ESPN NBA reporter Chris Broussard, who says he views homosexuality as a sin

Broussard said his religious beliefs prevent him from accepting anyone living a 'homosexual lifestyle.' Former Knicks forward Larry Johnson says gay teammate would be 'uncomfortable' for him.

...

Broussard said he has spoken with “people around the league” who object to the gay lifestyle. “Just because they disagree with that lifestyle, they don’t want to be called bigoted and intolerant and things like that,” Broussard said.

ESPN released a statement regarding Broussard's comments.

"We regret that a respectful discussion of personal viewpoints became a distraction from today's news. ESPN is fully committed to diversity and welcomes Jason Collins' announcement."

Broussard’s opinion is not surprising. He has stated it before in other forums. He offered it in 2009 when former NBA player John Amaechi came out saying he is gay.

“But America has become so politically correct — not to mention that, in my opinion, much of the media and Hollywood are promoting the idea that homosexuality is a normal lifestyle — that many players are afraid to voice their true feelings publicly,” Broussard wrote at the time.

Broussard is not the only one to voice some negative backlash. Former NBA All-Star Larry Johnson, who spent five of his 10 NBA seasons with the Knicks, tweeted gay men in the locker room "would make me uncomfortable."

It's fine they are just as public that they are against being gay. I support both sides.

Okay I will stop joking. If my son was gay; I would would him just the same. I have a gay daughter and I fully support her. I actually support Collins. It won't be easy for him. Then again, I'm sure his teammates already knew.

Well, it doesn't look to me like ESPN is moving to fire the guy. Why wouldn't they do it right away? For the most part, Disney has been a family oriented business. And ESPN really has no business promoting political agendas of any sort. Though Disney has become a modern and gay friendly organization.

I find his view disgusting, but I also question how you can have diversity if you stifle unpopular views. My preference would be that people change the channel when he's on and that'd give ESPN a perfectly fine reason to fire him.

To think that what Broussard says as a talking head is representative of the network or sponsors is rather silly, IMO. Did anyone here really think he was speaking for ESPN?

Really, companies only fire good employees if enough people (either in power or en masse) demand his firing. Doesn't seem like there's a big demand for it out there.

Johnson added:

"But that's not their fault - ever since I injured my back, giving blowjobs always makes me uncomfortable."
