I think you have to listen to offers for Deni. You could probably get strong draft assets for him. I am not convinced he will stay in POR when the time comes for two reasons: 1) He could get offered a ton of money on teams with more cap space. POR may not be able to match the best offer. 2) He may want to actually win. How could he turn down a huge deal from a great team that had cap space? POR has no signs, and I mean zero, of getting out of this shit show they are mired in. Essentially he left WAS for a similar shit show in a different time zone.

I like the guy, even with all the turnovers, but if you could prise a top 4 pick for him do you say no? Let’s just say for the sake of argument, OKC offers LAC’s 2026 pick which could be huge in this draft. Do you jump on it? I just don’t see him staying in POR if he gets a chance to leave and he surely will get more than one great offer.

Deni was traded, he didnt choose to leave.

The blazers have his bird rights, they can offer him more than any other team if they are willing to go over the cap.

Because of his low current salary they can’t offer him a large extension if they don’t have cap space, but once he hits free agency, Portland can offer him more than any other team.

thanks for clarifying that

theoretically, other teams can match a max Portland base salary offer. But the Blazers can also offer 8% step raises vs 5% from another team. And of course the Blazers can offer a 5th year when the other team can only offer 4 (unless it's a S&T...with caveats)

what might it look like? well, the projected salary cap for 2028-29 could easily hit the 200M mark, using that as a max contract:

30% X 200M = 60M base salary --> 10 max (4.8M) step raises in a 5 year deal = 48M --> 5-year/348M --> 69.6M/year

if he somehow qualifies for a super-max:

35% X 200M = 70M base salary --> 10 max (5.6M) step raises in a 5 year deal = 56M --> 5-year/406M --> 81M/year

nice job if you can get it

Whats one good team that has had cap space the last decade? The 6ers signing Paul George who then were 24-48 is the only one I can think of. We just don't see any teams with BOTH being good and max cap space.

While I'm fine trading Deni for a haul because we don't really benefit from his cheap contract now like contenders could - I don't think you trade him over fear of leaving in free agency. No team can offer him more money then the Blazers. Sure he might leave, just as any other player. But thats over two and a half years away in the summer of 2028 so there is no urgency unless yes its a massive haul.

I remember after the Dame trade people were kind of going nuts that we had all of Brogdon, Ant, Scoot, Sharpe at guard. But guess what happened - Ant got injured game1 for what 35 games, Scoot was injured for about 30 games, Sharpe was out a bunch of the year, and then Brogdon sat at the allstar break. I think we had like 3 games all of that season that all 4 guys played.

I kind of thought this next summer in 2026 we would have to choose one of Dame, Jrue, Scoot, Sharpe to trade. But with how the last few years have gone I'm wondering if its totally fine to just keep them all. Then we just appreciate if any ONE of them is both healthy and productive. Two being healthy is nice - we have starters. Three then we have a nice guard rotation. All 4 being healthy and productive just doesn't sound very realistic outside a couple games.

Rude! Also, unwise to say before trade negotiations.
I may have read this different than you did. I think the tweet is saying that they are going to shop Mathurin in order to obtain a better player at the 4 or 5 spot. So a big upgrade meaning and upgrade to their front court not meaning someone way better than Mathurin which I don't think is rude.

That team has a lot more wings and guards than quality bigs. They're starting Jay Huff at center.

Let the rumors fly.

So many bad teams wanting to blow it up, and so few of the good teams wanting to risk it all. There are going to be a lot of sad faces in places like Sacramento after the trade deadline comes and goes (and a lot of talk of "buyouts").

I don't think the Bucks will trade Giannis in the next two months.

Then in the summer they will shop both their 2031+2033 picks unprotected with a 2032 swap. That can likely get them a near allstar level sidekick.
