What if we trade nobody?

the Blanton acquisition was made just so the Blazers wouldn't show up on this list.
When did you become so cynical? I haven't been around as much the last few years but did life harden you? This trade was made because Schmidt's likes reclamation projects.

With Sharpe out, why risk improving the team when we are on a path to a pretty decent pick again.

I just hope they don't fall in love with constantly getting picks and forget about actually improving the team.
This is funny because I have been really clear that I wanted picks or prospects for Jerami and Malcolm who are win now players. So it wouldn't have been a risk of getting better it would have been a guarantee to either improve or at the very least maintain our lotto position while getting more pieces for our future in which I hope the team is winning... that's a few seasons from now.

I think sometimes we think trade player X or Y for picks and then we'll have more chances to strike gold!

I agree that neither Jerami nor Malcom really fit the team timeline (at least as the team exists right now). Still, I think having Scoot take a back seat and have to watch Brogdon play has improved his game. I think he has slowed down and being forced to sit and watch experienced players - even if they are not necessarily ideal for the team, provides learning opportunity for the youth.

That being said, in my ideal off-season I'd like to see Jerami, Malcom and Anfernee all traded.

All three have too much of a ISO/shoot first mentality for my liking. Ant has gotten somewhat better at assists but he is still largely a one-dimensional player. He scores. No defense, doesn't really get the whole team involved. Not a "team" guy, more of a "me" guy. That could be part-and-parcel to be "raised" by Dame & CJ, both known for ISO ball. In trying to be like them, Ant has become a pretty darn good shooter and a good offensive weapon but also like Dame & CJ, defense is anathema and there is too much me and not enough us.

This team is a year away from the playoffs, and those are key players who will be taking there. Why give away proven players for a couple of chances to roll the dice? That seems ill advised.

What do I know...Of the team of professionals building this team.

They're 15-35 and one year away from the playoffs? That's pretty optimstic.

But who cares about the playoffs if it results in us being first-round fodder? The goal should be to give this team the best chance at a championship before they have to start from scratch again, not make the playoffs or play-in next year.

Stepping stones. Very few teams go from 15-35 to 35-15 in one season. Make the playoffs, then figure out what the missing piece is to be a top four and go for it. We have picks down the road to go after that missing piece in a year or two.

It’s amazing that people don’t think we are so young we can’t grow into a playoff team and then make the moves at that time to put us over the top to a top four contender. We have the assets to add to the young core potential if they pop into a playin/playoff team. let them make it to first round fodder, then make the move to push them past that.
Seems very plausible to me. Not sure why more people don’t, and assume we can just be a lottery team and then spring into contender status all of a sudden.

You need to stop raining on other people's rain.

The goal should be to become a contender (3-5 years down the line) and then play-in/1st round exits are stepping stones on that path. That means making sure you accumulate enough assets to acquire that missing piece instead of hoping you can make a play-in by keeping veterans and then as they depreciate in value/production or leave in free agency trying to figure out how to replace them AND trade for that missing piece with fewer assets. A byproduct of doing it the right way is better lottery odds, which only help until the team is ready to win.

My entire problem with the front office right now is it feels like they're aiming for the play-in next year and are being too short-sighted.

Why should that be the plan if we can make it happen sooner? Isn’t that kicking the can down the road you were so adamant against earlier?

We have enough assets to find that missing pc down the road. Grant, a few firsts and one of our young prospects we draft this year could net an all star caliber player.

I love you man, but the constant stance of I’m right and everyone else is wrong is hard to watch at times. Keeping an open mind that ones’ opinions might not always be right is commendable.

Is this all sarcastic or just mainly sarcastic?

Everyone should stop complaining. Cronin likes where this team is going.
I really don't have a big problem with Joe saying that he likes where the team is going because no matter if it has a detailed path or not I'm sure he has a vision of where the team is headed in his opinion. My problem with that presser, I should say my biggest problem, is that Joe straight up said that he likes where we're at... like where we're at right now. SMH

That last paragraph is where you lost me. Of course I think I'm right. And you think you're right.

Grant in 3 years will be diminished value (in my opinion) as he's entering his 30s. This team isn't ready for an all-in move anytime soon. Why let him diminish in value compared to trading him for assets arent diminishing, clearing playing time for younger players, and stockpiling top draft picks over the next couple years? That to me is taking action to maximize a window when theyll contend.

Kicking the can down the road references waiting to put a plan in action. It's obvious Brogdon isn't a part of their core long-term. They did nothing.

I think I’m right but I try to keep an open mind. And to me, no one has said anything new to change my mind. It’s been the same thing cycled over and over. I see Grant’s value being just fine in a year or two. Back half of his contract and hopefully continues near all star level play, which I see no reason why he can’t sustain his play for another 18-24 months when we can push some chips in to make that big swing.
If you are right that it takes longer, 3-4 years then maybe you are correct he diminishes. But I see the raw talent of our youth hopefully blossoming next season and full bloom the following.

Brogdon is in a position we presumably no longer need to address with the future of Scoot and Sharpe so he can be the other salary filler to go get a max contract all star. Him, Grant and picks in 18 months, for an all star in position of need is possible. Aston and Brogdon and picks for a position of need could be possible.
In the mean time, let Brogdon continue to help the kids. And if we trade grant/Ant and picks for an Embiid type, extend Brogdon and let him be our 6th man. Contenders need deep vet benches and he could be that 6th man.
With that said, the best angle might be trading Ant/Grant or Ant/Ayton for that difference maker.
I see many options in 18-24 months.
This is, of course if the youngsters pop. But until we confirm whether they are the core future, I just don’t see it as big of a deal to make a move now.

My question is if we trade Brogdon in the offseason, or next year for a first, will those saying he will diminish in value admit to being wrong? Or if we make a package and swing for an all star and hit within 18-24 months, will any one of you admit to being wrong?

If we don’t/can’t do the above described, I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong. You won’t need to feed me crow, I’ll dish it up myself.
A self prescribed dish that VERY few around here can prepare or accept, from my experience here.

I think it's pretty cool that we got the Canadian young guy who's 6'8 and supposedly rebounds well for a protected future 2nd round pick..that's good use of a second round pick.

Cronin proved at the presser that he is a complete idiot and if this does not open the eyes of some of his fans / supporters then I am afraid nothing will short of two years down the road and this team is still rebuilding and no closer to doing anything.

Joe "I like it" Cronin. He says he likes the team, likes where we're at, likes the coach...

Joe, you have a team right at the luxury tax threshold that is a basement team and has lost to all the worst teams in the league, and "you like it"?

He seems to get excited about all the little 3rd string scrubs he finds that end up out of the league the next year.

Yeah his presser "dance" lost me in a large way, BS
