Is it possibly because they fear the potential negative impacts of said change?

Well a few that I know are concerned their Islands are over populated now. As we rapidly track on to 600 million folks is this country, I fear we do not know what we are doing either.

That is no fault of the Ainu. They're numbers are dwindling quite dramatically

Racism = Hey you different looking people who are only 1% different... We're afraid you're gonna take our stuff because we really don't know you, we just assume you are based upon very little info!

This reminds me of an incident several years back when the VA clinic was still in Bandon. I was there giving up some blood for tests. The nurse doing the task was a huge black fella, and I notice he was very good at the task, painless really and I liked his deftness. I complemented him for such, and asked him if he lived around here?
He said, Oh no! I drive from Eugene.

His intense no, sort of took me back a bit
So I asked him, Why not? That is a heck of a drive everyday.

He said, There are no black people here, and my wife is afraid to move here.

I saw him no more. Too bad, the price of being a racist I guess.

The VA clinic was moved to North Bend not long after this, and the ham handed Pollack that draws blood there may stick you three times or so before the tube gets wet.

I know. It may not be long before there are more of them living on the Islands controlled by Russia than in Japan.

The US has 327.16 million people....Taiwan by example has 23 million and is 3 times the size of the Big Island in Hawaii...same population as Australia or I believe Canada.

Higher than Austrailia lower than Canada. There is a lot of room in canada.

Yes but we grow perhaps more rapidly than most.
Right now Japan has about 39% of the US population but only 1/26th the land. Heck they are only 15 million less than Russia which has a land mass of nearly twice the US. Probably not a country that needs to take in folks.

You've never been to India or Brazil I take it

Ha! Room they have. I live there one year, with legal papers too. After one winter I moved. I left when it was 58 below zero and on the radio, I heard there was a cold front moving down from Northern Alaska.

Fear of unwarranted persecution and oppression is real.

So much so that the gentleman who was enriching your life with great device and care found what they believed was a safer place to work.

Probably so. I don't much care for the place. Too damn hot in the summer along with other flaws.

The biggest trick the devil played was letting white people believe that racism was only the collective actions of individual racists, rather than also being a symptom of systems that benefit white people over non-white people, regardless of intentionality.

The little ditty under your Avatar and handle is quite fitting.

That's a pretty American view though....Somalia has one of the worst records of genocide on the planet and it's ongoing....tribal systems of one people benefiting over another....and this is between non white tribes...it's no trick, it's a human problem..and yes...white domination of indigenous peoples is as guilty as any but it's not exclusive to whites only. These issues need perspective. I've cited examples of oppression and dominations on a global scale throughout history and in my view...all humans have these atrocities in their history and some still do. Romans feeding slaves to the lions for entertainment was pretty fucking horrible

This would be my understanding of it...but given that humans have common ancestors I think it's something that we all should get over...for instance the Hawaiian word Haole means empty of color or no soul....The Chinese phrase for anyone not Chinese has always been Guai Lo or barbarian ...yet both are accepted uses that most indigenous peoples don't think apply...I think any oppressed people's who've endured slavery or indentured servitude relate it to the European conquistadors that enslaved or basically grouped them into servitude or Hitlers ethnic cleansing bullshit in WWII....but literally this would apply to African slave owners and well as Irish indentured servants or Gauls enslaved by Romans ...etc....I think the whole term should be examined in context but our own American history has such a short span and modern day outcome that American slavery is seen differently from say...Roman slavery...it's a complex question...I taught a course in Taiwan medical college about topics of controversy and this one of the syllabus classes...the difference between race, culture and nationality....Native americans enslaved native americans...and on and on...to evolve as a human society of tolerant diversity I believe we should move on to better relations with all peoples...intellectually modern society spouts high ideals but emotionally we are not caught up to them would be my take. Ignorant behavior keeps these things from evolving...the book Guns Germs and Steel touches on some of this...in some ways racism is a distraction from classism or say the cast system in places like India where minority groups are actually called "untouchables"
wow...great comments!

I live in America, therefore I concern myself with American Racism.

Hey Barfo, could please help me understand this, thanks.

Depends on how you mean the question. I'll interpret it to mean that you didn't understand why I wrote those words.

It's a modification of a 'quote' from Friedrich Neitzche, with the phrase 'the abyss' replaced by 'Canada'.

Quote is in quotation marks because he wrote in German, not English.

Single quote marks rather than double because that's how I roll, usually.

Im just about done with the book "Imperial Cruise" and wow, they never taught this in my schools.
I know the book has been a bit controversial with some historians taking acceptation to some of the comments about TR & Taft, their conquest to civilize the east, by following the sun. The race to grab land and civilize certain races and cultures. It's amazing how TR set the table for WW2.

If you read the book I'd be interested in your take?
Thanks
