What will it take for Chauncey to get fired?

Pretty sure POR is supposed to be losing this year. You want a lotto pick or not? SAS and Pops, arguably the best of all time, didn't get Wemby by playing beautiful ball.

Danny Larue from dunc’d on had an interesting point about coaches—basically, he was saying that orgs don’t cycle through coaches enough. That the goal of any org should be to have one of the 10 best coaches in the league, and teams should be aggressive in trying out different coaches and discarding them as soon as it’s apparent they aren’t on that trajectory. Almost all great coaches show greatness early, and teams should be rapidly going through different options each season or two until one hits.
Too expensive to offer 5 year contract over and over. Suddenly you owe 20 million per year on coaches who don’t work for you anymore.

i don’t think you need to offer 5 year deals to new head coaches. We were foolish to do that with Chauncey (Neil’s last fuck you to this team). Obviously if you’re trying to pry away a big established name coach like Detroit did with Monty you can’t offer a 2 or 3 year deal, but for promising-but-unknown/unproven assistants I think teams should be focused on shorter deals. There are only 30 of these jobs in the world, the teams should have some leverage here.

Chauncey had a career drtg of 107 and was a 2 X second team All-Defensive player. Pretty sure that he understands how a defense is supposed to work. Why that's not getting translated to the team is a subject for debate.

just some trivial stats that probably don't mean much
: the year the Pistons won the championship, Chauncey was 14th on the team in defensive rating, AND 14th in DBPM. On the other hand, he led the team in both offensive rating and offensive BPM. Just maybe, expecting him to be a guru of defense based upon his playing career is looking in the wrong direction

"Guru of mediocrity" seems to fit better

This guy is difficult to listen to. I'd rather watch a bad Blazer team than listen to yelling YouTubers.
this screamy guy usually attacks all the playoff teams. Something provoked him to go after the cellar dwelling Blazers.

I'll have to take your word for it. His delivery is so poor, I can't say I'll give him a third chance.

I know we're tanking, but how many more losses like this before our young players lose what little confidence they have? How are Blazer fans supposed to care at all about the rest of the season? Time to bring out the bags:

I know what you mean. How can the players enjoy this shit? This is really really bad.

Oh and Billups has definitely earned a place on the hot seat. He should be fired. NOT saying it's his fault but any organization would fire a guy with his record and historically all time bad teams he is "leading" out there like lambs to the slaughter. He is not helping anything.

They just got Terry Stott's money off the books last summer after paying him for two years not to coach...they won't do that with Chauncey, they'll let him coach another season and maybe eat one year of his deal unless the team is sold and new management guts the staff. Chauncey as a coach is like Scoot...a talented guy with lots of potential that will take years to put a winning playbook together. I just can't see his old Colorado buddy Joe firing him at all.

next year is Chauncey’s last guaranteed year, if you can believe it.

We all know the team is trying to lose the rest of the games so how we're supposed to care is, we want to watch what our young players can do even in losses. The Oregonian said that Shaedon was recalled from the GLeague and will join the team on this road trip and that was on Thursday. That likely means that Shae practices with the team tomorrow and is available to play on Monday. That makes me care. Kris getting more usage makes me care. Seeing if Scoot can have some good games makes me care. Oh and for fuck's sake we're talking about 8 more games.

The thing I'll be watching most closely is if we can out tank the Hornets and Wizards on Wednesday and Friday, while also rooting for our young guys who are still available to play well in these losses.

Chauncey's duties are all over the map. He's being asked to win games with the star players, and develop the 10 pack of Cronin's rookies.

Real injuries and fake injuries, and a pocket full of bad assistant coaches. Some of his assistants had 0 NBA coaching experience when Billups picked them.

Coach Billups has the Cool Hand Luke persona down, nothing is bad enough to phase Chauncey. That's where his championship intellect is most effective. But it's being used counter-productive, as Billups winning attitude is stretched entirely too thin across a very bad basketball team that Cronin built.

80% of the "young players" that are playing right now won't be in the league next season, I think we'll get thru it.

Joe & Chauncey aren't going anywhere soon. They have at least 4-5 more years of rebuild in front of them with younger players added each year. Job security in a rebuild phase. Now, if they trade assets for a few more vets coupled with a youngster or two that pop, maybe 3-4 years?

I think we'll let Billups contract expire and let him walk. Jody is too cheap to fire him and pay for his contract and another coach's contract.

Jody's not "cheap". The Blazers are #11 in team salary. She bought a G-League team. She paid off Chauncey's good buddy Eric Bledsoe's retirement contract. She gave Cronin the OK to eat Skylar Mays remaining salary just to have a sneak peak at rookies Bouyea and Moore.

Jody even bought a new mascot for the Moda Center dammit.

Look... Jody took the best possible TV deal available at the time. She's providing the highest quality access to Blazer fans. ROOT blacking out games, and jacking up prices is not her fault. The other offers were far worse.

Trust *Danny Marang, he's the only person with true insider access and higher BB IQ then anyone in history

Jody cares, and she's not cheap. You're flat out wrong if you think so, and we'll continue loudly yelling straight into our microphones until your ears bleed and you're forced to switch the channel.

Neither the current coach nor the next coach is worth any extra money when the roster looks like this.

I sense your sarcasm. But really, what evidence do we have that she is cheap?

Even if she were, he's on the 3rd year of a 5 year deal, with the 5th being a team option. So firing him would only result in them having to eat one year, and he's not even making much.

I highly doubt money is going to weigh into this. I'd be very surprised if he he comes back. If he does....fuck this team.

They probably wanted to give him a break, because it's tough to fire a guy when you're also intentionally tanking. But all the signs are there that he is not a good coach.

As they should. You don't force a tank job on a coach and then fire him. That is bullshit. Give him a year where we don't "intentionally tank", and then by all means fire him if he struggles. And that year needs to be next year. Right now the only coach you will get to replace him is a re-tread or someone inexperienced and desperate for the job.

The Blazers have enough talent next year to make a run at the playoffs.....if they choose to. Time to stop sitting vets for fake injuries. The young players can still develop without starting.

This starting lineup is not that bad: (Not sure if we ever saw it)

PG: Brogdon (or Simons)
SG: Sharpe (or Simons)
SF: Grant
PF: Walker (don't underestimate Walker, every team needs one lunch pail player in their starting unit)
C: Ayton

I don't expect the new rookies to contribute next year, but I need to see who they are before I am ready to carve out minutes for them. And I
understand the reasoning for trading Brogdon, but if we didn't I think we would be more competitive next year. And the extra future late 1st-round pick we might get for him does not currently excite me. Give Chauncey one more shot. The worse thing that can happen is we get one more lottery pick.

Still exactly how long will Chauncey stick around for this? How many more press conferences will he be willing to give? How many more losses will he endure? How much longer can he stay positive in the face of another losing season?
