'Is Portland Over?' to run on KOIN 6 News this week

As the city struggles to recover from the multiple crises of the past year, KOIN 6 News is running a special report this week examining the responses titled "Is Portland Over?"

Different episodes will be shown Monday through Friday during the 6 p.m. news segment, and then a one-hour special putting all the stories together will be shown at 7 p.m. Monday, May 17.

According to the station, the series will explore how the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the city, which was then experienced as an apparent increase in homelessness, social justice protests that frequently turned violent, and a mounting trash problem.

Said Channel 6 news anchor Jeff Gianola: "Here's something that struck me while doing this series of stories. A man who runs Alpha Project, a very successful homeless transition center in San Diego, told me three years ago why he felt Portland struggled to get a handle on the homeless problem. He said, 'In Portland you have confused compassion with tolerance.' I asked Mayor Ted Wheeler about that statement, and I think his answer will surprise a lot of people. I think it also can apply to the violent protests, and the current trash and garbage disaster."

The series will be shown as Portland and Multnomah County leaders are promising to spend record amounts of money to address homelessness, clean up the city, and revitalize the economy. Much of the additional funding is coming from Metro's homeless services ballot measure and the American Rescue Plan Act approved by Congress after Joe Biden became president.

This week's episodes will focus on the following topics:

Monday, May 10: Portland's reputation

Tuesday, May 11: How protests were hijacked by violence

Wednesday, May 12: Crime and safety

Thursday, May 13: Homelessness

Friday, May 14: Restaurants

Monday, May 17: One-hour special at 7 p.m.

I wonder if this will put a definitive end to the question, "What's going on in Portland?"

Portland is close to a utopia. Sure it had some problems but they were all Donald Trump's fault. Once Trump left office everything went back to normal. Homeless people gravitate to Portland, and that's just a sign of the cities Love. And you won't be seeing many Nazi's or Klan members on the streets of Portland with Antifa there to defend the streets. The glass and window business is also booming in the area....

Who wants to be neighbors with @THE HCP ? Come check it out if you can get through all the fires and riots.

Why should a homebuyer care what "one Nike leader" said? That seems like super-weird ad copy. Can we also get a comment from a manager at Long John Silver's?

Why wouldn’t you just jerk off inside of the car? Seems a little more inconspicuous. Maybe he didn’t want to make a mess, I get that.

The car was probably locked.

Because Portland listens to their stars, so if Nike leadership is wowed so are the followers.

That's silly, rather than listen to some high ups at Nike they should consult the stars like I do. You'll get real guidance there.

Sounds like a great place to bike ride.

Psst, don't give away one of my most treasured secrets.

For that money you could purchase a ranch with 5 acres on a lake or stream, in Spokane.
Yeah, but then you'd have to live in Spokane. 'nuff said?

I drove through Portland for the first time in a long time on my way to go get my second COVID shot out at PDX.

Our city is a shit hole now. There is literally graffiti along the entirety of the free way from 405 out to 84 and all the way to the PDX exit, with tents and camps sporadically placed throughout. This is what lawlessness looks like. The Mayor and his people are so scared to stand up to the protestors and the vagrants that they have completely allowed the city to fall into disrepair. It looks like a city in dystopian future. I have never in my life seen it this bad. Our beautiful city now looks like a dump.
