...why is this even a story?

Here is the story. He's a good football player who led the SEC in several categories. Everything else shouldn't matter.

Yup, pretty much. What I will never understand is why so many athletes, celebrities, or anyone else for that matter, feel the need to openly broadcast/proclaim their homosexuality ?

...I mean, do I go around flapping my arms and proclaiming "Hey everybody, I'm heterosexual !" ...???... No, and why?...because it's completely irrelevant.

...doesn't matter whether you're male or female...if you prefer men or women, fine...just keep it to yourself.

Agreed... It shouldn't matter yet it does... and ironically, the same people "praising" Sam and Collins and the like for coming out and broadcasting what should be private are the same people chastising people like Tebow and others for talking about his faith..... go figure

And I'm quite sure someone will call us klansman or something for discussing how it shouldn't be a story...

I guess that tells you how bad the Olympics are that there is no news feed worthy of dislodging this story.

...^^^hey, once you're branded as a "racist" and a "bigot", it follows you for the rest of your days.

I'm just hoping this story goes away in a hurry.

I just turned on the news just in time for sports reports & the top story is.........wait for it...................Will the NFL except a gay player? WTF????

...this issue, which should not be an issue at all, is the very thing that Michael Sam himself, chose to create by making it public.

Agree again. This shit is STILL the top story on sports center this morning. Now they're talking about the courage it took to come out. And A G A I N....will the NFL except him?.

What's next athletes announcing that they're jewish, they're amish, they're into S&M, Or perhaps that they have a foot fettish. Give me a F'king break.

...yeah, still trying to figure out why it was so "courageous"...ESPN was even comparing it to what Jackie Robinson did...unbelievable.

ACCEPT, not except... sorry... been bugging me

...lol, since hammer was the first to whip out the grammar correction book...here's one that bugs me; when comparing 2 or more things, the correct word is "than" not "then".

there is a huge difference between a player saying he is jewish or Arabic or muslim vs stating that he or she is gay. Why do you say is this a story...well for one..look at all the controversy there is with gay marriage. if it is not a big deal than why is this such a issue? shouldn't everyone be equal? guess what..in real life people get discriminated for being different, whether that difference is being an African American or choosing who he or she sleeps with.
This individual is telling his story because there are so many who hide in shame about their sexuality who SHOULDNT. If he can do it...and make some change in how people think, then the next one who follows would have an easier path to burden.

...uhhh, "hiding shame about their sexuality" is one thing and is an emotional problem in and of itself... but flapping your arms while proclaiming your sexual preference is another thing. A person's preferences need not be broadcast to the whole world.

...once again, you fail to grasp the crux of point.

you are so wrong. not when there is still prejudice against people based on their sexuality.

...Jesus- fucking- tap -dancing Christ...do you have ANY fucking idea what this thread is about?...do you EVER actually take the time to read what has actually been said?

...this is not about sexual preference or homophobia...it is about people getting on a soap box and purposely making it known what their preference is...and why they feel the need to do so. Do heterosexuals feel the need to do the same thing?...No, and why?...because again, it's unnecessary.

...again, try taking the time to actually read and take things in their proper context. I don't give 2 shits whether someone wants to have sex with a man or a woman...instead, this topic is about why an individual's preference is not kept private, where it should be.

BINGO... the point of this thread isn't that that their preference is right or wrong... it is that it shouldn't matter and shouldn't be broadcast... you want to live your life, fine, but don't tell everyone and then expect an award for it... I don't care what you say or feel about the subject... it is that it shouldn't be talked about... it shouldn't be a big deal... Tebow is chastised for publicly proclaiming his faith... so why is that wrong, yet publicly stating your sexual preference is an award winning move????? That is what I have an issue with... not that someone is or isn't gay

This seriously SHOULD NOT be an issue. You're gay, congratulations, play football & move on.

No, this is much much worse. This is a man that just used his sexual orientation as a weapon of influence and manipulation. Did you read the story about his dad being surprised?

Look, now if he falls in the draft or isn't drafted at all there will be calls of bigotry and racism and protests against the NFL. Might as well change Washington's team name to the Rainbowskins. What he is doing is taking the limelight, not based on his talent and what he can contribute to the organization he purportly wants to join.

OK, he gets drafted, if he doesn't start when he wants to, will the coaching staff be labeled? He plays and takes a violent hit, will the player be charged with a federal hate crime?

Labels divide, the folks that wave these flags know it. This isn't about righting perceived wrongs, this is about retribution. Sports represent some of the last bastions of traditional Americana, the NFL has been the next target.

Before anyone decides to throw a label at me, only one fits...I'm an American.

Well put Totus. And unfortunately you could be right about his status in the game. If he doesn't start or plays much or even if he's cut you just know some group is going to say it's because he's gay. So all this did & I hope I'm wrong is put pressure on the coaches to make sure (whether he's worthy or not) that he gets more of a chance to make a team. Otherwise you just know that someone will label that coach as a bigot.

Exactly... I don't need to hear about it... and I would even remove the congratulations... I'd say, You're gay, play football and move on... being gay isn't something that deserves an award... it is what it is... but we don't need to hear about it nor should we hear about it... all that matters is if and how you can plan

Like I said, should be an issue....

That being said... do you think this announcement will help or hurt him in the draft? Do you think teams will clamor all over him to be the first team to have that openly gay player? Do you think teams will want to avoid the media circus that may follow having the first openly gay player? I don't think it should be a story no matter what, just curious how it will impact everything
