Why Vince Carter should be benched

1. Rest Vince

If Vince is truly injured, and I believe he is, there's no point in playing him, esp. since we have no chance in the playoffs. Let him rest up and rehab now until next season if he's still here.

2. Vince cannot raise his value

There's no question that Vince's value is at an all time low right now. Playing an extra 20 games isn't going to raise his value by anything substansial, since it is so low already. If the Nets want to trade him, wait until the summer, after he as become healthy, and after his value has risen from teams wanting to make a change after being bounced in the playoffs, and thinking that he is the key to that.

3. Test RJ

Give RJ another chance at being leader. Now he'll get all the shots he wants, and the ability to show if he's capable of more than scoring now that Vince is gone. Gives the Nets FO a chance to see if RJ can survive on his own and if he's worth keeping in the core.

4. Raise RJ's value

Unlike Vince, RJ is young, coming off his best statistical season and has a lot more value. Also, he can still increase his value. If he is able to play well without Vince, and boost his stats even more, his value will continue to rise. If the Nets want to trade him in the summer, this will be an excellent way to raise his value and entice other teams to give more back.

5. Give more playing time to Devin and Marcus

If Devin and Marcus really are our PGs of the future, then the Nets need them to play lots of minutes, at both the 1 and 2 spot, and play together, as soon as possible. The Nets need to see where each is at in their development, at what position they can best contribute, and if they can truly play well together.

6. Test Ager

Our only backup future wing. Lets give him the minutes and see if he's worth keeping.

7. Increase our draft pick

Without Vince, despite how bad or good people claim he is playing, this team is likely going to be even worse, which will increase our draft pick to a more promising position.

I'm in agreement with this if he's hurt. Actually helps increase his trade value if everyone knows he had a legitimate injury slowing him down.

I also would like to see what Frank would do without him. It would be a test to see if you keep him too. Great opportunity to focus the offense on fastbreaks in the open court and in Nenad in the post and RJ and Harris playing off of him in the half court... let's see what we have. And get a good pick.

True, so far his "injury" has only been mentioned off-hand. By benching him, the Nets are making it known that he IS injured, so his poor season has an explanation come summer trading time.

The only thing I take objection to is that Vince's trade value will raise significantly by the summer to get a decent deal out of him. The Nets have been trying to trade him, and there have been no takers. Like you say, his value is down right miserable right now. If we do nothing (sit him down) I don't see how that raises his value. I wouldn't put too much stock that a GM would make a knee-jerk reaction and make a trade right after the playoffs; not before the draft, or the beginning of next season before he gets a chance to see how his team plays (similarly to "waiting for krstic"). I'm all for letting Vince rest up, and I'm for giving other people playing time and securing a higher draft pick. However, I say we should expect a Vince-trade no sooner than December 15th.

I agree with point 1, if he is injured, he should rest.

I really don't agree with the rest. Why? Because the Nets will be bad, bad. (one bad defintely not enough) I could throw in awful, horrid, and unwatchable. They should play the rest of the season in Finland or Latvia.

RJ is not going to raise his value if he is the focus of the other team's defense all night long. More than likely he will end up getting injured trying to do more than he can.

Devin and Marcus are already getting plenty of minutes. Honestly, Devin is probably a 30 minute per night player if he is to use his speed when he is in the game. Marcus is maybe 20 minutes a night, any more and it is impossible to win since his matador defense gives up anything he gets on the offensive end.

Test Ager, yeah, that is worth using my season tickets for.

I like the final point. I enjoy the post season, but the best the Nets can hope for this year is an embarassing 4 game sweep. So, might as well get an early pick.

Worst case scenario, Nets finish in 8th and Mavs finish in 9th. The Mavs would have a lottery pick and Nets would not only lose the Mavs pick for this draft, but they would actually pick after the Mavs. Ouch.

Good post.

I like the idea of shutting him down for the regular season, and then leaving open the possibility of a return if we're in the playoffs or a playoff-type situation (a win and in situation or something like that). He certainly isn't helping his value playing hurt, but he could GREATLY help his value with a few big games here and there to help the Nets make the playoffs. That's much, much, much more likely if he just rests.

They would only shut him down due to injury, which has been whispered for a few months. If he has surgery on that ankle then his value goes up because everyone in the league realizes that 1) his diminished play all season was a result of a nagging injury and 2) it's the type of injury that players easily come back from.

Eh, my gut tells me that GM's aren't going to want to lock up big money on a 30 year old (31 this year) who just had surgery to try and fix a problem that bothered him all season.

It's a tough position, that's for sure.

The age and contract thing is true, but shutting down for injury I think improves his value over him just not playing well for no good reason.

I'm really liking that concept of Carter/Swift for Marbury and the Knicks pick and then buying out Marbury.
