Sabas came to the blazers after his athleticism had faded by a decent amount. Sabonis at Yang’s age was very athletic and he played in an age where the game was very different. Hopefully Yang can continue to improve and become what Sabas would have been had he started his career here. Had Sabas come to the Blazers sooner I’m wondering if we could have gotten that 90s team a ring. Both players are very fun to watch!
In that scenario the Blazers would have championships in 90, 91, and 92 at least, IMO. Maybe more.

Fun fact: Sabas was originally drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 1985 with the 77th pick. The pick was later voided because he wasn't 21 yet.

Atlanta wanted to pair him with Dominique Wilkins!

He's Arvydas not your-vydas!!

Nervously watching our #11 pick Cedric Coward look really good so far. Hope we don’t regret trading this guy away.

Regret was my initial reaction just based on how much Yang jumped compared to where most prognosticators had him going. Plus, I was hoping we’d draft Coward. It’s still too early to tell but that feeling of regret has definitely dissipated. I’ll give it more time before it comes back.

I want to say the Hawks were the first team to draft a Russian….. Alexander Volkov. Could be totally wrong, I just remember that for some reason.

Alexander Volkov was either a MMA fighter OR he was in the 007 movie From Russia with love. I'm not sure which.

I remember him and Serunas Marcilonis (Guessed on the spelling) came over around the same time. And if you look at Macilonis highlights….. Deni is a clone of him!

BUMP….. I’m not going to do this again. But PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF JESUS……have realistic expectations for this kid. Seeing with my own eyes how hard he is working. Loved by his teammates.
This is EXACTLY how things were supposed to go. Right?

It's Šarūnas Marčiulionis so you did a helluva job with your guess. He was really fun to watch on O like Deni. He was a better passer than Deni is now but Deni's still young. Deni is also a lot bigger than him and a bit more athletic. With all of that said it's a great comp.

Just shared this in another thread. I LOVED this guys game!

Do we think that Yang will ever fit with the style of play the team has adopted? Would we be better served with a much more mobile smallball center (instead of Jerami or Kris playing C for long stretches)? Imagine if we had Aaron Gordon for that role...

Yang wouldn't fit with any style of play right now unless it was a full-tank style of play

and if the Blazers won't play Reath, why did they keep him and waive Jabari Walker? And yes, Portland needs a more mobile smaller-ball C, especially if Timelord remains on Medicare
