Zach Lowe and Amin Elhassan think we don't make the playoffs

Cotton Fitzsimmons has more CotYs than Phil Jackson and Red Auerbach combined (yes, the award started in 1962).

The Squad of Mikes (d'Antoni, Schuler, Brown and Dunleavy) all have as many CotYs as Larry Bird.

Popovich is tied for #1 (he has 3) with Pat Riley....and Don Nelson.

I won't even talk about the Sam Mitchells, Don Chaneys, Del Harrises, etc...Let's just agree that COTY is probably not the end-all metric for coaching quality (like, say, MVP or ASG appearances might be for a player).

Doc won COTY in Orlando. He was also a famous player from his days with the Knicks. I wouldn't have forgotten who he is. Avery Johnson hasn't coached in 7 years. Have you forgotten about him?

Doc was a known player, not a famous one. He wasn't anything special.

His best years were with the Hawks anyways.

And winning the COTY means shit. Mike Schuler won COTY...big fucking deal.

You remember all of these guys. Point made. I was arguing that even if he hadn't won in 2008, he'd still be remembered. Never said Doc is a good coach. I think he is though.

Eric, you or I could have coached that Celtics team with Garnett, Allen, and Pierce all still at the end of their prime. Add in Rondo and a few other really good role players and that team coached itself.

Also, I don't think we (who post on a message board) are your average fans. So you, brian, nate or I knowing Mike Schuler won the COTY, or that Sam Mitchel was once a player on the Yippin' Puppies, isn't the same as the average fan knowing who Doc Rivers was had he not coached the Celtics *after* they traded for..

actually fuck it, reasoning with you isn't worth it. You're right.

who the fuck is doc rivers? Sounds like a name in a western movie.

I was listening to the Zach Lowe podcast from October 10th and they both said we are their pick to miss the playoffs. And then there was the gem where Elhassan said that we only won against Houston because we were *laughs* the worst possible matchup for the rockets.

Lowe was slamming us all season last year as well. Fuck that guy.

I don't think they have them figured right. But I don't think Canzano does either.

But let's say for instance this is indeed the case. Most of us thought this team had a good offseason. How many of you will be saying the same thing if they do miss the playoffs?

If we miss the playoffs, I don't think it'll be because we swapped No, Mo! Williams for Blanky and Kaptain Kaman. It'll be because someone was injured. We don't have players on the downside of the career who can suddenly hit a cliff (think K*be or KG), we don't have rookies that we're counting on to play like superstars-in-the-making, we don't have high-beta players in key roles (like JR Smith or Mo)...

They are who we think they are, and they have to just execute on an overall average of their abilities to make the playoffs. If we get hit by the injury bug then that can suck, because then we DO have high-beta, unproven talent in key roles (starters, 6th men, crunch time, etc).

yup. If they stay reasonably healthy, I expect they'll do at least as well record wise as they did last year. Kaman gives the 2nd unit someone they can run the offense through rather then just having another launch off the dribble as the clock winds down... of course his health has been pretty sporadic. Robinson &/or Freeland continuing to develop would also help their cause but the biggest thing I'd like to see is the development of Dame's pull-up off of drives and pick and rolls alla Tony Parker. That would make them truly tough to defend/elite IMO

STOMP

I was listening to that podcast as well and im pretty sure both said that they dont see any of the west teams falling out of the playoffs and it was a question as if one team fell off who did they think it would be.
I believe the reasons were because we did almost nothing to make us better defensively and if either LA or Lillard went down we would be screwed. The last one you can argue for any team though.

I truly hate when people say this. The same goes for EVERY team in the league. If Tony Parker goes down just how good are the Spurs? If Chris Paul goes down how good are the Clippers? If Kevin Durant has a setback and is out for longer than 6-8 weeks how does that affect the Thunder? Exactly....

Can we please put this tired ass argument to bed?
