Out of this list of free agents and 13 mil available; which players would you go for? I remind you that we would need to let Hickson go if we want 13 mil free; otherwise we would only have 5 mil free; pending the cap hold on Hickson.

My choice is:
Jarrett Jack. Probably gonna get laughed at; but he plays good defense and wouldn't mind coming off the bench. He is capable of playing under control too.

EDIT: I made a mistake on the amount of cap space we have.

thought we could only get to 12-13 mil in capspace? and that includes letting Hickson go

And who else? Surely you aren't spending the whole wad on someone like Jarrett Jack.

Depends on who we get in the draft, but assuming we aren't in the running for top tier free agents, I'd rather see us completely retool the bench and stock it with proven veteran role players on short term 1 and 2 year contracts. There are a ton of options, but we could easily add three players like Jose Calderon, Kyle Korver and Jermaine O'Neal. I know these guys are old, but all are still productive and are used to coming off the bench. Jermaine is actually having a VERY good season down in Phoenix with a PER = 18.7. Korver would give us a 3-point specialist off the bench (3FG% = .420) and Calderon would give us a decent back-up PG who can run an offense (too bad he can't play defense). You could get all three of these guys (or similar) for about $10 - $12 million. And, think how much better we'd be with these guys coming off the bench than what we have now.

BTW, there are a LOT of other possibilities in unrestricted free agent veterans that could be had cheap. Those were just the first three that jumped out at me that address our current bench issues. Feel free to mix and match as you see fit.

Calderon would be fine with a back up role?

BTW, I'd really love to see us go after Tiago Splitter, but with PER = 20.5 last year and 21.5 this year, he won't come cheap. I suspect someone else will overpay him and offer him a starting position, or he'll just resign with San Antonio. Hell, I'd be fine offering him Hickson's starting position (until Leonard is ready to start in another ~2 years), but not if we have to overpay to get him. I'd rather just keep Hickson and pick up Jermaine O'Neal on the cheap than overpay Splitter.

we need some greg anthony, stacy augmon types off the bench

Calderon would be an excellent addition....... but I also think we should resign JJ!

Horrible addition. We already have 1 PG that has no idea how to play defense, we don't need another

I wonder, if Hickson is in the current plans to re-sign, if it makes more sense for us to make a trade now that would take away the rest of our remaining cap space, and have the MLE to work with instead. Basically, thinking that Hickson likely gets something close, I would think, to 6-7 a year? Maybe more, but I doubt less. So if we were willing to pay him 7, it would loeave us a little less than 6 in cap space to use. I'd just as soon use up that cap space before free agency in a trade, and then have 5 to use in the form of the MLE.

The problem is none of our current back-up PGs know how to play defense OR offense. At least with Calderon, we'd be 50% better on the second unit than we are today. And, lets face it, with a bench that averages a historically bad 12ppg combined, we could use someone coming off the bench that could generate a little scoring to keep us close while our starters get their 4 minutes of rest per half.

With both Hickson and Jack being in this thread, calling either JJ just confuses things.
