Game Thread 2024-25 GAME #28 - BLAZERS @ SPURS - DEC 21, 2024 - SAT - 5:30 PM - CHARGE - BLAZERVISION

Let's hope so.

Our team just didn't have the effort needed tonight IMO. You have Shae as hot as he's been in any games and we don't go to the hot hand enough. We lost to a better team but a lot of our guys played lazy defense, and stupid offense... especially in the second half and there just doesn't seem to be enough want to.
We basically have to be shooting lights out to make games competitive.

Last week's Spurs game, Dallas game, Denver game we shot lights out in all three. Two we lost and one we won on a buzzer beater.

When we aren't shooting lights out we get blown out between 20-40 points.

this "showcasing" fable is one that just won't die
Spurs announcers were saying Grant is shooting the worst percentages since his rookie year.

We missed the boat on trading him for any sort of value. I'm just hoping we can swap him for a worthless Middleton type of contract that ends a year or two earlier. Think I'd throw in a couple 2nd round picks to do it.

I don't think Joe is showcasing anyone. I don't think there are better players to take Ant's and Jerami's minutes and I think Rob is on a minutes restriction and they're trying to bring Donovan along slowly, so Deandre starting makes sense for now. That being said, I think it would hurt leverage in trade talks if Ant, Jerami and and Deandre start coming off of the bench.

I'm just hoping that we don't have to talk about these three for much longer. I know the odds are against us being rid of all three by the deadline but wouldn't it be nice?

Crazy that all of our players shoot worse every year... But it's their own individual fault. The coaches have nothing to do with it

I guess Billups is not playing Deni much tonight. Wtf? He is without question the best all around on the team. Makes no sense to me. Grant is doing nothing so why not bench him and develop the young talent?
Every game thread bro, every game thread.

ok....and?

I didn't say Grant was being showcased. Somebody else did. I'm saying showcasing role-playing vets doesn't work; it's a fable. But some people keep assuming that's what the Blazers are doing with Simons-Grant-Ayton

maybe Cronin is hoping against hope it will work, this one time. Or maybe, just maybe, since Cronin was reportedly the one who convinced Olshey about Simons, and since he was the one who gave Simons a 100M deal; and since Cronin was the one who maneuvered into the TPE and draft pick used to land Grant, and was the one who gave him 160M; and since Cronin apparently coveted Ayton for 2 years before he was able to trade Dame for him...maybe Cronin views those guys as his guys, his successes, and is being stubborn about giving up the dream and is then setting prices for the 3 that no team would dream of paying

it would be foolish of course and hopefully, he isn't that stupid, but it was Cronin's decisions that that are responsible for the 5 vets on the roster and their 117M/year in salaries

But we knew this in SEPTEMBER when the roster was filling out.

Actually no - when Ayton and Ant aren't playing our defense is MUCH better so we don't need to shoot lights out to have a small chance to win. We just need to shoot solid as we did against Minny Atlanta Rockets etc.

I knew this Blazers squad would lose a ton this year, seems that's what your bringing up and nobody disagreed.

I didn't know they would lose most the games when they're actually shooting great - that's been the surprise.

Ant/Grant/Ayton need to gone ASAP, ridiculous they are still here. Cronin needs to pull his head out

In September most realized that not only was this team lacking talent in general, but no consistent shooters like we had in the past. Plain and simple. So for you each game to be utterly shocked and dismayed that we are getting thumped….. just baffles me. Continue if you must, but you are just making it harder on yourself. Good luck tomorrow night FAMS!

You know what has helped me get thru this. I’ve got a season recording set on all Duke and Rutgers games. Made this a lot easier. Unlike last year, there actually is light at the end of the tunnel.
How is last years draft class doing by the way?

Exhibit A: Here's the Atlanta game you mentioned. Below average shooting, but still a victory.

I was just agreeing with you about showcasing known commodities in the league being very rare if ever happening at all.

Let's hope that Joe's desire to keep these three guys has faded and him overvaluing them doesn't keep them here much longer... I wish all three the best but on new teams.

He said without them, we don't need to shoot lights out, just solid.
I re-worded the post. I was posting it as evidence that even with below average shooting (much less than "lights out" that some people said was required) the Blazers can still win.

I'm not surprised we have a crappy offense and lose a ton of games as you just detailed, yes that was expected. I expected us to win about 15-20 something games this year.

I'm surprised we lost the Spurs game 10 days ago and Dallas game before that when we shot LiGHTS out both of those games. The very rare games where we shoot lights out generally should be some of the rare wins.

I don't get what I'm "making harder" on myself as your claiming. It seems like you think I care if the Blazers lose this season, or I expected they would win or something. I don't and never did.

If Blazers management had a clear rebuilding strategy I'd be all about that. Unfortunately even if we get Flagg/Harper/Ace with how terrible we have built this roster I'm not sure we will know what to do with those talent even if it's a hall of fame level rookie brought in.

Hope I get proven wrong by then. Trading one of our vets by Feb would be step 1.

I’m a little more optimistic about the future of some of the young’ins.

Advija, Camara, Sharpe and Clingan are all really nice pieces under 25.

We need a better coach in here developing. A young wizard similar to OKC and Memphis head coaches. They’re out there.

I wish billups would have to watch this. I think the guy has done others also. I don't know if it is all Billups either. sometimes laziness, sometimes just no common sense or sense of geometry.
