I like the off-season moves too. I want to root for player that want to be here.
However, even though I think CJ is a good character guy, and a hell of a basketball player, I recognize that he and Dame can only get us so far in the playoffs. To be a contender, we need to take a risk.
Getting a second all-star is difficult, especially for a town like Portland. We drafted Dame. Check. Now how do we get that second star? Free agency? Nope. Draft? Quite tough, especially considering we have one all-star already who is doing a great job keeping us just outside of the lottery.
The only realistic chance Portland has of getting that second star is through a trade. Everyone likes to hope for a consolidation trade where we send out a bunch of solid starters and get back an all-star. Those don't come around very often. And when they do, that all-star is going to have flaws. It's just a question of if Portland can hide or manage those flaws.
I think this is a rare situation where Portland has a serious chance of grabbing that second all-star. Does Ben Simmons have flaws? Absolutely. But I think Portland, and especially Dame, is perfectly suited to take advantage of his unique skill set. Now how much beyond CJ do we offer is the question. My comfort level is CJ + (young talent) + future 1st. Should we go higher than that?
