Billups extended

Monty Williams was fired in Phoenix (after 4 years and some success) with 3 years left on his contract and $20M.
Monty Williams was fired from Detroit (after one year) with 5 years left on his contract and $65M.

Congratulations to Billups, though I was hoping for a coaching change. I will celebrate Billups when he has a .500 record. [116-211 and counting]
Yeah what the hell is wrong with Monty Williams?

IMO, Billups isn't going to greatly impact the core direction of the franchise long-term (good or bad), so this move doesn't bother me much.

The main issue with the organization is above the head coach or GM. Until that changes, I don't anticipate things to look drastically different without some serious luck breaking our way.

Not surprised and hope Billups can continue to grow. I like how he has molded some of the players from a 'growing into the league' standpoint and he has them playing better defense. I hope he adds an offensive minded assistant as that seems to be lacking and there are some in-game adjustments and calls out of timeouts that still needs growth going forward.

Teams like Denver and Memphis are firing their coach before they make the playoffs again. Blazers are re-signing there’s after another fruitless year.

To be fair, in terms of the on-court performance, Billups's team's trajectory is headed in an opposite direction as Malone's and Jenkins's. Not to mention, all those surrounding the team seem to love Billups, whereas things don't appear quite as copacetic in Denver and Memphis.

Now if we enter next season with Simons and Grant I’ll be mystified, mortified and malignant..
get prepared to be triple M'd then as I can't imagine anyone is pining for either of them after this last season. Sure they'll have crap offers available where Portland gets someone else's overpaid unproductive malcontent, but unless either of those two is malignant off the court they'll probably stand pat. I guess that is a possibility that one or both get miffy if they lose their starting spot, which should happen. While Simons is the more movable of the two because of his expiring deal, my guess is Cronin wants to keep his 2026 offseason options open and have Simons and many others come off of Portland's cap giving them the possibility to be FA players. If the young core continues to improve, guys are going to want to join them.

I agree with the first part. But I view ownership much the same way. As long as the GM and coach are competent, then I don't
care that much who owns it.......as long as they have billions of dollars, are willing to spend it, and don't interfere with trades and the draft. Paul got too involved IMO, Jody does not, and I like it that way.

Yes, Jody is not the greatest owner, but it could be a lot worse. What can I say, I am still pissed we traded Moses Malone because they could not afford both him and Lucas.

Probably true.

based on the PC, it sounds like both cronin's and billups' extensions came because of our run mid-season.

seems shortsighted.

It certainly could be looked at that way but then this team as it sits probably could have made the playin and maybe even made the playoffs as it sits?
Honestly it's just so hard to gauge because I doubt they ever really tried to push for the playoffs.
How could the team have made the playoffs as it sits? They're 12 games behind 8th.

BitterJones is right.

I mean, it's not like they spent money on a g-league team, or hired one of the most respected scouts out there (Schmitz), or hired Sergio Oliva, one of the "top 40 under 40" guys.

But being bitter is more fun.
If hiring a scout is the 2nd reason you have for an ownership group showing it wants to contend, you don't have good enough reasons.

I would have preferred a change but I don't mind Chauncey as a starter coach to instill certain values of defense and effort into the players. I can see the results with our foundation. Sharpe has come a long way in this department. Chauncey took responsibility for the offense so I'm hoping to see improvement there.

I can’t blame him for playing the vets but he did play them too much. I (we) will never know the impact the FO had on this. If the vets are gone I am willing to see what he does. If they aren’t and he plays them like this year, they are screwed.

Does he get any credit for the rise of Tou and Deni? It seems you would have to, right? Both of those guys are now highly desired by knowledgeable fans around the league and probably more than a couple of gms too.
Young players don't improve and he didn't have the right pieces and there's nothing he could do.

Young players naturally improve and he should be here for 7 years.

Don't you think the alternative is just as short-sighted? Especially when it comes to Chauncey.
Kind of a "damn if you do and damned if you don't situation. I guess he could have been a good little soldier and kept losing, so he could get fired and not land another head coaching job because of the record.

I have no idea if he is a good HC or not. I am not at practice, and I am not in the huddle. Sure, who he starts and when he uses his challenges, or timeouts, are all important, but not as important as how hard his players play for him. And from what I see from watching every single game, is that they do. I see him teaching every time a player comes out of a game. (Ok, not every time, but a lot) Young coaches are like young players, they can get better each year as they get more experience.

Now it’s on Cronin to do what’s right this summer. If all the vets are back and Chauncey doesn’t promote Scoot and Sharpe’s growth, then that’s also on the GM. We can’t run everything back with a draft pick and Billups as the only moves of significance.

For all the hate Billups gets, it looks like Denver and Phoenix came knocking but he opted to stay with Portland. Id say he is fairly well respected around the league. Ill trust the league over some here. Complaining he started the vets over the core without context is just ridiculous….

So many people act as thought they know sooo much more than the paid processionals. Gets nauseating at times. Having different opinions? Sure. But the negativity on Billups is out of line snd off base.
