Kind of a "damn if you do and damned if you don't situation. I guess he could have been a good little soldier and kept losing, so he could get fired and not land another head coaching job because of the record.
I have no idea if he is a good HC or not. I am not at practice, and I am not in the huddle. Sure, who he starts and when he uses his challenges, or timeouts, are all important, but not as important as how hard his players play for him. And from what I see from watching every single game, is that they do. I see him teaching every time a player comes out of a game. (Ok, not every time, but a lot) Young coaches are like young players, they can get better each year as they get more experience.
