Trade Blazers trade Simons for Holiday

My thoughts on the trade:
  • Initially, I was annoyed. Picks should have been coming, not going. A dream trade for the Celtics.
  • Next, I have been considering the possibility that Holiday, even at his age and salary, has more trade value than Ant.
  • We're blowing an extra $5 mil this season on Holiday compared to Ant. Our cap situation is becoming tenuous.
  • Sounds crazy, but Giannis may be more willing to be traded to the Blazers to play with his old friend Holiday. A starting lineup of Holiday, Tou, Deni, Giannis, Clingan seems amazing.... and we'd still have a very good bench.
  • Grant (or Ayton) and Holiday for Paul George and #3 (Kon, possibly) gives both teams what they want, imho.
  • Spending a bit on fanspo has suggested that Holiday would be plausible to over half the teams in the league, even though only 2 teams have been mentioned as having interest.
Giannis on our team might be the worst shooting team of all time.

I'd love to have him but we'd need many more moves.

How much salary did the Pels clear in their deal today? Send Jrue home.

As someone who's been pretty happy or at least open-minded about what Cronin's been doing the last couple of years, I can't find a way to rationalize this as a good trade if the reports are true that the plan is to keep Holiday. You gave up resources, hurt your cap situation, didn't address your weak offense, and got a guy who missed 20 games last year. This wasn't a team that was going to be put over the top by one more unless it was getting a superstar. Holiday isn't. This is at best a treading-water move that probably hurts us more the longer Holiday is on the team.

Blazers weren't duped of anything - they agreed to the Grant deal eyes wide open and knew Dame was not coming back with the #3 pick used on his replacement. Ramona Shelburne reported at the time both the Blazers and Grant were totally aware of the future Dame situation.

Grant did play well that first season of his comtract. Many national reporters such as Nate Duncan were surprised the Blazers didn't cash him out in a trade as he had value at that time.
Did you really think I needed reminding that you're the champion of the stinks on ice view that there were realistic trade options for Grant? The season following July 2023 when he gleefully penned his name to the monstrous escalating contract that he'll be on for 3 more seasons he played okay, like at the level of an average NBA starter. Unfortunately for Portland, his contract allots him an All Star's percentage of the cap. Whats the best ability? Of course it's availability and the new 30 year old capped that meh of a season by missing 1/3rd of it. Unfortunately for Portland, not being available is an established norm for him as he's averaged missing over 1/3rd of the season for the past 4 seasons.

That you couldn't tell this was a massive overpay at the time it went down is not a badge of honor. Jerami's play never justified that sort of contract and sans Dame Portland was clearly no where close to a playoff level roster, so wheres the motivation to tie up finances with an oft injured not that great of a player cresting 30? I've no idea what Shelburne "reported" but the time line speaks for itself and many posters called it as such... is there some reason you didn't link this mystery reporting that you're holding up as justification?

STOMP

If he is pissed and still on the team by opening night I contemplate coming to Portland to boo him for his first introduction as a Blazer. Money well spent.

Why would we trade for an old vet that doest want to be here? Just reroute his ass, if that truly the case.

A good point was brought up: POR has to get a frp to convey to CHI in order to get the swap from MIL. In other words they have to make the post season to ensure they keep that swap etc.

He'll come around. His best strategy is to play nice with us and we'll trade him during the season. But by then he'll have fallen in love with the team...

There is just absolutely no way the plan was to just take on an old guys humongous contract and that’s it. The more I think of it this just doesn’t make sense. Jrue has to be going somewhere else.
Pretty simple - Blazers want to push for the playoffs and think the old guy is a better piece.

I don't understand these posters that think Jrue has shit value - but think that some random team is going to later send us a haul for that pile of shit.

Jrue is coveted. But at his price tag whats the pieces that they have to give up? That's the tough part we got saddled with. Boston didnt want to have to make that decision and took back a subpar player to have us make the decision.

Giannis seems like a pipe dream - but with our bucket of Bucks picks are the team best positioned to do that deal. I wouldn't be shocked if Dame even did a buyout to join on as well.

That's what I was thinking last night when everyone was talking about Ant. Fans who thought he was shit were pissed we did not get more for him.
