Trade Blazers trade Simons for Holiday

My knee jerk take is, this if a fucking terrible move. Jrue is coming off of one of his worst seasons, has three years on this contract... it makes us older and seemingly would be a barrier for Scoot getting starts and experience.

We went from hopes of a first and 1-2 years of bad money to a washed 35 year old owed 100 mil over 3 years. And to add insult to injury, we paid extra picks for the privilege.

Hmm, wish he wasn’t 35. Was he still a lock down defender last year?

I feel like he’s getting dealt again.

This might also indicate they are more likely to take somebody ready to play in the draft, rather than someone with more long term potential?

Ayton, Grant, all of Milwaukee’s draft assets, and who knows how many first round picks for Giannis?

I don't mind this deal at all as long as it means Scoot and Sharpe starting.

Also, Holiday even at his age, is far more attractive to a contender than Ant. I can see teams wanting to give real value for Jrue.

I think Jrue will be helpful to our young backcourt and team.

Yeah he's old and money left isn't ideal, but he's still a better player than Ant and fits what this team wants to be while also allowing Scoot and Shae to play more on the ball and see what we really have in them.

Thumbs up for me.

I bet we see another trade. The pick and maybe Ayton for an upgrade at some position???

Yeah, if the idea is that Jrue will come off the bench then I hate this trade a lot less. I just doubt that's what we'll do.

Here is the rest of this: This season, if Holiday has a bounce back year, his value increases way beyond what they gave up: a poor-fitting guard on an expiring deal in Anfernee Simons, plus two distant seconds. So, maybe they could flip Holiday before the 2026 trade deadline to a contender. Or maybe they keep Holiday until the final year of his deal in 2027-28. At that point, he'll have a juicy $37M expiring deal that could be combined with assets to go get a star. Teams need salaries to make big trades. Jrue becomes that piece after only two seasons. Acquiring Holiday isn't a misread of the Portland timeline. It's about the future: Turn Simons into a player who fits better now, helps facilitate development, and gives them a tradable salary when it's winning time.

Someone please tell me what Cronin is doing cause if this and the the pick at 11 is the only thing that happens then I am going to want help in running Cronin the FUCK out of Portland and the state of Oregon.
I honestly don't mind Scoot coming off the bench behind Jrue...

Especially if we're trying to compete like everybody says we were to end the season.

Just as well take a bunch of swings and do as good as you can. And then when the team gets too old in a few years the new owner can rebuild.

Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe look to move him at the deadline to someone who thinks they're a solid guard away from competing.

Surprised there's such a negative reactions to this deal here. I like it for next season as our good defense gets much better. Going from one of our worst defenders to NBA defensive team level. Seems like he will also accept letting Scoot run the team better than Ant would.

Yes it's a bit concerning that salary will age bad with this deal.

However if Holiday plays well at the start of the year he has the track record to fetch a much bigger trade haul. I wouldn't even be shocked if eventually we flip him to Milwaukee for more picks and Dame - while Boston/MIL refused to talk.

Also the extra 75ish million is only 2 additional years of salary. I'm super glad we didn't give Any some 4 year extension instead of this move.

Overall I'm just glad we finally broke up the AytonGrantAnt big3. Hoping for cap reasons Grant is next.
