This debate reminds me a lot of the COVID situation. It seems like everything else, peoples opinions are based on their life experiences. I feel a certain way about COVID because I lost 4 friends/family members within 10 days back in January. Reading some posts on here, there is no way people have ever lost anybody from it. No way! They wouldn't fee that way if they have.
With this topic, thinking maybe the same rings true. I have opinions about rape because I have 2 people VERY close to me in my life who have been raped. It is TOUGH! I have very strong opinions about the topic based on these experiences. Curious who here has dealt with this situation and who hasn't.
I argued with a woman who was claiming covid-19 was less deadly than the flu. Only to find out later that her father died of covid-19 a couple weeks prior. But she was adamant.

I don't know how to deal with that... I just felt bad for arguing with her.

....so HCP...how do you like the Chauncy hire and have you ever talked with him before?
I don't know how I feel about the hire. Xs and Os wise, hasn't coached before, how can I judge good or bad. Leader and personality wise, there have been some VERY successful players who went on to be not so good coaches. His resume as a player should demand instant respect. On the flip side, there have been journeymen and some who barely made the league who ended up crushing it. All a crap shoot if you ask me. I've always said, Coaches get too much blame and too much credit.
My Denver TV guys said he is great to work with. I met him at a dinner in Vegas 2 summers ago during summer league. Got introduced by our former head of security. Really cool dude if that means anything.

There’s so much irony in all of this.

One minute, we’re convicting someone of rape though he was never charged. The next, we’re discussing our fucked up judicial system that convicts those in the court of public opinion, is rigged against minorities/POC’s, etc. I’m not arguing any of the many sides. You can understand people’s confusion, though. I don’t know how to feel and I certainly don’t feel comfortable sharing a real opinion without being tried and judged myself.
I was thinking the exact same thing. The same people that are outraged are probably the same people that believe the judicial/legal system is broken and want a more progressive/rehabilitative system where actual criminals are given the ability to reform and have a 2nd chance to reintegrate to society. Yet they have come with their pitchforks and want to cancel a man that was never even charged with a crime.

I hate everything about social media. It's given every hater, wacko, and bully a place to harm, control, and spew venom. I don't twitter, instagram, and rarely go on facebook because of that.
Depends on what you use it for. I share my photography with family on Instagram. We are able to stay in touch with family all over the world with facebook. And shit, my daughter might just get a college soccer scholarship because of twitter.

Thats not the point. People are rooted on both sides when there's a sweet spot in the middle.

The sweet spot is that we don't know what happened and we will never know what happened. End of story. It's funny. One of my favorite shows ended on a cliff hanger. The writers said that they liked to leave it up to the fans to decide how it ended. REALLY pissed me off. I'm one of those people that wants to KNOW how it ends. I imagine a lot of fans can't live with not knowing how it ended. Some people are completely fine with not knowing. There are people who loved the ending of the show. I personally hated it. So for some people, even the chance that Billups is guilty is enough for them to never want to support the guy and it will never be okay for them, short of evidence coming out that he didn't do it.

Forget the rape thing for a moment...

But doesn't this feel a lot like the hiring of Mo Cheeks?

Great leader...

Won a ring...

Point guard...

Defense...

Yadda yadda yadda.

True but Billups is much closer to playing recently than Cheeks was

No. I highly doubt they’re similar. Mo Cheeks was a worthless coach. He would just sit there during practice while his assistants did all the work. He was a total fraud. McMillan at least would get in there and teach the players. He was extremely involved in practice. Based on what we know about Billups, he seems more of a teacher.

if dame came out and said he was happy with the hire, would people turn on him?

he may have already said something, ive been mostly avoiding this thread tho

OK, serious question. Living out of area makes it hard for me to judge. Is the Billups controversy a tempest in a Twitter pot or are there serious misgivings among fans and community at large?
I’m out of the area as well, but lived in Portland my first 40 years and still have a ton of friends and family there. It’s a bit of both to be honest. But I think the Twitter Warriors definitely outweigh the community.

It’s bad optics, and it’s easy to see why some people are upset, but Billups was accused, and that’s it. Are we really out here trying to cancel people because of maybes?

Fuck every single one of these stupid ass motherfuckers. The man was never charged and settled in CIVIL court, not criminal court, probably in an effort to make the shitshow disappear.

BOOM

If the shoe were on the other foot and this was a white coach with the same allegations against him, would there be the same outrage? Or would these same fans be praying for him? Honest question.

YES, I think it would be the same

These same people expressing outrage at the Billups hire are mum on the whole sexual harassment case surrounding Jody Allen. Where’s the outrage? Where’s the “I’m not gonna be fan anymore until she sells the team?” The outrage is because Billups is black and this city is showing its true colours.

I don’t think this is a race issue

Bunch of fucking hypocrite lunatics. Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out, motherfucking fair weather fans.

YES

But they don’t have to be concerned about someone as important as the OWNER of the team?
I’ll bet most fans have no idea about that. They are starting to because other fans are throwing it in their angry faces though. What kills me is our media not banging that drum. If you wanna try and bury Billups , which I don’t agree with, fine, but where is the same passion towards the owner? She settled just like Billups.

people are mad cause the blazers didnt hire becky hammon (for the most part, people wanted her cause shes a woman)

let that sink in

I mean… Dame endorsed two sketchy guys. It sure as shit feels like Dame is blaming other people for his own choices.

Dame is coming off as a fraud and a hypocrite.
The writing is on the wall.
Seems like Lillard will not retire a Blazers any longer.

I did think it's about time a woman gets a shot. But some unqualified woman failing helps nobody. There are a lot of women in the world. There are only a few people qualified to be NBA head coaches. Hammon is both.

Oh hell fucking yes

https://www.slamonline.com/archives/chauncey-billups-some-teammates-played-better-high-marijuana/

The conversation on marijuana in the NBA has mostly centered on its medicinal use, but according to Chauncey Billups, some NBA players use marijuana to improve performance.

While on ESPN’s NBA Countdown on Friday, Billups said that he wanted some of his former teammates to play while high on marijuana because “it helped them focus-in on the gameplan” (2:34 in the video above).

“I honestly played with players—I’m not going to name names, of course I’m not, I’m not that kind of dude—but I wanted them to actually smoke. They played better like that.

“They had big-time anxiety—a lot of things that can be affected—that it brought them down a little bit. Helped them focus-in on the gameplan. I needed them to do that. I would rather them do that sometimes than drink.”

I’m wonder what’s appealing about Hammon other than her biological sex and chosen gender. Would she be a good fit here?

She’s a devout Christian and proud American who wears a crucifix and comes from a mostly white red state.

She refused to kneel for the national anthem, which I assume means she has no issue with cops killing Black people.

She was very close to Kobe and Vanessa Bryant and their girls, which I’ve read on Twitter means she must condone rape.

If she was a white male, she wouldn’t be in the conversation for the Portland job. Or, would these things be ignored in progressive Portland because of her chromosomes? I’m so confused at what I’m supposed to be upset about in people. It seems to change on a whim.

You start with facts about Hammon and end with speculation.

This is a good combination of "whataboutism" and obfuscation. It's the old "she's no angel" tactic. You're also implying that Portlanders regard accused rapists and Christians as on a par, which subscribes to an absurd right-wing caricature of liberals.

I’m so confused at what I’m supposed to be upset about in people. It seems to change on a whim.
The good news is, it's not about you.
