I admire your optimism, but I’m afraid you’ll end up sorely disappointed. Cronin has absolutely no leverage here. Even if he has the balls to demand a high level return and holds his ground when that doesn’t happen (not likely he does) he’ll get ruthlessly hammered every day that passes for holding Dame hostage after all the years he was loyal to the organization. Not sure Joe is built for that kind of pressure.

If the only deals available today involve Portland getting fleeced, I say don’t pull the trigger. Nothing against Dame. He’ll always be my favorite Blazer, his request to go somewhere else doesn’t change that. BUT, he should understand this is a business. He signed a contract to be here and he’s the biggest asset the organization has. To hand him over now for a bag of peanuts because he wants to go elsewhere would be bad business. So bad it could set us back 5 years or longer.

I hope I’m wrong about Joe. I hope he refuses to let Dame walk for nothing in return, even if that means Dame decides to hold out. Something about how Miami expects to take advantage of the situation is maddening. Why should they be gifted a top 75 future HOFer for Tyler Herro and some scraps? I’d rather stand pat and live with the daily distractions of where’s he going to end up. Not a pleasant thought but better than bending over imo.
The other side of it is Pat Riley is one of the best GMs, one of the best trade makers..so there's a high probability he bends Cronin over.

I truly think if we can pull off a solid return this will springboard us forward, but the opposite is also true. Given our recent history its hard to be optimistic but I'm trying.

I've seen 20+ proposals. None of which have less than 1 first round pick, so I'm unsure what proposal you're talking about.

If you haven't seen proposals with more than 1 first round pick, I can send them to you. I'm guessing you have though.
miami picks are pointless.

we gave up a first for Grant that became Duren. The proposals for Dame from MIA are less than that.
And this is why it annoys the fuck out of me that we pushed Dame out.

If we never really intended on building a winner around Dame, we should've used our "assets" much differently and blew it up last year.

I guess Portland is called Rip City for a reason.

I don't believe this is accurate. Duren was acquired by using the Bucks future first and 4 other picks.

Joe himself benefits from Dame leaving. He now has clean slate. An empty canvas. His career as a "young" GM is just getting started, was handed a clusterfuck roster, did his best to unfuck it but unfortunately underestimated the time it would take. If he trades Dame for a bag of chips, he suffers. He has all the motivation to get a great return or wait.

miami picks are pointless.

I'm not sure what that means, but it appears you are upset and have decided you will not be happy regardless of what happens.

It's a tough day.

It is yeah. I think he means that the Miami picks will be low because Miami will be very good with Dame.

miami picks where they will land at 29/30 every year are pointless. and swaps would be even less than useful because we will not have a worse position than them ever.

they don't ever get bad enough to tank or land at a draft position where we might get talent that's worthwhile.

then you're annoyed for no reason. Dame wanted out. He knew that by demanding a trade for vets, Blazers would be offered pennies on the dollar, and he knew we wouldn't do that.

the first Miami pick available is in 2028....5 years from now. Dame will be 38, Butler 39

so the 2028 & 2030 Miami picks might be good. But that's a damn long time from now

I really wanted their 2026 pick. It's annoying that they didn't get OKC to clear up the protections.

I'm unaware of what picks Portland will be getting back and where they will be located in the draft. Probably best to cross that bridge when a trade happens. No point in getting worked up over something that may not happen.

Oh gotcha. They'd be useful if we have to shore up needs for a team ready to make big moves. Imagine prime Scoot and Sharpe getting whatever lotto pick we get from Miami. It'd have to be unprotected to be worthwhile but wow that'd be a nice bonus. I can see preferring picks for sooner though.

I can't see a reason for OKC to give up that 2026 unprotected pick. Maybe Miami could send a 2nd and get OKC to release the 2025 pick, which would allow Portland to get the 2024 pick. But that could be the last pick of next year's 1st round. Not much value
