there is more than enough blame to go around. No one political ideology is innocent from government waste or fraud.

yknow it

the perfect storm

labor unions

public unions

social engeneering

white flight

down sizing work force

consumer opinions

auto makers attempt to produce asian style cars

government regulation

and on and on

Just imagine how much of a bailout GM would have needed if they made their cars out of pennies and nickles.

Imagine how cool a car would look with a body of purely pennies?

Have you seen floors that people make out of pennies?

yes I have. I totally would do that. I think it's very creative AND a good use of $.

I've seen floors and tables made solely out of 2x4 ends (with nice wood, not like crap 2x4s). Really looked cool.

Mrs HCP should make a rubber quilt out of all the condoms we've left there over the years.

replace mexicans with white trash I guess then.

Black neighborhoods are not up for gentrifying, hence, hipsters won't touch them until there is black flight starting and rents/property values start going up. They are still too dangerous for the "kill whitey" phenomenom.

Did you learn this info at one of your hipster meetings?

I gotta shake my head at some of your takes on here. So wrong and so stupid.

Just the thread on here about what neighborhood is best here in Portland got me to thinking about stuff. EVERY neighborhood in Portland is nicer and better off than Detroit! That place used to be the capital if the booming auto industry...... Now it's no different than a third world country in Latin America or Africa.

I welded a nickel on top of each lifeline stanchion as it fits right in a 1" ss tube.
Much cheaper than getting Stainless steel punched out.

Only a liberal would have the government subsidize the construction of their boat.

The irony that a link that was broken is your proof that the bailout cost more than AT MINIMUM the 1.2 trillion spent on the Navy between just 92 and 2004.

Not counting 76-91 and 2005 through 2013.

And the reason I bring up 92-2004 is because A: the website I went to only went up to 2004 and B: I got tired of calculating it up to that point and figured that anyone with an ounce of sense would see that if in just 12 years the US Navy budget grossed 1.2 TRILLION dollars, it would have been far greater than the amount spent on the Bailouts. Even if doubled.

Son don't confuse buying ships with driving ships.

If I asked you how much you spent on your car, you wouldn't tell me how fucking expensive gasoline is! Or would you?

Please don't turn this actual quality thread into a democrat vs republican thing. Theres more to it than that.

Name one major U.S. city run by Repubs for decades where anything similar has happened?

You may not want to hear it, but as they say, elections have consequences.

Bottom line Dems can't handle finances. In fact, they are quite insane about it.

Yeah, and it's because the Dems and the unions stole all of the money and then left the city for ruins. Sorry to smack you in the face with reality, HCP, but read up on it.

Considering there aren't any other major cities that are this bad off, I don't think you can make that comparison. And if that were the case, what is the reason blue states are wealthier than red states? I'm not saying it's the opposite, just that there are so many factors that go into a situation like this that your simple extrapolation can't be relied on.

Don't get me wrong, I do think that corruption in local government and some poorly executed policy was partly to blame, but it's just part of the picture. Just like the crappy governance is only partly to blame in Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama and Tennessee for their high poverty levels.

Yeah, I wanna live in the poor ass deep south where Republican's have ruled the roost for years and years. Cotton picken frickin Republicans.

If I said that it cost more to buy a car than it does a house, I wouldn't act like someone asking me to prove it was crazy.

I say this because what you said, and how you said it, did not isolate the cost of ships as the main draw of your argument.

You said "Imagine this. Barrack Obama spent more money rescuing GM and Chrysler than the previous 10 President spent on the United States Navy, including all of the Nimitz class carriers.
But it hasn't meant a damn thing to the City of Detroit.".

And if you meant something about the TOTAL cost of ships from the 10 Presidents, you really worded it poorly. And probably should've said "you know what? I worded that poorly. What I MEANT to say was.."

And even if you did word it poorly, it's such a poor analogy that it makes no sense to bring it up as if it was a valid point.

A better point would be something like the "amount of the bailout is actually less than the cost of the Afghanistan War".

It would be much easier to just admit you worded it poorly, or got caught up in a hyperbole, or didn't actually look up what you said (instead of calling me 'son'...which is a direct sign of disrespect, something I haven't done towards you).

$700B TARP + $800B emergency stimulus = $1.5T.

While I made the mistake of saying "bailout", I was referring to the stipulation of it being $ that Obama gave GM and Chrysler, and that money being more than the amount 10 presidents have spent on the Navy.

And the 1.2 trillion I gave was just 92-2004, and didn't include what....23 years worth of Naval budgets?

$1.5T is a lot of money. Enough to pay social security benefits for 2 years. And social security is a huge part of govt. spending
