Every team can loose big against another team this been happening for centuries this happen to Boston in the Larry bird teams and has happened to Lakers team with Magic on the team. We are improving due is not how we are winning against these teams before is how much we are winning by against these teams. Yes we barely beat the Lakers the other night majority of the teams in the NBA don't play well the 1st home game after long time on the road but we figure how to win that game in the middle season we probably would have lost that game. Now this winning right now help Stotts remain coach sure it's does because remember the ownership was concerned about the defense this team was playing and what are we doing better with pretty healthy roster we are playing better is defense. If we keep the 6th seed and not get in playing games I will my prediction for Stotts remaining the coach of the Blazers 40 percent.

Since the Blazers' starting lineup has included Jusuf Nurkic and Norman Powell (24 games), Portland is 16th in defense, 2nd in offense and 5th in net rating. The only teams with better net rating: Jazz, Clippers, 76ers and Knicks.

wow....can the return of Nurk, CJ and the addition of Powell have such an impact on the team?

Some thought it was obvious... others thought it was impossible. Talent matters!

Stotts, in his ninth season with the Blazers, was asked before the team’s game Saturday night against San Antonio how he is handling the rumblings regarding his job security.
“I don’t know, I’m just coaching the team,” Stotts said.
When asked if he thought he must get the team to a certain level in order to keep his job, Stotts responded with the same line: “I’m just coaching the team.”
“Every NBA season has ups and downs,” Stotts said following Wednesday’s win at Cleveland. “I can’t remember a season that was smooth sailing all of the time. ... I look at this season so far with CJ missing 25 games and Nurkic missing 35, riding the tides of the highs and lows, that’s just part of the NBA. Every team goes through it and this year is no different.”
Lillard seems to be still strongly supporting Stotts: “We’re NBA players,” Lillard said. “I think you have coaches for a reason. I think our staff, our assistant coaches, Terry, I think they do a great job at preparing us to go out there and get ready for games with knowing players’ tendencies, knowing what sets they like to run, what they’ve done in the last five, six games. Knowing who’s playing well on each team. Knowing what they hurt us with the previous time we played them and the things that we had success with against them.”

He's correct in that its is the time of year when the coach talk heats up. I bet their a numerous coaches in the hot seat but remember success in the playoffs and especially winning it all buys any coach a few extra years.

Some thought it was obvious... others thought it was impossible. Talent matters!
I don't think you'll find one single person that says talent doesnt matter.

Terry is a coach I've learned to respect and appreciate....the internet shit stirring sticks are the last thing he's worried about. People who think they're going to rattle him are just wanting someone other than themselves to be rattled.....I hope he's here another 10 years .....given the risks everyone has taken on to continue playing sports over last year I think asking for a competent, likeable coach who is again making the playoffs to be fired is just boredom fueled panic. Don't buy into the hype....we are lucky to have the locker room and culture we have. 40 million people lost jobs this year.....there's some bad karma attached to asking for people to be fired these days....chill out fans....we're heading in the right direction at the right time....Go Blazers! I really like the guy.Listened to Wheels interview Jaynes last night...Jaynes thinks Terry will be gone...Wheels doesn't seem to although he didn't say that word for word.

Excellent post. Completely agree.

You agree that he should be coach for another 10 years?
Yeah, if we're considering Nate McMillan as a replacement, I'll take Terry Stotts for another 10 years.

If we think we have the next great coach to replace Stotts with I'm ok with making that move. I'm not ok with ditching Stotts to hire a retread with a similar resume as Stotts.

You guys have really bought into being mediocre for Dame's entire career, eh? You're completely fine with getting bounced in the first round year after year? 10 more years of Stotts would completely kill my interest in the team.

If 20 years of Cheeks, Nate, and Stotts haven't killed your interest, I hate to break it to you, but you're not going anywhere!

What can I say... I'm an optimist. I keep thinking that the next mediocre guy will be different.

With that said, I remember saying NINE YEARS AGO that I thought Stotts was fine for a while, but that he wouldn't get us to the next tier. That statement is as true today as it was nine years ago.

I saw that tweet and I'm still skeptical about the numbers

16th in defense for 24 games, more than 1/3 of the season. Yet, the Blazers are still 29th in the league. There have been 33 games since the all-star break when Portland had a defensive rating of 116.4. Yet, while they ranked 16th in the league in rating for 75% of the games since the break, they have only shifted their defense 0.5 points better...???

Blazers were only 13-11 over those 24 games as well so they underachieved in wins based upon net differential

What makes you think we'd get a better coach?

You could randomly throw a dart at a board of coaches in the NBA and find a better coach than Terry Stotts.
Like Cheeks? Nate McMillan? Sorry, if we're not getting an almost certain upgrade it's not worth it to me. Change for the sake of change doesn't usually work out well.

Mo Cheeks and Nate McMillan would do basically the exact same thing that Stotts is doing.

It didnt seem correct to me but I haven't research it. I thought maybe he did so?

Stotts is like the guy a girl is juuuuust about to break up with because she knows he's not right for her, but then does something and saves the relationship. Over and over. She's probably too good looking for him and has tons of other options, she knows it, he knows it, but right when she is about to drop the hammer, he buys her flowers.

Isn't that what you're trying to avoid?

Exactly. I'm not sure why people keep saying "we could go back to the Cheeks or McMillan eras."

To me, those are the same. Mediocre teams that never went anywhere. So why the hell would you want to keep a dude that we clearly can go get whenever we want because we seem to be so good at finding them.

One of my best friends from high school started dating a dude in college that she admitted to me she didn't love. She kept wanting to break up with him, but never did. At one point they were long distance dating and she cheated on him. Still, they ended up getting married because they had been together so long that it just ended up happening. To me, that's sad as fuck.

Great. And I like Stotts better than both. We have better chemistry and culture with Stotts.

I'd rather keep what we've got if we're just getting another Mo or Nate.

I've said if we're getting a near guaranteed better coach I'd be open to it. Otherwise I'd prefer to stick with what we have.

So make the case that this next guy/gal is the next big time coach. Swing for the fences or don't swing.

You don't know who the next big time coach will be. Nobody knew Greg Popovich or Phil Jackson would be the multiple championship winners that they ended up being. Sometimes you have to roll the dice to find the next big time coach. But we won't do that because we keep hiring shitty retread coaches that weren't successful before and haven't been successful with our team either.

PJ
Dunleavy
Cheeks
McMillan
Stotts

It's a storybook of mediocrity.
