Tell the players you don’t want anymore that they can transfer or have their scholarship pulled

Is that even..... legal???

it is legal, kind of, in a certain circumstance. When a new head coach is hired, an NCAA rule says he has 18 months to 'restructure the scholarship allotment'....or words to that effect. The power-5 conferences reached an agreement to make scholarships a 4 year deal, but apparently that is a an agreement subordinate the 18 month rule

prior to the latest transfer, the Ducks were at 90 scholarships; so now, 91. There's another transfer window in the spring too and that's has been a very active window the last 2 or 3 years

it is also apparently legal....'apparently'....to remove a player from scholarship but award him an NIL package that offsets the loss of a scholarship and other costs. I think we will start to hear about that becoming common

From my understanding during the 18 month window that a new coach can has available to restructure the roster, they can also take guys off the team but allow them to keep going to school on a full ride honoring the 4 year terms of the scholarship they signed.

The window for players entering the transfer portal closed mid-January but the next window opens in May. Guys who're going to enter that next portal might announce they're transferring prior to that, but they won't actually be in it until it opens.

The inbalance between defensive and offensive scholarship players is wild.
From my count they've lost 12 offensive guys to the portal and 10 defensive. Conversely they've gained 4 offensive guys from the portal and 6 defensive. For the incoming 2023 class they add 12 on O and 16 on D.

Of course many more guys will be entering the portal in May and they may be adding to the 2023 class on the 2nd signing day February 1st. Relaying reports that they had a great in home last weekend with Nycholes Harbor (who recently ran the 5th fastest HS 200 meter dash ever) that included Track Coach Jerry Schumacher as well as Lanning and Co. from the football side.

I believe the scholarship distribution is the 36 on offense and 52 on defense range at the moment (plus 3 special teams). Obviously players will have to leave. Though you really don't want to be under 40 scholarship players on either side if you can help it.

at this point in time, I believe there are 38 on offense if you assign kickers & long snappers to offense and punters to defense. That might seem unbalanced but there may be some mitigating factors

one is the head coach and his experience...that being that successful SEC teams tend to have at least 55% of their slots devoted to defense. I also remember reading a study from 3 or 4 years ago that concluded that a majority of injuries and missed games occurred on the defensive side of the ball, at least it did on the NCAA level. Don't know about the NFL. IIRC, the most common defensive injuries were neck & shoulder; and there were more concussions on defense as well. I guess logically that makes sense

anyway, it terms of depth it probably makes sense to play a numbers game favoring defense. That side of the ball was certainly the weaker side for the Ducks, and Lanning certainly seems to be overloading the DLine and Edge....which is the strength of the defense and a common focus in the SEC

the Ducks are still hoping for commitments from Nycholas Harbor and Roderick Pleasant and both players have said they prefer offense. And both players are wanting to participate in T&F. It's doubtful the Ducks can land both; but they may very well sign one, and he's probably be offense

I think there will be a lot of transition in the spring transfer portal

Probably went down to watch Dante and ended up seeing Bittle instead.

Ware is/was the highest projected prospect in the game, but he's on Altman's shit list and still only played 10 minutes despite Dante being out. Billups probably likes Da Silva better than any of them.

Regardless, I'm guessing he was just down to support his team given that they have a few days off.

That might mean either Altman has given up on him or he has already told them he'll be transferring. I wouldn't want to be an NCAA coach right now.

Altman has been pretty blunt about it:

While meeting with reporters on Tuesday, Altman was asked about Ware’s effort and lack of consistent production through the first 20 games of the season. During Oregon’s loss at Stanford last Saturday, Ware played a season-low six minutes and did not take a shot.

“We’ve had a lot of conversations,” Altman said. “They haven’t gone as well and haven’t been as constructive as we want them to be. I was disappointed in his effort. I let him know that. He’s gonna have to make some adjustments or I’ve got to make some decisions. His time has been reduced. That doesn’t help us, because he is talented.”

This isn’t the first time this season that Altman has publicly criticized Ware’s effort. Following Oregon’s home win over Oregon State on Dec. 31, Altman paid a backhanded compliment to the freshman, noting that Ware had played with energy in that game and “at least acted like he wanted to be here tonight.”

Since that moment, though, Ware has not played more than 15 minutes in a single game.

“He hasn’t blocked any shots lately. He hasn’t gotten any hands on balls,” Altman said. “He’s not using that length. We’ve still got to try to put the best team out there that gives us the best chance.

“If he’s playing hard, that helps us. But if he’s not, that hurts us.”

those are pretty harsh evaluations coming from a HC

Altman said last week that he and Ware had discussions about what it would take for him to play more and they didn't end up being as constructive as he had hoped. Certainly not a good sign for Ware being at Oregon next year (I don't think they ever thought he'd be at Oregon 2 years), but it also plays into the "Ware is lazy" "Ware lacks a motor" narrative he had coming out of high school. This could certainly scare off an NBA team come draft day.

Nycole Harbors is in Eugene right now and you guys don’t even care

Rivals national guys are now predicting Harbor to UO, we'll know tomorrow around 10 AM. The buzz is that while on his Official Visit over last weekend, Uncle Phil stopped by to help welcome him to Track Town. I'm reading that if Nycholes goes to UO, it's expected his primary sport focus will at least initially be track.

And if, while pursuing his running career, he happens to get the inclination to tackle people, there will be people around who will gladly accommodate that.

Works for me.

From what I'm reading his real hope is to make the Olympics as a Sprinter in 2024. If so, he'll have to hone his body towards leaner (220-225 lbs) which would make the WR/TE projection for football more likely. However, he has also stated that he feels his best position for an NFL career is DE where he absolutely wrecked shop in HS. That would require him to bulk up considerably... he self reported to playing his Senior year at 238 lbs. Depending on how the Sprinting works out, you may get your wish at the tail end of his college career.

Oh baby! It’s coming down to the nitty gritty! Would be huge get

Maybe they're just trying to build up some drama, but the national rivals guys are saying speedster DB Rodrick Pleasant to Oregon is looking more likely. His announcement is scheduled for 10:30 this morning. Below is a link containing the fastest HS 100M times in 2022 with Pleasant at 10.14 & Harbor at 10.22

On the Womp Waah side of predictions, the main insider at the Oregon rivals site predicts the Ducks lose out on both... we shall see soon enough
