Looks like RB Byron Cardwell is hitting the transfer portal also.
I read a rivals insider saying that Oregon is likely to lose 10-15 guys to the portal this year, so more are coming. I think thats just the way it's going to work as kids look to maximize their opportunities. A look back at the brief history of it shows that Oregon has gained more then it's lost though, including the two RBs who took the vast majority of snaps this season.

The portal giveth and the portal taketh away.
Nix, their top 2 RBs, 2nd best WR, top CB & many depth guys were portal giveths for this season alone. Can anyone come up with anything similar from the taketh column? Even historically compiling, I can't come up with anything remotely comparable.

I wonder what the biggest transfer out class has been. Just seems like a lot at least in the past couple weeks. You're way more dialed in to these things than I am, so I'll take my silly play on words and beaver tail out of this thread and go naw on some wood.

Chip Long the former OC for Georgia tech possibly coming to Eugene?

Biggest for the Ducks or anyone? I don't have numbers to back this up, but the 2020 Covid year not counting against player eligibility has resulted in more guys competing for spots and (I suspect) a ripple effect of more transfers for the following years. I know all the movement wears on some fans, but I like that the athletes have options to pursue their dreams.

Some good speculation from rivals insiders... it appears that the verbals in Oregon's 2023 class are remaining solid despite OC Dillingham's departure. We shall see as the early window where most guys commit is three weeks away.

so far, the Ducks who have announced intention to enter the portal, have mostly been expected.

* Seven McGee was in the portal a year ago and withdrew. He just couldn't break into the rotation. He's a tweener: too small for a RB and too slow for a WR. Sean Dollars is quite a bit better. That he's back in the portal is no surprise at all

* Cardwell was inevitable and completely expected. His parents, mostly his mom, have been pushing him out for a while. He couldn't get healthy, and even when he did, he was not as talented as the RB's ahead of him. For a flawed, upright RB he became rally overrated among part of the fan base. Very unlikely he'll be missed

* Dont'e Thornton has been posting cryptic tweets hinting at transfer for months. So far, he's just another one of those guys who flashes a lot of potential without delivering. He had 25% of his receptions and 40% of his receiving yards in one game. 17 receptions, 360 yards, 1 TD; not exactly great numbers. He's the only transfer so far, that will possibly be missed, and it wouldn't take much of a WR transferring in to offset Thornton's loss

* it was inevitable that a QB would enter the portal. Butterfield got his name in first. Considering how shaky Ty Thompson looked, that Butterfield couldn't climb above Thompson in the rotation says a lot about Butterfield and not much of it is good. No loss, and the double-factor of NIL and the transfer portal means that a lot of QB's will be moving every off-season

what could happen is that Ty Thompson will enter the portal too; and Bo Nix decides to go to the NFL and not risk injury in a meaningless bowl game. Leaving the Ducks with Jake Van Dyne & Marcus Sanders as their QB's....yikes! Braxton Burmeister part 2

6 months ago, it seemed inevitable that Bo Nix was a one-and-done. That still may be the case as it's unlikely he'll improve his draft status by returning to Oregon for another year. But he's had a couple of interviews lately where he's actually hinted that coming back for one more year isn't far-fetched, at all. I've seen some 'semi-informed' speculation that Nix got around 800K in NIL this year and the Ducks are working on a package that's bigger than that for next season plus a very attractive 'insurance-against-injury' policy

my hunch is that the losses along the OLine and the departure of Dillingham will be hard to overcome in terms of getting Nix to come back. I doubt he wants to spend a 5th year running for his life again like he did for 3 seasons at Auburn, although I don't think the OLine will be closes to Auburn bad, especially if Klemm stays

Lanning really needs to hit another home run in his hire of the next OC. That would very likely lock in Dante Moore and Jurrion Dickey. Maybe just as important is keeping Kenyon Saddiq and Dante Dowdell locked in. And it might actually be a factor for Nix. That hire needs to happen sooner rather than later too

taken yesterday...

I'm reading that they aren't expected to lose any more coaches but one of their better commits, CB Caleb Presley of Seattle is likely to flip to UW

Screw Caleb Presley he sucked anyways…

Recruiting against Deion Sanders in the Pac 12 is going to be a nightmare. Book it

not if Colorado doesn't commit to, and invest in, substantial NIL. So far, they have been like Cal/Stanford in that regard. The combo of NIL and the transfer portal has created a new-world-order in power-5 football. If a school is not fully engaged in NIL at a competitive level, they are going to struggle to compete against the major programs.

Deion's likely got enough contacts of his own that he'll be able to drum up his own NIL boosters if the Uni doesn't.

Why wouldn’t schools commit to NILs? They already pay millions for facilities and coaching staffs

it's not official yet but it looks like Lanning is hiring Will Stein, of UTSA, as his new OC. Looks like a clone of Kenny Dillingham.

he's 33 and was a QB at Louisville; has lots of connections in Texas. Looks like a really good hire if you use Dillingham as the gauge

if Bo Nix doesn't come back next season, keep the name of Hudson Card in mind. A QB for Texas who's in the transfer portal; Stein coached him in high school

*********************************************************************

by the way, seems to be a lot of smoke behind the notion that the Ducks who have entered the transfer portal so far are being 'processed' by the coaching staff; in effect they have been told that there would be no playing time for them next season. Thornton is the only exception to that and he has some family issues

Justin Flowe has entered the portal. Not really a significant loss considering he's been a massive disappointment as a 5-star LB

Cristobal certainly brought in a lot of 4-star and 5-star busts

Lanning wants speed, speed, and more speed. You have to be able to drop into coverage when needed. Flowe could not

that, and the massive failure by the defense this season will compel the Ducks to look to the portal. Need have space for the recruiting class + transfers. They got Nix, Irving, Whittington, and Cota from the portal this season and those guys helped transform the offense. The defense brought in Gonzalez, Jordan Riley, and Casey Rogers. Rogers and Riley came on strong toward the end of the season, but Gonzo is going to the NFL

Huskies qb coming back

well, right now there's a decent chance that Nix will come back. Lanning said that Nix wants to play in the bowl game. If he's determined to go the NFL draft in 6 months, playing in that bowl game is a big risk. On the other hand, if he's thinking of returning for another season...

Nix is projected for the 5th round. That's not an attractive draft slot. The salary starts at around 650K with a 4 year contract. But, unlike the NBA, not all of that is guaranteed. In fact, only the signing bonus is guaranteed, and that might be in the 175K range

if the Ducks were to guarantee Nix 700K-900K in NIL, along with a solid insurance-against-injury policy, hee'd likely find that pretty attractive, especially considering that the 2024 QB draft class is projected to be quite a bit weaker than this one (there's a rumor that Nix got well more than 500K in NIL this year)

if Penix is coming back, he probably got a good NIL deal, and Penix is projected as a 3rd-4th round pick

by the way, this was the first official' day of the transfer portal and by noon more than 1000 players had entered the portal

here's the video:

Yeah I thought about that scenario with Bo too. Didn't Penix have a couple of severe injuries at Indiana? NIL can really change a players strategy, I guess.
