There was a spirited discussion on "Talkin' Ball" Wednesday night about Mo Williams and his value to the Trail Blazers. It's what "Talkin' Ball" is all about and why we love the show.

I made the case that Williams' advanced stats did not indicate that he has great value as Portland's prime off-the-bench player. Let me make it clear that I believe Williams all season has been forced into a role that's not best for him. He's really not a point guard, even though that's been his prime position with Portland. He's much more a shooting guard. But the Blazers have no choice but to play him -- they don't, at this point, have anyone better.

The case was made for him on the show Wednesday that his best attribute is "getting his own shot" -- which is probably true. But that attribute is also what detracts from his talents as a point guard. Williams gets his own shot a lot better than he gets shots for anyone else.

I mentioned advanced stats on the show but did not have them handy at the time -- and frankly, stats on TV aren't necessarily enthralling programming.

But if you're interested, I'm here to tell you that Williams' numbers are not good. In fact, I think you might be surprised by what they show.

There are several websites that track teams' production with their individual players on and off the court. On 82games.com, which hasn't been updated since Jan. 5, you will notice that Williams' net production on the court is minus-5.5 -- even though, much more than any other Portland reserve, he quite often is playing with a lot of the team's starters. That's not horrible -- there are five players on the team with worse numbers in that category. But the money stat for Williams is how the team plays when he's NOT on the court.

When Williams is off the court, the Blazers are plus-9.6 -- which happens to be the highest number for any player on the entire roster. In other words, there's no one on the team who has a bigger positive Blazer impact by NOT playing than Williams.

The stats at NBA.com's media site are more detailed than what is available to the public so I'm not able to provide a link here. But as of Thursday morning, Williams' net off-the-court rating -- a combination of his offense and defense -- is the highest on the team. Again, those stats say there is no player on the roster the team plays better WITHOUT than Williams. He has a bigger positive impact on the game for the Blazers when he's off the court than anyone else on the team!

Portland is just five games away from the halfway point of the season so these numbers have a big enough sample size that they have merit. You may choose to not put much stock in such things, trusting your eyes to tell you the story of players' worth. That's fine. But to ignore meaningful advanced stats when evaluating players for potential trades and roster decisions would be risky, at best.

Williams said Wednesday he is certain he's going to opt out of his Portland contract at the end of the season. This might make him a desirable trade piece. My take on that is it's not a silly idea to explore the idea of trading him.

Yes, the Trail Blazers have won 75 percent of their games to date. But the bench hasn't had a lot to do with that -- and Williams is a part of that group.

Mo replied to Jaynes on twitter with this -

Mo Williams ‏@mowilliams This is comedy. The only stat I care about is being the best in the west. Enjoy the ride and stop trying to find a negative in every situation. Lol, you name 4 back-up PGs better than me.....don't worry, I'll wait.

And Dwight answered back -

Dwight Jaynes ‏@dwightjaynes
@mowilliams Manu Ginobili, Reggie Jackson, Ramon Sessions, Andre miller, Darren Collison, Jarret Jack, Shaun Livingston, Evans... No mo room

Shaun Livingston? Sessions? Evans? Yeah. Hes stretching there. Ginobili and Jackson, yes... Miller isn't even playing that much... though he is better. Still..

"...no mo room." LOL Kinda clever.

If our team had any of those guys Dwight mentioned I'm sure we would have a million threads on how terrible he is too.

So Jaynes thinks he's the 9th best backup PG in the league? So 21 teams have a worse option and 8 have a better one. Dwight thinks we have a better option than 70% of the league. Considering we were at 0% last year I'm happy with it. I'd rank Mo higher than Dwight but overall I think Mo is right, this is Dwight trying to make a negative out of something he doesn't even agree with himself.

How many teams have a worse starter at PG today than Mo Williams? I'd say Chicago, New York, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Sacramento, Detroit, Boston, LA Lakers, New Orleans, Brooklyn, LA Clippers. So that's 11 teams.

Mo is a better option than 36% of players starting at PG for NBA teams today.

Here's the thing: all of them are better than Bad Mo, but only a couple are better than Good Mo. But it's rolling the dice every night that makes people weigh his risk/reward proposition.

Understandable. However, average mo is better than most of those on an average game.

I think Jack was the only pg available this summer out of the ones Jaynes mentioned. Considering how good the team chemistry is Olshey hit a home run getting Mo.

Ginobili and Evans aren't PGs unless Batum is truly the starting PG.

I knew Jason Kidd was struggling as a coach but playing Reggie Evans at PG is an odd strategy. Does playing all those years of PG give Kidd an out of the box way of recognizing those skills? I'll have to tune into some Nets game I can't wait to see that awkward looking big man dribbling the ball up the court!

Good point... one that Jaynes obviously isnt smart enough to consider.

head to head we've beaten about every team with those "elite backup pt guards" anyway so Jaynes is just blowing steam out of his ears as far as I'm concerned. How he ever became a media figure is beyond me. This is Jaynes way of getting his name in a headline and nothing more

Ok, I got a chuckle and I am sure you know but:

We all bitch at Mo for chucking, but looking at this more rationally, I'd rather Mo shoot than Joel/TRob/etc. He's volatile for sure and he misses open guys way too often, but he brings a change of pace. Kinda stupid to call him out when we're doing so well.

Not sure if serious or not but if so I assume he meant Tyreke Evans.

Hey, that's your 15,000th post!

You get rep for that! And a weekend night with Mrs HCP.

Yeah agreed! I think what Mo often does is dribble down the court and look for an easy scoring opportunity or a mismatch. When he sees those he passes the ball. A third of the time there isn't one of those great opportunities available, so he ends up shooting a mediocre shot. No we don't want him to shoot those every possession but when time is running off the shot clock its great that he can always find at least an acceptable attempt. With him shooting it also means we have two big men available to crash the boards for offensive rebounds. If instead Mo passed it to Freeland we will will end up with more terrible looks and the big men won't be in as good of position to crash the boards.

They are both right. Mo is the most expendable and our bench has been lame. However, we don't need to make a move unless something awesome comes up. I think with Meyers looking better and TRob getting hyped up, not to mention CJ, and we are looking a lot better in that area. Mo is a good hot and cold guy, seems he can shoot you in and out of games, but he has done a good job this year of not getting carried away and shooting us out of the games and he's been the hero once or twice. Mo deserves some respect.

Considering how great our starters have been Mo does not have to be the best back up PG in the league.

To that a lot of what Jaynes wrote is truthful. Mo has been wildly inconsistent this year and the numbers do suggest the team does play better with him not on the court. For my money Reggie Jackson, Tyreke Evans, and Jarret Jack are a given; however, considering Evans is paid over 10 million a year including him in the comparison seems petty. Sessions is acceptable as well.

But ultimately his no mo room comment trumps everything.
