So what is the best case scenario for the blazers regarding the warriors pick? What needs to happen to GSW?

I heard plenty about Scoot.
Reading between the lines but not that much — (1) Scoot is the starting PG next year, (2) Ant knows it, (3) Sharpe is the starting SG, and (4) Ayton starts at center.

IMHO, if there’s a good deal from a team who wants to win in the playoffs, Grant will be traded by February. Otherwise, he’s one starting forward for the “win games and develop.”

I will be a bit surprised if Ant isn’t traded at or near the draft. Thybulle, too.

Agreed. He's done excellent keeping players focused and working hard during this time.

Blazers lack of success is 100% from the lack of talent on the roster, which is solely the GM.

That doesn't mean Billups is an elite coach or anything. But no coach could have done anything meaningfully better with this group, many coaches would've been much worse.
I've never noticed a head coach teach and coach his players at every opportunity throughout every game the way Billups does. I love seeing that, because that's exactly what he should be doing.

So if the warriors make the playoffs, their pick cannot be top 4, so we want GSW to get the 8th seed then
Why not hope they lose now and then don't win the lottery? That would be a better pick than if they get the 8th seed.

You mean get eliminated and get the 5th pick, right? If that's even statistically possible

Yeah... I seem to remember this same statement being made only a few short years ago when the Blazers were making the playoffs every year.
Change just for the sake of change might not be in our best interest.
See if you can find ME making it and then you have a point.

he means a 12th or 13th pick rather than a 17th pick

the notion that Portland was going to get a top4 pick next season was always a pipedream

As of now it's them hitting the lotto this year and next year with us ending up with the second pick in next year's draft...

For this draft though, the best case scenario is that the Kings win against the Pelicans which would move the pick to 13 and one of the Bulls or Hawks beat the Sixers after they lose to the Heat which would push the pick to 12.

If Sacramento loses to NOLA and if Miami also loses two in a row then there will be some coin flips determining the order 12-14 because the Warriors, Kings and Heat had the same regular season record.

Gsw gets #4 this year, sucks again next year, gets picked #2, which we then get. Alongside that, we get the #1 pick this year and next year, and come out of these next two drafts with Sarr, Flagg, and Bailey, and then dominate the league for a decade.

Blazers rebuild rivals in Utah call this draft "unique"

He did say there were some good players in the draft. He seems to have more fun talking to the media than Joe. Sounds as if they were hoping for #1 pick to get Durant not Oden that year.

Did you not see improvement from almost every young player? I did. Camara improved over the season
Walker improved alot
Scoot improved alot
Murray improved some as did Rupert.

but they are still just college kids who need a couple season under them. But if you didn't see the defensive grit and improvement in them? I dont know what you are watching.
I said improved as a group. That's different than developing individual skills.

This is where you and I have always disagreed. I don't think he did nothing. I think he failed to do what he said he would do. Does that mean he didn't try? No.

But I guess it just depends on whether you believe that Joe sand bagged to get rid of Dame. And if that's the case, why? What was the ultimate motivation? Put his own stamp on the team?
Not sure, but at some point when his words and actions don't align and his directionless moves don't make sense, I hope you'll also ask "why?".

I think Billups could have learned from Pops. Billups focused on trying to win games all the way through (although his attempts were mis-guided at times) and improving individuals' play (which I think he did a good job of).. Pops focused on building a team identity, teaching a system on defense and offense.. and ensuring that players played within that system. He did such a good job that by the end of the season the team started beating good opponents, even when he himself probably didn't care. Yes, of course he had Wemby, but even without Sochan, Vassel and Keldon Johnson, they kept playing at a high level.
Well said.

Well..... just because a player is a lottery pick doesn't mean that they are going to contribute right away. Sometimes it's just about drafting a player who has the potential to be a star.

Case in point:

Giannis' rookie season

... what does that have to do with Kris Murray lol

Well said.
I guess part of that has to be laid at the feet of Joe Cronin. If he wanted Billups to focus on team building, he should have cleared our some more veterans. It might have been confusing for Billups. Also he could have talked to Billups, strongly suggesting following the Pops model.

My point was closer to "Look at what Joe does, not what he says."

I don't usually disagree with you, but your point is ludicrous. By that logic, every potential draftee is "lottery talent".

The good news is that in Joe's exit interview, he said outright that there are "holes" in the roster, and that it was unbalanced. Good to hear some honesty mixed in with his Rose Garden colored goggles.

The truth, imho, is that it was a wasted year. The reason I think that is mostly because of injuries. Imagine a Sharpe and Scoot backcourt starting alongside Ayton for 70+ games. That would be giving our young players that matter important minutes and growth, regardless of whether we won or not. Instead, we gave our minutes to young players who don't really matter, some of whom won't even be on the team in 3 years.
