The Heat are considering making a run at restricted free agent Greg Oden, league sources said. Oden, who hasn't played in nearly two years after suffering two different knee injuries, has a key doctor's examination this week when he could be cleared to resume contact practices.

Oden has a one-year qualifying offer from the Portland Trail Blazers for $8.9 million on his plate at the moment. The most the Heat could offer is the bulk of the $5 million mid-level exception.

For these reasons, it would seem like an easy choice for Oden if he can return to the floor, which could come as early as January. By making the hefty qualifying offer, the Blazers indicated they have not given up hope even though Oden has only played 82 games since being taken with the No. 1 overall pick in 2007.
...
The Blazers maintain matching rights for Oden but sources say Riley still is interested in making the pitch.

Not even 24 hrs since the Quick release about him being cleared for practices, and this comes out. Conley Sr. is good. (and don't forget, LBJ and Wade were both at the Ohio St. game last week where GO was caught on video limping. They have probably interacted more with Oden in the past few months than any Blazer).

But this might be a good thing if they are the only other team making an offer and it's only for 5 mil. We can easily match that.

If there's one thing I'm sure about, it's that Greg will be a blazer this season. After that I have no idea.

Maybe we could trade him to the Heat for Wade or Bosh. I would do that in a heartbeat.

sort of a joke they even reported this as all the Heat have is the MLE and POR has already offer the QO and they and many other teams would easily offer more that the MLE to Greg, guess it's a slow news day

I fully expect Utah to make an offer that is just high enough to make it uncomfortable for us to resign GO, but we will have to. Revenge for the Wes Matthews and the other qualifying offer (forget the name) we made on their players.

Utah doesn't really need a C. I don't think they're that petty.

The only team I'm concerned of is Indy, especially with KP there.

Paul Millsap is the name you're looking for. And I don't know that they have the ability ($$$) to make that bluff. :dunno:

the trick is going to be getting a team to offer Greg a high enough amount that he'll sign that instead of taking the QO, but low enough that we'll match. If all he gets are MLEs, he'll probably just take the ~9M QO this year, play at whatever level he plays at, and at worst get the MLE next year. Or, close to the max.

One year at the QO is more than he'd get for 2 years (well, approx) with the MLE.

However, the MLE would be more guaranteed money and who knows what will happen between then and now.

they don't have the cap space to make a high offer.

I like that yuyuza1's video identifies Doc Rivers as a former Duke star. His son goes there

Doc of course went to Marquette leading them to a championship game

STOMP

They have a decent amount of cap space and if they waive okur they'll have enough to offer Oden a pretty nice sized contract. I don't think Utah will though, there owners are in a bad situation financially and if we let Oden walk and go to them they might have screwed themselves up for a long time.

storyteller has utah 3 million or so above the cap, if it is around 58 million again

So they're going to waive Okur, and then waste 3 days of money on Oden while waiting for the Blazers to make their decision? At that point, if Utah is dumb enough to do it, I'd probably just let the Jazz have him, since it would weaken a divisional rival for at least this year, and perhaps many others.

utah is going to be fun to watch for the first time in forever with all those young players, they have new jerseys 2012 pick too, if they stink this year, they are gonna be fucking LOADED in a few years...damn

Thats why I don't see them doing it. They don't like us but there not in a position to really screw us yet.

Teams can start talking to players about free agency, etc from 10AM EST today. I wonder if GO will get a call from anyone.

I bet he gets a call from Nate first thing.

Yes, it will be Nate who is acting 1/3 GM. Nate will reassure him they will walk the ball up court to save his knees. Convince him not to go anywhere else that might actually attempt a fast break.

Miami has to be close to the cap. They had to get way below and didn't sign the big three all to MAX deals. Maybe the scenario is they amnesty a player (Mike Miller rumor) to get enough space to make a more than MLE offer.

Miami is at 66, They'd have to amnesty one of their big 3.

Miller will be out with injury for a while. It's possible that they waive him.
