The Blazers are not particularly profitable, so why else would someone maintain ownership? That's right, they have a personal interest in how the team is doing.
Make logic your friend.
Now, let's all have some popcorn and see what I've stirred up.
Having a personal interest is one possible reason, but there are many more... Just to name a few:
1) Size of estate -> PA passed 15 months ago? It takes time to go through an estate and determine what to liquidate and what to keep. Thus far we have only heard of the yacht and the stratolaunch going up for sale. I'm assuming those are two of the 'easiest' things to sell off from a logistics/management standpoint. For the size of the estate, I would expect it would take 4-5 years to liquidate the items Jody doesn't want to keep.
2) Tax planning -> Taxes are a major consideration on the order/sequencing of liquidating the estate. They may choose to hold onto some assets for a while longer for tax purposes.
3) Existing contracts/agreements -> Blazers are locked in Portland until 2023 and have an agreement to play at the Moda Center until 2025. Jody may be holding onto the Blazers until these contracts are closer to expiring, which would give the new owners more options for which they may be willign to pay a small premium for.
Again, just because the Blazers haven't been sold YET, doesn't mean that Jody has any intention of holding onto them long term.
Make logic your friend....
Now these are the things that we know for sure:
1) PA loved the Blazers
2) Jody never really cared for basketball as a sport
3) Jody wants to honor PA and carry on his 'vision'. This may include the Blazers, but it very well might not...
4) Jody attended many games towards the end of the season and playoffs last year. It appeared that she enjoyed the entertainment.
5) Jody attended many games early this season, but seems to have been absent at the more recent games.
6) It's too damn early to have any idea of what will happen with the Blazers ownership. Jody may not even know at this point....
All we can do is wait and see what happens. If Blazers haven't been sold by 2025, then I think the odds of Jody keeping the team long-term are very high. Until that point, it's too early to know for sure.
