He’s horrible defensively. I think we really need to start valuing defense more than offense if we want to take the next step
What about Noah Vonleh as back up 4/5? What are your thoughts on him? Could he be our first big off of the bench or nurk injury insurance on a cheap contract?

Josh Hart could become our Jordan Clarkson. He has 6th Man of the Year potential. I think his defense, attitude, and toughness are a must get.
How do you get him though?

He'll be a RFA, so Pels can match any offer.

Most likely, Portland will only be able to offer the tax-MLE for ~$6M/yr.
Any S&T routes will hard-cap Portland at a maximum payroll of ~$141M. If there is any hope of re-signing Norm, Portland will most likely be over that hard-cap number - meaning the S&T is not an option.

I don't agree that Portland should value defense more than offense. They just need to value defense more than they have which points the finger at Melo, Kanter, and Simons, not to mention the Dame/CJ pairing

Portland's best defensive team was the 2017-18 team and it got swept by the Pels because the Blazer offense stalled. That team needed to value offense more. Yeah, it's a damn game of bop-a-mole

If we are bringing in guys like Hartenstein (WABC) and Hart (average at best defender) what are we even doing? Aim the fuck higher

The Dame / CJ pairing has to be the first fix.

if you want value for CJ - package Nurkic with CJ and a #1 pick and go shopping for a star;

KAT being my first choice

A new GM would be move #2; better ability to round out the roster than Olshey has been able to provide!

Agreed... although it make take doing #2 first to accomplish #1. I've yet to see Neil do anything that has had a significant positive impact on this franchise in his entire time here. There are some small positives, but they are vastly outweighed by a lot of negatives. Probably his best thing has been his ability to get talent in the 2nd round. But those have been marginal players at best.

no I didn’t.
Ariza is a major head case who plays defense like it’s the NFL….and who will always be a Laker in his own mind. Trot out all the advanced stats you want. He didn’t do much if anything to push Portland closer to the top. And he bailed when he could have helped us the most. Maybe if he wasn’t such a fucking tool, his family situation wouldn’t have been an issue. Lastly, he’s on his last legs. Hard pass……

Watch Neil sign Bobby Portis for 169M for 2 years

Man I wonder how many free agents were gonna sign this year. I doubt we’ll jump into the draft. Let’s assume we bring back Powell and DJJ picks up his option. That’s still only 9 players under contract. That means Olshey will have to bring in at least five players.

My prediction - batum for tax MLE
Same. No matter what we do regarding Cj and Powell. Batum would at least be the perfect 6th man and play that Andre iguodala role for us. He can do a bit of everything, literally. I think he would really help with the lack of ball movement with the bench players. Getting rid of Melo and signing him would be be huge

It's going to be VERY hard with only the Tax MLE & vet min contracts to hand out.

It really depends on the moves made. Maybe we trade CJ out and get the player we want for CJ and another to match cap space or get a TPE.

That being said if we re-sign Norm then that will give us eight solid rotation players in Dame, CJ (or someone we get for CJ), Norm, RoCo, Nurk, Ant, Nas and DJJ. Assuming we'd get another rotation player with the taxpayer MLE that's a solid nine man rotation that we could fill out with vet min guys and undrafted free agents.

vets sign for the minimum all the time, I don’t think it’ll be that much of a struggle.

but that’s the same team as last year

If CJ is traded with a bunch of draft capital for a player that actually fits with the roster (and he fucking better be), moving Norm to his actual position, getting more defense and having a good sized forward as our second option would make the team much different than last year. Also the other guys I listed could be traded but as long as those are one for one deals or we even pick up an extra player in the deal we will have those nine rotational spots filled. That was my point... if we re-sign Norm and assuming we don't trade multiple players for one, we'll have nine rotation level players.

Also I personally don't expect Ant and Nas to be the players they were last year, I think they'll be better which will make the team different and some people in here think that Elleby will pop too... I'm not one of them but some people think so.

Im looking forward to watching CJE in summer league. I'm hoping Chauncey will coach there as well. The thing I like about CJ is his length, defensive aptitude, and no fear.
He should get a few more minutes during season but who knows?

When I said that I'm not one of the people that think he's going to pop, I wasn't insinuating that I'm definitively right. There are smart people in here that are sometimes very very optimistic but still smart that think he'll pop like Gary did. So, if they think that then it's a possibility. If he does that would be great.

Shane Larkin should be near the top of Neil’s list.

Seasoned vet overseas, only 28 years old and a career 41% shooter from three in his six years over in Turkey/EuroLeague.

Left handers are unique because they play kind of a different, more crafty style. Maybe our first lefty since Babbitt and Armon Johnson?
