Terry Stotts coached 170 Blazer players I believe...how is that running it back for years? One season he had 19 starting lineups...we've been a revolving roster for almost a decade...what we need is an identity and core that has chemistry

this isn’t really your take is it? Let’s go name all those players and see how many of them were impactful.

Yes…he makes moves around in the margins. Nothing that changes the outcome of the team. Keep in mind…dame is threatening to demand a trade. This off-season is different

This is LITERALLY my only reason for being patient anymore. Because this year IS different.

Maybe Neil's gonna keep Neiling, in which case we have the rest of eternity to hate him. But this should be uncharted territory, so Neil's general inaction should probably not be used as evidence as to why nothing will happen because, as you said, this offseason is different.

And sometimes an overpay is what it takes.
I feel like this happens often on here. People want Neil to pull a rabbit out of a hat for CJ, but what it would ACTUALLY take to pull of a CJ for whoever trade is a price they flinch at.
I would do CJ + DJJ + Simons + a pick or two but I’d try my hardest to keep Little and hope he develops on defense to the point where Ben + Nassir is our starting forwards and Covington can leave or get traded. Matisse is miles ahead of Nassir as a defender but he’s also like 3 years older. I think Nassir will eventually be a much better offensive player. I think Ben + Little has the potential to be better than Ben + Thybulle.

Basically a Dame haul for a player that looked like ass in the playoffs and was thrown under the bus by his own coach and star teammate.
But look at Little through the lens of a different team, and not the few flashes he's shown here. Look at Ant, going into his 4th season in the eyes of a different team, and not the few flashes he's shown here. Simmons is an ALL NBA caliber player and all star at least a tier or two above CJ. You need to add pieces to CJ to land Simmons.

running it back doesn't mean success was achieved....my point is we keep fishing for chemistry and a starting core and it didn't click so they didn't run it back...they tried to tweak it and failed...you can name anybody you want..I'm not into wasting time on that...I got that number from Terry Stott's letter to the franchise when he left...I could probably name them all but that's pointless to my post..in fairness most NBA franchises failed to get a championship over the same stretch...it's not easy to pull off...injuries to OUR impact players sure didn't help the cause

Each year we talk about this same "rational" take. And each year the result is the same. Excuse me if some people are sick of it.
Factually wrong. The poll, right here on s2, said Neil had a great offseason last year.

Realistically, without moving cj this team does not have many options to change radically. You also know that dame will not throw cj under the bus for anything other than a major upgrade, so anything else done must be done on the margins leaving flexibility if an opportunity presents itself.

What else can you move? Dj is not attractive by himself, nurk is underpaid for his worth and roco is properly paid, you are not getting a star for dj + ant/little, so, it is going to be a waiting game hoping something is available or one of the young ones makes a jump. That's where it's at...

wut?

he said "the result is the same". What does a poll of pre-season poster expectations have to do with losing in the first round, again, to an injured Denver team? That was result. The poll was meaningless

Yeah... like Dame.

There was a short window, after Simmons' flameout in the last few games of the Hawks series, when we had a chance of landing Simmons for less than Dame. But Morey wasn't dumb enough for that. Simmons is worth more than CJ, and he knows it, and he's fucking stubborn. So let the Simmons-for-CJ dream die - the sooner you do, the better for your mental health.

Do you think Neil even inquired about Derozan? Considering Zach went there for 7 mil…. I seriously hope we inquired about a sign and trade. he’s not creative

Whole league is waiting on Dame to return from the Olympics because there is a chance he could ask out.

A lot of teams are operating under this assumption or waiting until there is some definitive resolution on Dame before making any big moves.

If he asks out, Portland will send to the highest bidder.

60/40 he stays.

Considering derozan just signed for 28 a year, a swap with Zach doesn't cut it. Adding side pieces is impossible because of the hard cap. Adding CJ is stupid because CJ is better.

I wish I had confidence that I'd agree with Olshey on who that is. I have this horrible feeling that Olshey is going to balls up even a Dame trade.

I'm getting a little confused on the balls metaphors

on one hand, people are gargling Olshey's balls; on the other, Olshey is going balls up. Is that a way to prevent gargling?

I was a fan of Portland before Dame was born...if he wants to leave he should leave..same with every player ever signed here....I want players who want to be here...until people stop eating the market kool aid about Dame I don't believe a fucking word of it....Chauncey and Neil met Dame and told him the plan...after that Dame shut down the rumor mill publicly...that's enough for me
The only thing Dame said publicly is if the team doesn't get better he'll want to go somewhere else but right now he wants to stay and win a chip if the team shows they want that too and said the word urgent or urgency about 20 times. He was asked point blank if the core of this team was good enough to keep him and he flat out said no. Then he was asked if running it back with the same starters but Chauncey coaching them is a big enough change and he said Chauncey could be the best coach ever and the answer would still be no.

Dame does not want out of here. He just wants the FO to show that they want to win even a little bit as bad as he does. If we don't make a move, I think it will make Dame really sad but he'll be true to his word and asked to be moved. The last time someone who wasn't Henry Abbott wrote a story about the time table they said it was their sourced understanding that Dame will give it the first couple of months of the season and if the team isn't competing at a satisfactory level Dame will keep his word and ask for a trade by the deadline.

I'll still be a fan of the team. Even if we tear the whole team down or do something even more senseless and try building around CJ. I'll be a fan when Neil is gone even if it's not for another excruciating 10 years. As a fan, I don't see Dame and think that if he wants traded "oh well". This is the highest character superstar in the league and that we've ever had. This guy isn't about UCLA or Houston before the Portland Trail Blazers and he's not even about Oakland before Portland. That's not rare for us, it's unprecedented with the few superstars we've had. So if Dame is traded it will hurt and I'll probably be upset Olshey didn't do enough for the rest of my life because when it crosses my mind every once in a while I'm still upset that Clyde couldn't win one here and retired a Rocket. It's probably because I'm such a big fan of the team that I want the best, not just to accept some mediocre bullshit.

I think Neil explored Derozan and talked to probably every agent in the game..still is...players choose where they want to play...I wanted Derozan...he wanted Chicago...could be some of these players teenage kids log on here to see what Portland fans are about and then go...hey dad...look at this! Dad says....uh..don't worry,. we're going to Chicago

"Balls up" = "cock up" = "fuck up"

Clear?

This is why it's sometimes GOOD not to have cap space:

I'm so old I remember the "talk ourselves into Kenny Anderson" phase of free agency.

What I'm guessing happened in the meeting with Chauncey and Neil is:

Dame go focus on the Olympics.

Neil told Dame about the types of players he was targeting and would make the roster changes before Dame comes back. (@Mediocre Man alluded to this)

Dame and Neil (and probably Chauncey) re-convene after the Olympics and discuss whether those changes are enough.

If not (and christ, look at who we signed), I hope Dame at least puts some onus on Neil to try and make a move instead of directly asking out now.
