As terrible as Melo/Kanter were last season - I honestly don't think Zeller, Snell & McLemore are an upgrade... So I'd say not improved.

Lateral at best so far, and still a big hole to fill at backup power forward. Faried or Milsap might make it an overall upgrade, but minor at best.

We went after DeRozan

DeRozan garnered interest from several other teams early in free agency, such as Philadelphia, Portland, Phoenix, Golden State, Boston and New York. The Knicks quickly pivoted to splurge on Evan Fournier. For Golden State, acquiring DeRozan would have necessitated a complicated salary-matching sign-and-trade with the Spurs that would have sent out Kelly Oubre. But that framework never gained much traction, sources said.

For a time, there was a belief in league circles that DeRozan would have taken a pay cut for a championship contender on this season's $5.9 million taxpayer mid-level exception. That notion seemed to be confirmed when DeRozan told Fox Sports' Shannon Sharpe on his podcast:

"It's all about winning at this point. Going into my 13th season and seeing all these guys just competing for a championship. At this point, you got to weigh out the opportunity to win a championship kind of more. Especially with the career I've had. I've been fortunate to make a lot of money, but at this point, the ultimate goal is to compete for a championship."

However, DeRozan never truly entertained that mid-level salary figure, sources said. The Bulls were the main franchise to actively pursue an agreement with DeRozan as free agency opened, while the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks prioritized chasing Kyle Lowry. Portland, Phoenix and Philadelphia would have needed to add DeRozan through intricate sign-and-trade scenarios, thus slowing their pursuits.

Not anywhere close to championship level. So does it really matter if we improved or not?

Defensive, yes, Offensive, no.

But, if you consider a full year of Norman's ability to create as a replacement for Melo's scoring and a full year (if he stays healthy) of Nurk rebounding and controlling the paint - the Blazers should be better, at least in the regular season to last year's team.

But, is it anything more than a 2nd round team at best? No.

Melo was terrible almost all the time. Kanter wasn't. He had a terrible series against Denver for sure, but he helped carry Portland to several regular season wins with his rebounding and efficiency. Zeller isn't better than Kanter, even if his defense is better; and over the last 4 seasons, he's missed an average of 27 games a year....now he's coming into the Portland big man curse

there has been no upgrade yet. If Olshey's secret plan was to trade Dame and build a team around CJ, the last two and a half months makes sense.

so where did Neil go on his vacation? appears clear that he's done.
If he is working on a big deal, a deal that will determine the future of the franchise; I expect it will take time. Some times the best way to negotiate is to just wait. I think something will be done before training camp.

Btw NeO is in Vegas they showed him during the game sitting about half way up in the stands watching the game so he is not on vacation he is trying to figure out how to make the team better.

OR to feed into the crazy fan narrative -- He is having a secret meeting with the sixers GM and they are discussing when to pull off the Dame to Philly trade without making NeO look really bad like some foolish fan kind of mentioned a few days ago.

The 1st part is for the sane fan who has not lost there ever loving mind and the 2nd part is to feed the insanity of some fans and this will be the last time I do that before I decide to go OPEN SEASON on the crazy fans and there stupid ass theory's -- so after reading my insane idea maybe you will realize JUST how friggin stupid that sounds. ---

I hope he's having a not so secret meeting with Morey in which he is begging Morey to see reason. CJ is the best fit for what the Sixers need and hopefully Neil isn't so delusional that he doesn't understand that it will take CJ plus other assets to attain Simmons. So hopefully he's talking to Morey and ironing out CJ+ for Simmons who is the only player we seem to have a shot at right now that could be a superstar to pair with Dame.

Fuck Neil, I actually remember shitting on him 3 seasons ago and posters lighting me up for it. He’s worse than a used car salesman now because he knows he can’t or won’t be fired. He isn’t going anywhere until Jody sells and I don’t think she sells until we are past the point of contention with our current roster. I expect to suffer through another 40ish win season, lose in the first round, trade Dame because he demands one, then hear Jody has no interest in owning an NBA franchise and sells the team sometime during the 2022-23 season, then finally new ownership fires Neil. This seems most likely how and when things will happen.

Some of y'all having a meltdown on this. Apparently Neil is actually trying to add talent, but finding few want to come to the Rose City without being overpaid. He's gonna have to make a trade using CJ to really improve the team , plain and simple. I think he will, and it won't be Dame. But players , many that we've had on our wish list, are bypassing our offers to go to lesser teams because they want to get paid. That's fine, but to hammer Neil as if he's not trying, is hate, just to be hating. Hopefully he can pull of a trade that strengthens the team. Looks like the only way now.

we would all have more patience if we weren't on the clock with Dame. And the moves Neil has made so far don't indicate the kind of urgency he should be working with. Maybe you're comfortable with him playing a game of chicken with Dame-- i certainly am not.

If he's giving it his all... it just isn't good enough after treading water for almost a decade, with a fluke run to the WCF that was proven a fluke when we got swept out. The fact is Neil should have been fired a long time ago so he needs to do a lot more than the status quo and he just hasn't so far this off season. You can put that on the location of the franchise but in public Neil has made that an excuse. In what way does that help the problem? This dumbass shouldn't be reinforcing the supposed prejudice that NBA players have against Portland, he should be selling the idea that it's a great place live and play. The reason why he is giving into that narrative is that he's either tired of getting told no (in which case fire his ass) or he likes it as an excuse for the fact that he just can't land quality free agents (again that should get his ass fired).

So it doesn't matter to me if he's trying or not, if we don't get significantly better from the moves he makes this off season and early season, he will have cost us Dame. I wish and hope he's fired before Dame goes but any way you cut it the guy shouldn't still be here. That's not hate, he just hasn't done what it takes to have ten years as the GM of our team.

I would not have any more patience. Ten years basically in the exact same place is just completely unacceptable unless that place is in the Finals every year. So even if Dame hadn't put his cards on the table, I wouldn't be giving Olshey the benefit of the doubt because he threw the guy under the bus that he'd been touting as one of the best coaches in the game for 9 years. That's been his big move this off season and it's not enough. Getting a player to re-sign on a good deal and then filling the bench with a bunch of very mediocre bench players is not enough. He has to make a move or moves that show he isn't going to continue to let this team be mired in making the playoffs just to make an early exit.

theres literally no way he trades cj mccollum unless he gets commitment from dame, its too much of a risk, cause it can happen that dame bolts even if we trade for simmons or siakam and that would mean rebuild

but if we trade dame, we can still remain playoff team for years and like i said, ownership is good with that

i believe neil olsheys strategy lays entirely on if dame is willing to commit to this team long term

I've got to believe the Olympic experience, while ending on a high note, and full of new friendships, showed him what it's like to play on a team with a ball dominant superstar. And i doubt he really enjoyed it that much. He's an Alpha. I don't see him changing that just to get a ring, when ,yes he got the medal but, all the media says (which matters to him) is that Durant won the gold for them. Yes Kevin performed the best offensively, but he also got a ton of shots to stay in rhythm . I don't see Dame going to a team to jock hang to a title. He wants to LEAD a team to the title.

No, it is not. It is his job to improve the team. Obviously Dame is frustrated himself to take it to the media before leaving with Team USA. That interview didn't sound like someone cool with the roster Neil built. Dame talking about us not getting some of the targets we went after didn't make me feel warm and cozy either.

Neil has had 9 years to built a contender. He hasn't. That deserves criticism. Not acknowledging that shows homerism.

They were contending the year Nurk was in Beast Mode. Before the gruesome injury. The additions Neil made at trade deadline, were heralded by the Nat'l Media. Those additions ,Kanter & Hood, paid off. They got to the WCF. In a series, sans Nurk, that they lead in every game a majority of the minutes, only to be unable to finish the Warriors off in each game. If Nurk doesn't get hurt, that team potentially may win it all. That's a contender. So Neil did build a contender. And the Nat'l Media acknowledged as much that year.

We lost a lot of scoring and rebounding, and I don't think the defensive upgrades balance that out.

It's like Neil wants Dame to leave.
