I started on upright. Played 6 years in the Portland Metropolitan Youth Symphony.

I love the upright and fretless...although I play a 5 string fretted electric when I record

That sucks! I studied with Ken Smith Luthier in the early 80s...he made great basses...I made 4 mandolins which also disappeared shortly afterward.
