Gary Trent extension

I’m still wondering how Trent is a proven “3 and D” player.

His defense was flat-out bad in the playoffs but clearly he gives effort and can improve. Let a Klutch-connected GM overpay him.
Wasn't he trying to guard lebron in the playoffs are using that to call him bad defender.

No way Trent is getting more than this.

Gary Trent IS GONNA GET PAID!!!!!

That's fair for White if you project out his bubble play.

We're seeing a shitload of extensions this season because there will be so many teams with capspace in 2021. This bodes terribly for us since now Trent and Collins are some of the best RFAs left on the market, and we know how contracts for RFA's tend to go....

There is a very real chance a team gives 4/80 to Trent if he plays really well this year. It sucks that we were limited in what we were able to offer him, since I think somewhere in the 4/64 range would have got an extension done this season.

Why so? Luke was a lottery pick and averaged about16 points a game. He been in the association a year long than Trent I believe.
He averaged 16 points in 28 games

He averaged 16 points in 28 games
Very similar stats the two of them. This season will be telling for both I would guess.
I hope we keep GTjr and would like to see him progress to the point of we have to keep him.

Going be minutes and opportunity for Trent this year to see what his contract will be. Remember Hood also can get minutes at the 2. This also goes with Zach too.

It's crazy that just last year, lots of people questioned whether Trent had a future on the team. Now we're worried about losing him to $15-20M/yr offers. At the same time, Simons went from our next future back court development star to trade bait in the minds of many.

People should be emotionally prepared to let Trent walk next year, and re-flash their thinking to Simons inheriting his pecking order minutes. Olshey is more attached to, and almost certainly less financially invested in, Ant.

At least Anunoby's extension looks normal. A solid starter for a top East team. Trent should never reach that amount if we are on our right mind although Kennard's one looks bad since that guy cannot defend and maybe he has some knee issues as well. But the Clippers seem a bit in panic mode this season considering that now they have commited 128M/4 years for Kennard and Marcus Morris. Crazy that 4 contracts (George and Kawhi the other two) will take them over the cap already.

Morris Kennard Bertans Plumlee Grant Fulton Adams Beasly Harris.

All got massive contracts and I'm not sure any of them are a starter.

Agree CJ contract is starting to look much better!

" This is where Klutch Sports comes into play. After bidding against himself to overpay multiple players (i.e. McCollum, Meyers Leonard, and Maurice Harkless), Olshey seems to have come to his senses in the last couple years. Most notably, Jusuf Nurkic signed a team-friendly deal in 2018.

Not so coincidentally, Nurkic has since signed with Klutch. Presumably based on their reputation for being extremely aggressive and player friendly in negotiations. The tl;dr here is that Rich Paul and co. aren’t going to accept a low-ball offer on Trent’s behalf. This, combined with Trent’s pending RFA status during a slight salary cap depression, suggests that it will be difficult for the two sides to find a middle ground during the offseason
."

I don't think we know if Olshey has come to his senses about bidding against himself. The Nurkic contract came at a time when only 3 teams had cap-space above the MLE and all three teams had good centers. All we really know it that when Olshey has big cap-space or one of his favorite players is due an extension he makes bad decisions. When the market is slanted heavily in his favor, and there's limited league-wide cap-space, he makes good decisions.

Nurkic just had terrible timing for his free agency.

if Trent has confidence in his own abilities and his potential for improvement, he won't be very enthusiastic about signing a contract of less than 13M/year when he'd be eligible for a max of 30M/year 7 months from now; especially considering he'd be signing as CJ's backup

Olshey is going to be tested over the next couple of seasons. Not only is Trent eligible for an extension, Zach is too

Portland free agents next July:

Zach
Trent
Kanter
Giles

free agents July 2022:

Nurkic (isn't he eligible for an extension right now too?)
Covington
Hood
Jones
Simons

lots of loose ends. And in 2022/23 Dame + CJ will combine for 80.6M in salary which could be over 70% of the salary cap. The following year they get 86.5M

Zach
Trent
Kanter
Giles
Let them go to free agency...........There is always someone else.

We have to trade CJ next summer, Neil has to no matter whether he wants to or not

Good possibility that Trent will leave next year if they offer him a bunch I hope he stays. I think Zach will get new contract and stays here. But there some teams that has talk to Portland about Zach so kind watch for that next off season. I also Kanter will sign back with us and Jones will 50/50. Giles 50/50 for him to stay.

He was born and raised in Philly. A lot of guys come here and love it. Majority of these decisions are driven by money and role. Don’t recall many players leaving a city due to weather.

Lillard: “I think people look at certain cities and they go to places [on the road] like New York and Toronto and go, ‘I like this place’ so for any free agent, that’s the first thing they are going to think of. But when they come to Portland it’s raining, it’s cloudy, it’s cold and that’s the first thing they see.

Yeah it’s not San Diego. But for Jones JR, our weather is mild compared to Philly. If he leaves because of the weather so be it. Just not sure how many times that’s ever happened.

It’s always been interesting - weather and sports. At the college level people always confused, how can San Diego State suck at football or why isn’t UC Santa Barbara better?! Athletes don’t care as much as everyone else. Kids go to Eugene over Honolulu or San Diego or Arizona and LA. As for pros, they all know that from May to Sept they go “home”. During the season they are gone half the time. Not sure they really factor in weather that much.

He should start at the three when CJ gets back. As for longer term, we should use CJ to acquire a four and let Trent take over, but we all know the only way that’s happening is if Olshey gets fired.

As far as basketball is concerned? The game is played indoors.

I never understood that argument. If anything, Portland's summers should attract more players. It's better than other cities.

It's just reputation. It's why when players actually end up here they realize it's no different than other cities, for the most part. Of course, que the "there's 3 black people here!" routine.

Evidently Lillard thinks its its a factor for attracting FA stars because thats what he hears.

who do you have in mind to target?

Oshley could be aggressive and try CJ, Ant, Hood, and maybe Nas, for a close-to- superstar piece and a fucking real backup point guard. Then hope to hell Trent will sign.

Plenty of teams would love to have CJ and or Ant.

OR

Deal Trent now instead of CJ. Having both makes no sense to me. Trent will bolt if he sees himself as a bench player. Then Portland gets shit.

I assure you that this is what Neil will do. NOTHING. Trent is as good as gone IMHO.
